@billbennett There are not enough New Zealand ✂️ trains and railways ✂️. Please do something about this. (Fixed it for you) @billbennett My grandparents lived opposite the railway station at Wingatui from about 1954 to 1990. We spent many happy days playing at the station. Nowadays it's closed as an actual railway station. Trains still pass through of course, like this one back in 2015. New solar PV installations in 2024, nearly 600GW, more than the total existing capacity of nuclear, about 400 GW https://www.pv-magazine.com/2024/08/30/solar-module-installations-could-hit-592-gw-in-2024/?utm_source=Global+%7C+Newsletter&utm_campaign=a05b7195f1-dailynl_gl&utm_medium=email&utm_term=0_6916ce32b6-a05b7195f1-160632492 #repost More solar installed every six weeks than all nuclear currently under construction. I've wanted to make this visual #dadjoke for some time, today I found the required raw material in a local opshop On the road on the road on the road

I wrote about how I think we should ban the use of facial recognition technology to do remote surveillance: https://nzccl.org.nz/facing-up-to-reality-new-zealand-is-failing-on-controlling-facial-recognition-technology/ Thanks. That’s a good article. Those remote recognition things also bring up the already existing problem of right of access to and correction of information. In the past someone would have to look me in the eye and tell me I’m a bad person but now the computer does it automatically and in the most shoddy way possible, and even after trying to get it fixed (because it’s their mistake) I still have problems. Automatic problems. No human intervention required. I am pleased to announce that my new podcast on paleoclimate, Earth Science and global change, the Raised Beaches Podcast, will launch tomorrow (Friday 6th) at 11 AM Japan time (2 AM UTC)! There are a few books from authors that have turned out to be deeply problematic that I haven't included, which is sad, but I think appropriate, even though some say you can separate the art from the artist.... 20 books that have had an impact on who you are. One book a day for 20 days. No explanations, no reviews, just book covers (don't forget the alt text). 20/20 At the end of the 19th century, economists were arguing that poverty was caused by there being too many people for the surrounding land to support. Evidence for this was that one saw almost no poverty in frontier towns, and plenty of poverty in large cities. Limited resources could only be stretched so thin. Henry George, in his book "Progress and Poverty", called BS on this. Due to specialisation of labour, he argued each additional person meant there'd be *more* to go around, not less. 🧵 In a frontier town, yes, everyone can cut their own wood, mend their own shoes, and gather their own food. But in a new frontier town, everyone *has* to do these things, because there is no woodcutter, no cobbler, no grocer. George argued that frontier towns didn't have abject poverty because they *also* didn't support grandiose wealth. The conditions of the frontier were leveling. 🧵 We've all heard 'You can't beat Wellington on a good day', but how do you know when it's a good day? I've built a website that checks the weather in Wellington, compares it against a predefined set of rules to determine if it is a Good Day or not (according to me). I was thinking of releasing it on a URL like 'canyoubeatwellington.co.nz' Is it worth the 30 bucks or so for the domain and hosting, or do I just keep it as a fun little private project?

@Pat Great concept! It reminds me of this one about snow in Ōtepoti, which is obviously less complex and often just says yes or no 😆 https://isitsnowingindunedin.co.nz/

@SmudgeTheInsultCat But where did the dinosaurs emerge? @SmudgeTheInsultCat what is with snails and fishes? These were certainly also before. @collectifission It would be interesting to know how many calls Eugen has had from the media on this matter. @collectifission @cstross So, I agree with you about the missed opportunity, but I feel the "where's Eugen" dig is very unfair. Mastodon gGmbH is like 4 people and they're all coders, not marketing. The fediverse is an intentionally decentralized collective, not organized like a startup running user-acquisition campaigns. Nobody executed the highly skilled labor you (and I) wish would have happened because there is literally no one being paid to do that, because Mastodon is not a company,. Today, the Klamath River is flowing freely for the first time in more than 100 years. The dams have been removed. The ecosystems are being nurtured. And sovereignty has been restored to the Shasta Indian Nation over another 2800 acres. Good things are happening. Great things are possible. https://lostcoastoutpost.com/2024/aug/28/today-klamath-river-flowing-free-first-time-more-c/ @GetCarter Hello from Redcliffe, Qld, Australia That's "unusual" Btw love your photo |
