@billbennett My grandparents lived opposite the railway station at Wingatui from about 1954 to 1990. We spent many happy days playing at the station. Nowadays it's closed as an actual railway station. Trains still pass through of course, like this one back in 2015.

@paulhellyer Great photo too. Are there any non-tourist passenger trips in that part of the country these days?

@billbennett Sadly, I have no idea these days. Every time I pay a visit to Wingatui - purely for nostalgic reasons - it seems quieter than last time. Back in the day, my grandmother could set her watch by the trains as they came through. She knew every single one. I can recall as a small boy catching a steam train from Dunedin to Wingatui to stay with them - unaccompanied! I can still recall the sound of the train's whistle. Scared me half to death, to be honest it was so loud!
