Interesting observation about social media “fun”:

Some people think #Bluesky is “fun”. However, I find it anxiety-inducing and stressful. I’m not the only one who thinks so. A few autistic people say the same thing.

#Calckey seems “fun” to me because I can make it be what I need it to be. For example, it’s nice that I can create antennas devoted to my special interests.

the calckey community has a very non-cynical way to go and - i think this is remarkable! - takes pleasure in experimenting and making mistakes

@atomicpoet @fediversenews I don’t know about #Bluesky itself, but I know the users of it who invade my threads and go OT are anxiety and stress inducing

Calckey is fun and I really love it after only 3 weeks time. Also, the ppl don´t seem so serious compared to Mastodon (my observation and maybe not fair)

I hope Calckey will grow and more ppl will join it!

The best way to explain #Calckey is to imagine what would happen if (pre-Elon) #Twitter fell in love with #WordPress and they had a baby.

That baby would be Calckey.

Twitter + WordPress = Calckey

Let me explain... 🧵

Chris Trottier

So like #Twitter, #Calckey has a timeline feed. Multiple timeline feeds, in fact:

1. Home
2. Local
3. Social
4. Recommended
5. Global

It's got more feeds than Twitter. And you can make more of them through lists and antennas!

But Calckey is also like #WordPress in that it has:

1. Cloud storage
2. Galleries
3. Widgets
4. Plug-ins
5. Webpages

You can customize the look and feel. And, like WordPress, there's lots of wonderful admin tools!

Well, this is an unexpected curveball.

Jack Dorsey hopes that Bluesky will be “temporary”.

How likely is Bluesky to actually be “temporary”?

@atomicpoet @fediversenews ...this, to me, is the whole ballgame. Why, then, does Bluesky (purportedly) trump what Mastodon has done / is doing / will do?

Chris Trottier

Today is the day I talk about what #Calckey is and what it does. 🧵

In this thread, I will explore what I believe to be the most important features of Calckey.

SPOILER ALERT: While Calckey focuses on microblogging, that's where its similarities with #Mastodon (and #Twitter) end.

@fediversenews

Chris Trottier

Let's first take a look at what Calckey looks like in desktop mode.

As you can see, it's got a very media-rich presentation of a feed.

But there's also more!

On the right pane are some widgets. You can customize which widgets you see there. I opted to see trending hashtags and recent notifications.

On the right pane is the navbar. I'll get into that in a bit.

At the top are different feeds including home, local, social, recommended, global, lists, and antennaes.

Мя :sparkles_lesbian:

@atomicpoet everyone talking about cool features, but doesn't mention all misskey-based software curse:

Horribly slow, over-bloated front-end

It even has fucking scripting language. Implemented in fucking JavaScript.

It takes THREE spinners to show a post. And even more layout shifts. Maybe for someone who are used to twitter this is usual, but this is not okay

Chris Trottier

Good news!

calckey.social is now accepting new account registrations!

If you've been patiently waiting to join us, wait no more! We're open!

Our wonderful head dev @kainoa will be watching the server for the next few hours ensuring a great experience for everyone!

Welcome aboard!

Already there!… I haven’t checked but, is there an app version?

Chris Trottier

This take is annoying.

But it's also not entirely @gruber's fault because the media doesn't really talk about the Fediverse, and when they do, it's as a synonym for "Mastodon".

How would @gruber know about the massive development efforts to build more user-friendly alternatives to Mastodon?

No one in the media talks about the growth of *key apps, and how they're now the #2 most used Fediverse platform.

That story isn't being told.

@atomicpoet I've not used *key but presumably the negatives are similar there as here?

The issues of moderation etc must be similar across the Fediverse.. or have they somehow dealt with the CW issues that POC pointed out were unfriendly to them?

j_bertolotti

@atomicpoet
To be fair, even by specifically googling it, it is not easy to find a decent explanation of what calckey&co are, and why one should bother.
And this is a problem common to a lot of the fediverse: there are a lot of options out there, but for a newcomer it is almost impossible to learn about it (and I am speaking from personal experience).

gr0k

@atomicpoet @fediversenews There's definitely something to what @gruber is saying. With manual account approval on mastodon.social and it being pushed as the default, I'd love to see the abandonment rate... Perhaps it's different when signing up through a phone? But getting someone all excited about trying a new social network is hard enough. Now they have to retain that excitement for an unknown amount of time, and then care enough to engage at some later date... Not much fun...

Chris Trottier

Here's the problem.

Recent growth on mastodon.social is greater than the growth rate of November 2022.

But growth on other servers, like mstdn.social, has flatlined.

This has been confirmed to me by numerous Mastodon server admins.

Very concerning!

@fediversenews

:debian: 𝚜𝚎𝚕𝚎𝚊 :opensuse:

@atomicpoet @fediversenews

And it is because they claim that people are confused when they are going to chose a server.

I personally, think that changing the word "server" to "community" during the signup process would make the process easier for new users (I think/hope).

Chris Trottier

Look at the rise and fall of #BeReal!

This is why centralization of social media is such a bad idea.

BeReal is but one node. If it cannot sustain critical mass, it crashes and burns.

Meanwhile, every node that operates on the Fediverse *shares* the network effect!

