Replacing a jacket zipper for the first time. The teeth of the zipper were so worn at one end they couldn't bite, and the coat zipper would keep opening from the bottom.

Did one side, now doing the other. The other side is a bit tougher cause there's more layers. The stitching it strong but isn't super clean cause I have to do it by hand(too many layers for the sewing machine).

I learned a few things while trying to do this fix.

For instance, there are many ways that zippers fail. It's not always necessary to replace the whole thing. Sometimes a new zipper slider or bottom stop is enough to fix a coat opening from the bottom.

It's possible to buy parts separately or to get a kit.

I had to replace the whole thing because the teeth were too badly worn.

Hardest bit was getting the old stitches out to get the zipper off (was very well put together).

@rek

How do you replace a #zipper slider? (top part for pulling it with the fingers broke)

Do you happen to have a link?

@rek

Thanks a lot.
I'll check out a store for a repair kit. The slider (pull) is broken.

@rek woah this is really cool, thanks for sharing rek! zippers failing are one of those repairs that spook me a bit for some reason

@cblgh it spooked me too, ive been wearing that jacket w/o a working zipper for 2 yrs now XD... this year i just got fed up. Jacket has patches of velcro on the outside so it still closes *a bit*...

Im usually always super intimidated until i start looking into it. Then Im fine when i have all the steps outlined, and that I understand them.

I also asked questions to a worker at a Fabric Repair & Restoration shop in town (where i got the zipper), he was rly nice about it ^^!

@rek @cblgh Hopefully we can have more repair shops so that we don't have to learn every possible skills 😅

@narF @cblgh Why not learn things as you need them? You can only benefit from that.

I could have taken my jacket to that shop for a repair, but it costs a LOT more than if i do it. And then I know how it works, which is kind of cool :).

@rek Yeah of course. I did learn and now do small clothing repairs myself.

But its ok to not have the desire or energy to do everything ourselves. And trade small work in exchange of other small work (ex: you fix my jacket and I'll fix your computer next time you need)

R E K

@narF Of course, ppl dont have to learn if they dont want to, but offloading sewing work is kind of a luxury (by that i just mean paying money at a shop for a repair, not exchanges).

Having ppl you can rely on for small work exchanges though is real nice~

Forgot to share the finished install of the new zipper! It's so nice to have a jacket that closes again ^________^
