no one will remember:

- how much money you made
- how many hours you worked
- how "busy you were"

they will remember:

- nothing
- the internet has destroyed my short term memory
- why did i unlock my phone again? i wanted to do something

My employer added a clause in my last NDA stating that I was prohibited from saying anything "disparaging" about the company. Now when anyone asks about job postings I tell them, "I'm contractually obligated not to say anything disparaging about them." None have ever applied.

@fesshole Fun fact about any contract: They're not binding if you move to a country with no extradition treaty. ;)

Miguel Filipe

@fesshole you do you, but at that point, if this an ethical matter you should quit

kccqzy

@fesshole @gsuberland Usually these clauses (or the entire NDA) come with an expiration date. A new hire had such a clause and he told us when that NDA would expire. We then scheduled a meeting one day after the expiration to talk about it.

"Air purifiers of various sizes and types were placed in two of the city's daycare centres during cold and flu seasons.

The initial results from the first year of research are promising, according to researcher Enni Sanmark, from HUS Helsinki University Hospital.

"Children were clearly less sick in daycare centres where air purification devices were used โ€” down by around 30 percent," Sanmark explained."

Governor Walz: "Never underestimate a public school teacher."

"We made sure that every kid in our state gets breakfast and lunch every day. So while other states were banning books from their schools, we were banishing hunger from ours. We also protected reproductive freedom because in Minnesota, we respect our neighbors and the personal choices they make. Even if we wouldn't make those same choices for ourselves, we've got a golden rule: Mind your own damn business."

It really says something about the USA that a miniature kei car is "too dangerous" for public roads, but a lifted 8,000-lb pickup is just fine.

@davidzipper Thereโ€™s no way this is about safety, otherwise there are so many other street-legal vehicles that would also be banned.

Kudra :maybe_verified:

@davidzipper as a #EV #keicar owner in #Australia, I can confirm it's happening here too. Even brand new kei cars that previously were able to be grey imported have become unregisterable due to the fact that Japan now harmonises with #EU manufacturing regulations, but there's a few differences with #AU regs, and on that basis they've now decided, FU kei cars. Which is fucking ridiculous. I've got one that is over 10 years old and it's still importable as the changes came in to Japanese manufacturing since then, but one I've been considering to get next that is an as-yet unreleased 2024 new car, may not be possible to get regoed here (still unsure at this point) just total bollocks.

@davidzipper Arnold always came to mind when it comes to BIG vehicles. I used to think that maybe Americans find it macho because Arnold.

@thomasbeagle More context here.
newsroom.co.nz/2024/08/21/abus

I've heard from survivors and from their advocates directly on this issue. They've been furious at recovery denied for so long by blocking access to records.

Issues date back to uplifts by the state and similar events and people trying so hard to rediscover family or their own memories. Government denial of people's own histories is inexcusable.

prediction
in 10 or 15 years, current AI will be obsolete and everyone on tusker will be mourning the death of LLMs and there will be passionate calls to keep the traditions alive calls for open source LLM etc etc

Cy
I don't worry about art theft as much as about instances that use AI to conceal agitprop bot posting. AI art is... "neat," it won't ever surpass the quality of its sources, and really it's just a fancy copy and paste that anyone could do (less well) clipping out the art themselves. But AI empowered bots can overwhelm us in utter bullshit, turning our community into just another propaganda engine for venture capitalists.

Either way, keeping AI out of the Fediverse is advisable.

The trend of building surveillance into all new smart TVs is "incredibly invasive and little understood,โ€ EFFโ€™s Jacob Hoffman-Andrews told @arstechnica. "Nobody wants a snooping and snitching television, but lately that's all you can buy.โ€ arstechnica.com/gadgets/2024/0

@eff @arstechnica Setting aside the surveillance, smart TVs have become more cumbersome to use. Theyโ€™re slow, constantly ask for updates (what am I agreeing to before I watch Jeopardy?), and mine is just buggy. User experience with the appliance itself is just bad. But on plus side, I watch TV less and spend more time on hobbies.

Marlinspike

@eff @arstechnica As others have said, buy a regular smart TV and just don't allow it on the internet. If it requires a connection in order to function (such as Google) don't buy that model of television. Lastly, I've had issues with mixing PiHole and TV boxes like Google TV and Apple. The PiHole seems to prevent them from remembering which episode I'm on. Anyone else experience this?

CelloMom On Cars

@eff @arstechnica

This article is about TVs, but now I'm wondering if screen projectors for "home cinema" also spy on you?
