@MikeDunnAuthor

Is it an alternative...? Was it ever? I'm not so certain.

Abyssal Rook

@MikeDunnAuthor Have 'em play Night in the Woods and do the sidequest where they explain that that's literally exactly what they did to a mine owner and the "union" founders of the time kept his teeth as trophies signifying their unity.

"The results show [iota-carageenan] has potent antiviral activity compared to placebo and a favorable safety profile. Although further research is needed, the concept of a physical barrier capable of reducing viral penetration of epithelial cells in the nasal mucosa is appealing, and could lead to alternative approaches, with positive impact on global health."

Layered precautions are like mods for your immune system. I installed one called Betadine Cold Defence Nasal Spray

@currentbias the study about xylitol or I-C Nasal sprays with nurses worked to reduce infection because it was in combination with masks. Nasal sprays are just an additional layer, the main defense is always masking and air cleaning.

Traiken

@currentbias Anecdotally, I’ve been using Betadine for months and my allergies are nowhere near as bad as they usually get. That feels like, idunno, something.

@currentbias I personally use all the mods available that are least annoying:

* #Novavax when possible
* #mrna when it hasn't been
* #fluvaccination yearly
* #gargling twice daily both water & mouthwash (several types on rotation)
* #iotacarrageenan when I feel at risk

Masked when required, especially before vaccination (and used to mask on flights well before covid to reduce illness, used to get some very strange looks!) Would mask again for a new pandemic with no complaints, but don't currently.

I am still a #novid, as is my almost 3yo daughter who has never been vaccinated as she's not allowed to until age 5 in my country. She gets every flu vax though!

Good news Friday: In the UK wind and solar are on track to generate more electricity than gas in 2024.

Note: The last coal plant will go offline by 30 September 2024.

Source for data is @emberclimate

@janrosenow @emberclimate Figures from the National Grid at nationalgrid.com/stories/energ suggest this already happened in 2023: wind (29.4%) and solar (4.9%) total 34.3%, compared with 32% for gas.

The data feeds I use for grid.iamkate.com/ also showed wind and solar overtaking gas last year.

I know Michael through the community he and his co founders set up alongside their podcast. He's a great guy.

If you're having a hard time around father's day, as a man without children, for any reason, there are resources available and people who get it.

lachlan but spooky

@keira_reckons I feel so blessed that a few years of infertility crap, IVF eventually worked for us. But that pain of those events just sucks and doesn't go away. Even if it eventually works, you still suffer from a constant fear and trauma from the process.
It's a bit part of why we've been so light on the amount we talk about our 1yo on social media and in public - because it sucks to be reminded on the other side of it.

I currently hold a Novo Nordisk foundation grant (charitable research foundation funded by maker of #Wegovy + #ozempic), working on ice sheet models.

I occasionally describe the drug as a modern day philosopher's stone. It turns fat into gold + helps a lot of other conditions

mastodon.social/@waldoj/113052
@waldoj - People taking Wegovy are 33% less likely to die of Covid ... based on 17,604 study participants over three years. Semaglutide is a *very* interesting drug. nytimes.com/2024/08/30/health/

Glad that the lost hiker in Colorado was rescued. But stories like this sure bother me. After all, the guy had a cell phone with GPS. If he had the most basic map on his phone showing the trail/route and his location then this near disaster would not have happened.

I developed GeoJPG so anyone can have their own high quality custom maps that work offline. No ads, no signup, no tracking, no cost. *Not* available in any app store. Tutorials and installation instructions on the website geojpg.com

Your product GeoJPG sounds very useful. Thanks. As a hiker in Colorado for the past 40 years and a hike leader for the Colorado Mountain Club, what shocked me most about the lost hiker in the Mt Shavano area was the sheriff missing a crucial teaching moment about outdoor safety esp after all those resources were deployed in the search. Most basic rule of safety on a group hike of keeping everyone together and no one person wandering off by themselves.

If you're going sufficiently out into the boonies wouldn't printing out a paper map be a good idea? It's not like there's a host of things that can go wrong with electronic maps.

If you have #adhd and you like cute things, here's a hack that's been super successful for me: get something super cute or super fun to hold a thing you constantly misplace. Something that makes you want to interact with it because you love it so much.

I got this owl glasses holder a few years back and I literally have not misplaced them since, because I just love putting them on the owl at night. Revolutionary.
