Just released the list of changes to the Hundredrabbits projects for November!

T'was a busy, busy month!

100r.co/site/home.html#nov2023

Two wiktopher characters standing on a dune with their backs turned to us, drawn by hand in pencil.
R E K

Suraj G. recently asked to use the little wonky font(of my handwriting) I did for my comic Hakum, and sent me a photo of what its being used for.

This is a framed e-ink display with a battery operated Raspberry Pi mounted to the back. Everyday it refreshes with a new random quote.

So cool, haha~!

@rek with that red bezel I expected a pair of faux etch-a-sketch white knobs on the bottom

:moomin_flower2: Wiktopher is finally finished :moomin_flower2:

I loved spending time in that world, I hope you will too!

Btw, in the next month or so I will likely be pushing a lot of changes to this book(so keep an eye on Itch.io if you want the latest changes, the versions are numbered).

Me and Dev have had eyes on the manuscript for a long time, and at this point there are mistakes we just don't see.

If you find any mistakes, kindly let us know :>. We're not professionals, we just like worldbuilding, and editing/typesetting books.

@rek the cover is something else! Congratulations! :moomin_yay:

rostiger

@rek Amazing! Massive congratulations on wrapping up such a monumental project! Looking forward to the printed edition!

R E K

Wahoo~ new saloon cushioooons! They're SO plump...!
Next, gatta measure the fabric needed to make the back rests so they match.

a sailboat saloon with new cushions that dont match up with some of the existing upholstery but that look pretty and comfy AF.

I don't know why but I never realized what the fundamental difference was between eatable and edible.

I just realized I've been using the word eatable in all situations.

eatable: able to be eaten, with acceptable taste
edible: safe to eat, regardless of taste

wrack

@rek To be frank, 'eatable' is a modern word. 'Edible' has always covered, 'able to be eaten' and 'acceptable taste', with context making its particular meaning clear.

DELETED

@rek i may have to update my
mental dictionary
eatable: able to be eaten regardless of taste or safety
edible: a chocolate or gummy infused with distilled thc

Thomasorus

@rek I thought edible was just for weed related food lol

Just finished changing the keyboard on an 11in Macbook Air 2013. Went well!
It is SO nice to have the tab, caps lock, R, 4 and } keys working again!

R E K

In the end the 'r' key kept popping out of its slot >_<... was driving me nuts.

rostiger

@rek Hah, wow, what a satisfying relief that must be.
I'm impressed that you dared to take it apart AND were able to reassemble it. 💪

R E K

The cover of Thousand Rooms in Solresol. "Solfasol Remisolla" is the name of the book in Solresol.

Devine did the translation(with help from ppl from the Solresol community), and I'm putting the notes on a staff :>...

poetaster

@rek that is really, really neat. I think I'll try to translate some haiku to Solresol!

R E K

HOT damn :moomin_sparkles:

What am I doing even.

a paragraph from thousand rooms translated into Solresol and looking very alien.

Made some very mild kimchi :P!

Cabbage is super expensive at the grocery store nowadays, but bought 2 large ones on special this week. Really pays to look at flyers for times when produce is cheaper :>!

I keep the expired flyers to light the wood stove…

poetaster

@rek cabbage expensive!!?! Jeez. In BC? Very affordable here in kraut world. I use a large ceramic urn (about 5 liters) for kimchi/ sauerkraut. Birds eye chili kraut!

eiven

@rek I've been making kimchi a lot these days too... and lactofermented hot sauce! we had a lot of cabbage from our csa and had like 5lbs of hot peppers dropped off to us from a friend. haven't tried buying either yet, but def believe you. prices are unbelievable, and they've started locking up the dumpsters. -_-

R E K

When I draw comics I tend to write text by hand, but my hand letter work is a bit inconsistent, so I decided to make a font out of my handwriting!

First time making a font. Was inspired by Lizbeth(who's also working on a lovely font rn).

A page of the Hakum comic with the new font I just made, which is handwritten and a bit wonky.

@rek I really like the lower case d. (Also hello after some time)

rostiger

@rek Oh, that's a pretty solid looking font - well done!

ThaCuber

@rek maybe a weird question, but will you make it available anywhere?

R E K

Added GPS coordinates to every day in the log :).

We had the coordinates for the 52-day sail from Japan to Canada in a text file on 100r.co. Publishing them in the book is a good way to preserve that data.

@rek When you wrote the log did you write it by had at first or straight into a computer?

Looking to replace our boat's saloon cushions. Been adding up the costs. DIY'ing it is gonna be costly, but can't imagine what it'd cost if I asked an upholsterer.

I know where to get the foam, still unsure on fabric.

Looking at fabric samples online reminds me of that bit in Lost in Translation when his wife sends him different carpet samples by mail to choose from, and that they ALL LOOK THE SAME.

Fabric names are freakin hilarious. 'Teddy bear truffle', 'lavish storm'....'ottawa sand'.