No one company, institution, or service owns the ActivityPub protocol.

@socialmedianews

Steve Dinn

@atomicpoet @socialmedianews I had not even *heard* of BeReal until *this week*. I'm still not sure exactly what it is...er...was.

R F

@atomicpoet Maybe they should rebrand to ForReal?

Please donate to @dansup!

He's developing three important Fediverse projects:

1. @pixelfed
2. fedidb.org
3. fediverse.info

All these tools are critical to the future of the Fediverse.

In particular, #Pixelfed will be released on iOS and Android by the end of the month -- which will give people who use #Instagram and easy way to migrate to the Fediverse.

Dan does a lot! Let's show him appreciation and love!

🚨 MASTODON SUPPORTS RICH TEXT RENDERING! 🚨

No more unicode hacks! This makes the Fediverse more usable!

I knew this update was supposed to support this, but this is the first time I've seen this in the wild.

This post was composed in Friendica, and Mastodon now accurately displays:

* Quotes
* Bold
* Italics

Currently, I’ve only seen rich text rendered in Mastodon’s native web app. I don’t see it in the mobile app.

See screenshot!

WOW, Quotes, Italics, Bolds on Mastodon. So much quicker than expected.

Thanks for posting the image with the sample. It was good to see it.

@atomicpoet I keep forgetting that wrapping text in stars gives italics and two stars gives bold text in many apps.

You like stats and graphs?

I like them quite a lot.

fedidb.org has recently left beta.

Another thing that could be noted is that many of those projects, even on the Top4 list, aren’t mutually exclusive, but the other way around: it is VERY likely that one user can have an account on all 4 of those services, as they fulfil completely different needs.

Personally I have 5 different Fediverse accounts that all can be seen as my daily drivers (out of my 11 accounts in total) depending on what I wish to do, and it is very difficult to swap one out for the other as they are focused on different things.

🎈🥳 calckey.org is LIVE! 🥳🎈

This is #Calckey's official landing site for the project now!

Not only does it have incredible eye candy, it really demonstrates what's so special about the project!

Use it for finding Calckey servers, compatible apps, the official app, documentation, merch, and source code!

What do you all think of this calckey.org?

Also calckey.org follows your operating sysem's theme.

So if you use a light theme, it looks like this.

If you want to set up a Fediverse group (a.k.a., "Public Forum") on Friendica, follow these steps:

1. Create an account on Friendica. I prefer doing this on venera.social

2. Go to Settings > Advanced account types

3. Select "Community Forum" (a.k.a., group). Make sure Public forum is selected.

4. Click "Save settings".

If you want to see what a Fediverse group looks like, visit here: venera.social/profile/fedivers

Also see screenshot.

@fediversenews

dragfyre

@atomicpoet How does this compare to, say, chirp or gup.pe?

Stephan (moved house)

@atomicpoet not sure I am going to use Friendica, but at least I enjoyed reading the block list of Venera “Not my department” and “Nothing but f*cking porn”

Chris Trottier

If you create a Fediverse group, Mastodon will label the account as a Group.

Although Mastodon itself doesn't support groups yet, it is nice that you can use groups *with* Mastodon by tagging the group.

Chris Trottier

If you want to onboard friends and family to the Fediverse, jointhefediverse.net is an amazing tool.

Made by @stefan, this site explains -- in easy-to-understand words -- what the Fediverse is, how it works, and what to try.

This is a must for everyone who wants to tell the world about the Fediverse!

Hi. Don't mind me. I appreciate your contributions in making the FediVerse that much better.

I'm just responding to a need to express myself in a manner consistent with my being, so you should probably just ignore the next paragraph.

"ONBOARD" IS NOT A VERB!!!! "ONBOARD" IS NOT EVEN AN ENGLISH WORD!! "ON BOARD" IS A PREPOSITIONAL ADJECTIVE PHRASE THAT DOES NOT TAKE A DIRECT OBJECT!

Okay, all done. We now return to our regular programming.

That's a fantastic site. I really like the presentation, and the info given is very helpful. Thank you for your work, Stefan, and thanks for sharing, Chris.

One slight suggestion because I'm a total #news hound. Maybe add "or news" to this sentence? :)

"And every major social media site has a great alternative in the fediverse, so it doesn't matter if you're into sharing images, videos, or short quips."

Kynyc

@atomicpoet @stefan @fediversenews

Not a UX expert but that looks umm, insane to me.

Every single service is a new and often weird word, so that’s not plain language.
Example: People care about their Twitter network, which of the five weird names should they choose to replicate Twitter? There’s no indication. Not to mention none are all that similar to Twitter user base, which leads to disappointment.

@atomicpoet @pixelfed it would be even better if context was someone saying “so glad I just finished making that sweet, sweet pixelfed iOS app, can’t wait to upload it to app store in the morning.”

Chris Trottier

"Nobody cares about social media decentralization".

That sentence isn't new to me.

You know what? People have been telling me that for five years.

And for most of the time, they were right.

But I've been beating that drum non-stop, and haven't let up.

Now 16,656 follow me on Mastodon because they care enough about social media decentralization.

I'm not going to stop talking about it until the entire Internet cares about social media decentralization!
