Good news Friday: In the UK wind and solar are on track to generate more electricity than gas in 2024.

Note: The last coal plant will go offline by 30 September 2024.

@emberclimate @janrosenow Annual stats of an intermittent supply are at best misleading. Ontario has produced 8TWh of wind power so far this year. However to navigate the summer slump at 1GW 24/7 would now require $21.5 billion of $50kWh storage.

@icanbob @emberclimate @janrosenow Ontario's revenue in the 2023-2024 period was $204bln, so 1% of state revenue could build that out over the course of a decade, and that's if the province refused national funding and could be done much cheaper by just offering it out for tender for power companies to make profit off of.

@janrosenow @emberclimate Figures from the National Grid at nationalgrid.com/stories/energ suggest this already happened in 2023: wind (29.4%) and solar (4.9%) total 34.3%, compared with 32% for gas.

The data feeds I use for grid.iamkate.com/ also showed wind and solar overtaking gas last year.

I updated my graph in advance.
Operational coal fired power stations from beginning to end.
