I have just read this sentence: "Usually I pick up Starbucks for my morning coffee because it's closer than my local coffee shop and I don't have to put on real clothes to drive through it..."

And I'm just. Staring into the distance in European. You DRIVE to get COFFEE before putting on your CLOTHES? You can't be bothered to put on clothes because you haven't had your morning coffee but you will DRIVE to a fully another location that isn't YOUR FUCKING HOUSE to get it??? You will operate. The machinery! On the roads, that you share with other people! To drive to a location?? When you could just make it at home??

I try not to judge but, dear reader, I am fucking judging 😶

@sinituulia
This reminds me of the three fast food drive-throughs in the small town next to me, all of them right next to mostly empty parking lots. What's the idea?

BeeDazzledCymru

@sinituulia I have known a couple of couples, although not well, who had no kitchen in normal sized houses that they owned. One couple moved from the city to the countryside near the town of Aberaron, but not in it and promptly ripped out the kitchen. They had a primary school age child. Went out for every meal and every drink. The choice is not great in that tiny town.

@sinituulia How… how is a Starbucks they need to *drive* to “closer” than their “local” coffee shop?? Or is it just about hiding in the car because they’re not actually dressed, and they’re *driving* to a coffee shop they could get to on foot?? Also, yes to everything you say about just making coffee at home! I can understand picking it up on one’s way to work, but the no real clothes thing makes me think the person is headed back home afterwards, so buying coffee from a coffee shop in those circumstances is just absurd.

Banks made record profits last financial year, as did mining companies and Coles and Woolworths keep making more profits. Australia exports most of the food we grow here, but price gouging is ripping off our farmers. The economy is rigged. It’s not some natural occurrence that has redirected profits away from working people. People are angry, and they’re right to be. This is a “heist facilitated by Labor and Liberals”.

The skin of your laundry pods dissolve in the washing machine, right?

They dissolve into microplastic.
And wastewater treatment systems have no way to filter that out so the microplastics go straight into streams and the ocean.

Just pour your laundry soap out of a box or bottle.

@CelloMomOnCars I feel bad now. I actually thought they were good for the environment, that they disolved in some biodegradable way like those bin-bags.

Jimmy Havok

@CelloMomOnCars Box, please. Powder is much more efficient to ship and frugal as well.

Carolyn

@CelloMomOnCars I've never understood the point of those things. People are that lazy that they can't measure out detergent?

I have 4,000 Median Daily temperatures recorded at my house over the past 18 years.

The past 19 days straight have had a daily median higher than the median for that date over that period. The longest previous run was 18 days back in Aug/Sept 2013.

I had only previously recorded 3 temps >25 degrees up to August 26th (2012, 2015, 2021) – we had 2 this past week.

6 days this month had the highest max daily temp I've recorded for that date.

I was today years old when I learned that linoleum is an all-natural product not derived from fossil fuels and plastics. Wild - I had always mentally associated it with really tacky looking plasticky floors in houses from the 80s (and of course the NOFX song). Nope. Linseed oil (something I'm learning is in so many great things) and pine resin. And apparently it can actually be made to look quite good and artsy, just, almost nobody seemed to have done so in any house I ever set foot in with it.

@klardotsh Pine resin? Usually it uses sawdust/cork dust as the material the linseed oil coagulates around?

Jay Stephens

@klardotsh I have seen hundreds of shit linoleum floors, and a couple of great ones. I never connected the "lin" with linseed and the "ol" with oil, until your post tho. Duh.

KJRS-10 (330 ppm)

@klardotsh Marmoleum is a variety of linoleum and we did our entire place in blue 💙

I've got a good feeling about this bank of mysterious fog moving against the wind to blanket our isolated small town.

@sundogplanets
All the dystopian post-apocalytic movies & series we see these days, can we get one quality series set in a world 100 years into the future where simply all the medium-bad predictions turn out to be true?

twelve years ago, a painter by the name of anders ramsell painted 12,597 aquarelle paintings of blade runner, shot by shot, of the entire film edited down to ~35 minutes. it took two years of painstaking work, all done in his spare time after work each night.

the video circled around the web for a few years, and quietly disappeared from every single site it was hosted at.

a few months ago i spent a few hours digging for it, and finally found a copy of the original file.

i'm not sure how long it will last over at IA, so enjoy it while you can. it is a true achievement. 🙏

@vga256 There are scenes from other films interspersed in this, including some that people have identified from Passion of the Christ. It's far more than simple rotoscoping.

In France car parks with space for 80 cars or more are now required by law to be covered with solar panels.

- Parks between 80-400 spaces have 5 years to comply
- Parks with spaces of 400+ have 3 years to comply

This should be required everywhere!

@calmeilles Frankreich macht uns es hier vor. Drei bzw. fünf Jahre sind ambitioniert. Frankreich will weg von der unsicheren und extrem teueren Atomenergie.

Mike Barbre

@calmeilles Implementing these structures and climate initiatives is completely doable in the U.S.
We can save this world (and ourselves!). Just get conservative psychos and obstructionists out of the fking way.

Z̡̭͆́E̲͞n͇̘̔̕ ̈R̬̦̃͘I̛͖o̡̟͑͒t

@calmeilles massive upgrade considering that now everybody can park in the shade let alone all the energy you can harvest with this.

I have been working on this for the past two months, after growing increasingly concerned about the influence this industry is trying to exert. Did you know crypto companies have spent more this cycle than the oil or pharmaceutical industries, despite being a small fraction of the size?

@1HommeAzerty Why is it bugging me so much that I can't figure out the "2 passive incomes" bit? It's just a joke. It doesn't matter, and if you have to have a joke explained, it automatically becomes not funny anyway. Let it go, stupid brain!