@rek 😆 Because when I think of sand, the first place that comes to mind is Ottawa

Max Cahill

@rek going in person to some kind of fabric/sewing/etc shop is something i'd recommend highly if you can. there are discount bulk/factory reject fabric places that are generally the best deal in that space if you can find one local; online definitely feels like a crapshoot in terms of like

> surprise! you hate some aspect of the feel or appearance of the fabric you just bought 20 meters of

but i appreciate that may be difficult from pino~

Robin

@rek This summer my partner was rolling her eyes at the ridiculous shades of paint (the top-one) and in response, spoofed-up the lower.

R E K

Dev & I spent an hour going through strings of christmas lights trying to find out why half of the string wasn't lit. Checked fuse, was good.

Evidently, corrosion was the culprit. Had to sacrifice a string and took 6 bulbs from it so the other one would work. The metal connections in the dead ones had all turned to dust. Ah, boatssss, salt everywhereeee 😑 ...

Now we're down one string of lights, but at least Pino is well-lit and looking awesome ^____^

DELETED

@rek corrosion kills my electronics just living in the Sydney climate. I’ve been looking into these special bags and containers that are meant to control humidity for longer term storage. though if you can get your hands on satchels of silica gel putting a few of them in a zip lock bag with your electronics may do the trick

Kototama

@rek it's weird that salt and water preserves food but destroy all the rest :-)

Devine Lu Linvega

@rek All the plastic and electronics garbage from 2 sets of broken lights after only one year..

I put all of the Ilken(Solresol) poems/songs featured in the story on a staff. Here's an example:

fadomisi doremi sisolfasol, to mean, "the desert is loud".

Desert: fadomisi
To be: doremi
Loud, noisy: sisolfasol

Replacing a jacket zipper for the first time. The teeth of the zipper were so worn at one end they couldn't bite, and the coat zipper would keep opening from the bottom.

Did one side, now doing the other. The other side is a bit tougher cause there's more layers. The stitching it strong but isn't super clean cause I have to do it by hand(too many layers for the sewing machine).

a hand holding an unstitched bit of zipper to a winter jacket, the winter jacket is split and the inside filling is visible.

R E K

I learned a few things while trying to do this fix.

For instance, there are many ways that zippers fail. It's not always necessary to replace the whole thing. Sometimes a new zipper slider or bottom stop is enough to fix a coat opening from the bottom.

It's possible to buy parts separately or to get a kit.

I had to replace the whole thing because the teeth were too badly worn.

Hardest bit was getting the old stitches out to get the zipper off (was very well put together).

Made drawn maps of our summer sailing in the Salish Sea. Previously, we had a messy live map with so much overlap that it was unreadable.

Corrected 2021. I didn't keep a logbook that year (bad Rek!) and it seems like I forgot we'd been to SaltSpring(where we met Bosun Bird for the first time) and to Vancouver :>.

Started uploading some pages. Haven't had a ton of time to work on these, but I'm happy with it so far :D (3/17 pages).

Shading with pencils, off the computer, is a ton of fun, but it'd be a bit easier if the frames werent so small (im working on 8.5/11in, paper, with the page taking up the entire height/width). May do fewer frames per sheet next time so I can get in more detail.

kokorobot.ca/site/night_terror

A comic page.
1st frame: "STOP!" guard flashing light at hakazi in the dark.
2nd: "Youre in big trouble kid. Pulling survey stakes is an actionable offense." the guard says, hakazi replies "the hell is a sir-vay steak?"
3rd: "Dont bother trying to deny it, i know it was you. hands up." guard says. "But im a rabbit!" Hakazi says, his two hands holding up 2 fingers behind his head, smiling mischieviously.
4th: "On your knees, now." the guard is not amused.
the same comic page, showing the work done by hand by pencil
R E K

Finished and uploaded page 4/17 :>

Some sneaky action.

Sequence up to date: kokorobot.ca/site/night_terror

comic page featuring Dae sneaking up behind an armed guard to try and save his buddy, while the guard is speaking to his captive at gun point.
1st frame: guard says, "im coming to you now" to hakazi who is on his knees, hands behind his head in the glow of the guard's flashlight.
Hakazi says, "No no, id rather you stay there."
Guard says, "funny. You're about to learn a very hard lesson..."
Meanwhile, Dae is slipping closer and closer...

Looks like the otters loved us not being home.

Two of them were hopping on and off of the deck all night. Both of us couldn't sleep so we got up every hour to chase them off (they're rly very persistent).

It's possible they've made a toilet/bed of our gennaker bag which we store on deck under the dinghy. Haven't gone out to check yet(not sure i want to), but I can see it in part from the forward hatch, and it looks like they've flattened out the bag, shaped it for comfort :ohnobubble:

If you find yourself in that situation again and don't want to get up all night long, consider leaving a radio on on the deck.
Choose the station to adjust the genre/human voice ratio to the desired level of annoyance. ;)

T'was a long time coming, but I spent time optimizing my website. It has fewer lines of CSS. I spent a lot of time cleaning up the code overall.

Feels good :cooldog:
