@billbennett I love commuting between Palmy and Welly on the Capital Connection. 2hrs each way. Cafe car means I have coffee w/ toast for breaky & a Pinot Gris to wind down at end of day. Comfy seats, table, & power. So much better than the 1hr each way cramped bus ride from Karori to CBD I used to suffer before moving. @venzann Brilliant. I love stories like this. Do you ever manage to snooze on the journey or do you get work done? @billbennett I either read or just relax. Evening trips during spring/autumn are fantastic because of the sunset while passing Kapiti. I never sleep while travelling. Not even long haul international flights. @venzann @billbennett my eldest will at Massey University's campus in Palmy next year. She's planning on using the train for trips home. @puck @billbennett It's a fantastic service. I just wish they also did a bidirectional run during the middle of the day (planned upgrade coming sometime "soon") for when you only need half a day. @puck yeah, there are some significant limitations on the schedule. But it's better than a bus. @billbennett Trying to create some memories of what we have or could have had before Luxo & Co destroy it all? @billbennett There are not enough New Zealand ✂️ trains and railways ✂️. Please do something about this. (Fixed it for you) @billbennett My grandparents lived opposite the railway station at Wingatui from about 1954 to 1990. We spent many happy days playing at the station. Nowadays it's closed as an actual railway station. Trains still pass through of course, like this one back in 2015. @paulhellyer Great photo too. Are there any non-tourist passenger trips in that part of the country these days? @billbennett Sadly, I have no idea these days. Every time I pay a visit to Wingatui - purely for nostalgic reasons - it seems quieter than last time. Back in the day, my grandmother could set her watch by the trains as they came through. She knew every single one. I can recall as a small boy catching a steam train from Dunedin to Wingatui to stay with them - unaccompanied! I can still recall the sound of the train's whistle. Scared me half to death, to be honest it was so loud! |
