Just a reminder that 0% of fediverse admins took on debt to support their communities. https://stefanbohacek.online/@stefan/112399842395585906 #fediverse #SocialMedia #sustainability #bluesky #VentureCapital I'm going to assume that folks who chose "selling user data" were joking, but do check on your server admins, just in case. Ah, for context: "Decentralized social app Bluesky announced on Thursday that it has raised a $15 million Series A round, following its $8 million seed raise last year." $23 million in debt. Wow. https://techcrunch.com/2024/10/24/bluesky-raises-15m-series-a-plans-to-launch-subscriptions/ I wrote an open letter to artists and other creatives who are thinking about giving the fediverse a chance: "There’s a better way!" https://stefanbohacek.com/blog/a-fediverse-invitation-for-artists/ Feel free to share, and be sure to add your signature! #fediverse #mastodon #creatives #artists #musicians #twitter #x

@stefan I find the wording a little strange honestly, but as an artist I completely support the sentiment. We need more creative folks in here! One stronger argument for me is that followers on fedi works very similarly to a newsletter, as if you want to switch to another instance or a completely different Fediverse service you are not loosing your social graph. So effort put into finding your people will not go to waste. But that would be even more real once post portability will be standard The signature verification system is still very much work in progress, but the source code is available at https://github.com/stefanbohacek/fediverse-signatures. If anyone would be interested in trying this out on their site, feel free to reach out! Happy #WorldTeachersDay to all teachers, tutors, and all the educators who continue to inspire each next generation. My late mom worked as a teacher. What a noble profession! And I myself really enjoy sharing what I've learned. It's a great way to learn something new, or reinforce existing knowledge. This pinned posts organizer for Mastodon is one of the tools I've made that I don't use very often, but when I do, it really comes in handy. Hope others will find it useful as well! Hey, anyone running a WordPress site interested in helping me test a fediverse sharing button plugin before I submit it for review? https://github.com/stefanbohacek/fediverse-share-button-wordpress/ Here's more about the project: https://stefanbohacek.com/project/fediverse-sharing-button/ #wordpress #WordpressPlugin #fediverse #SharingButton #SocialMedia #webdev

The plugin is under active development and will need to be installed manually, here's how: https://www.godaddy.com/help/install-a-wordpress-plugin-from-a-zip-file-40849 Some screenshots of the button added on a placeholder article: https://github.com/stefanbohacek/fediverse-share-button-wordpress/blob/main/assets/screenshot-1.png and the settings page: https://github.com/stefanbohacek/fediverse-share-button-wordpress/blob/main/assets/screenshot-2.png An early version of an idea I shared recently. Let me know what you think! https://fediverseexplorations.org And be sure to follow @FediverseExplorations! #fediverse #FediverseExplorations #SocialMedia #study #data #dataviz I was deciding between this being a blog vs a directory. I had a similar dilemma with some of the articles I posted on https://botwiki.org. I like having everything on my own site, but what if I own both sites? Sure, I can post the same article and use a canonical URL. But then I have to update both sites when making a change. I don't know. I'd be happy to hear from others who've dealt with this. Featuring work from @stefan@gardenstate.social , @tchambers, me, of course, and others. Do you know about an interesting fediverse study? Have you made one? Do you want to make one, and need help? Let me know! Probably the worst (definitely the longest) chart I've ever made. But it was fun!

@stefan not just the fediverse but I really want a :mastodon: share button across the websites and popular platforms like we have for Twitter, Facebook, Reddit etc (it's a shame YouTube dot com still doesn't have it) The adoption will come after the intrigue and familiarising it via a share icon will be of great service. @stefan the same bookmarklet code you use for Diaspora should work for Friendica too. https://wiki.friendi.ca/ressources?s[]=share
Good news, #GoToSocial users! You can now try out my #fediverse #dataviz projects, including https://data.stefanbohacek.dev/projects/fediverse I also updated my article https://stefanbohacek.com/blog/making-fediverse-apps-for-everyone/ Shout out to @andre who reminded me! The official Mastodon Android app now has QR codes for sharing profiles. Full changelog: https://github.com/mastodon/mastodon-android/releases Alright, what is the #fediverse? So apparently the term "patch" in software development comes from punch cards. "Small corrections to the programmed sequence could be done by patching over portions of the paper tape and re-punching the holes in that section."

@stefan Looks good. 91% for me. Noticed a couple of things. Some of the images without alt text were from private messages with individuals I knew would not need alt text. Exclude private messages? The other was videos... some of the third party apps don’t allow captions for videos. Will open an issue with them because it is supported by the api! @stefan I will note that capitalising your hashtags properly is kneecapped by this https://github.com/mastodon/mastodon/issues/27013 If your fediverse instance were to shut down today, where would you go? Voting ended 5 Nov 2023 at 14:24. @stefan I have another instance in mind already! Sometimes wonder if fosstodon.org fits my interests fully, but I'm a sentimental freak who can't leave my posts behind. "I’ve now been using [Mastodon] for about two months and I am here to tell you that it is, in principle, what we should want the internet to be." https://www.404media.co/mastodon-is-the-good-one/ via @404mediaco The David Rumsey Map Collection, a home to tens of thousands of historical maps, now lets you search the collection by the text in the maps. Via https://flowingdata.com/2023/09/28/search-the-text-in-historical-maps/ The interactive globe section is also pretty neat. Do you want to add a "log in with your fediverse account" functionality to your site? I am working on a self-hosted node.js server that lets you do just that. Care to give it a try? https://github.com/stefanbohacek/auth-server You can see it working on: - https://data.stefanbohacek.dev/projects/fediverse #fediverse #OpenWeb #nodejs #opensource #WebDev #WebDevelopment #selfhosted This project is still work in progress and currently supports: - Mastodon Botwiki, a site I made 8 years ago to catalogue creative online bots and collect resources for making them, is celebrating its anniversary today. https://botwiki.org/blog/eight-years-of-botwiki #botwiki #anniversary #EightYears #milestone #bots #CreativeBots A very much work-in-progress WordPress plugin for embedding fediverse posts. Any help and feedback will be very appreciated! https://github.com/stefanbohacek/fediverse-embeds-wordpress-plugin |
@stefan Unfortunately, I had to block/purge the domain becase sidekiq was giving errors every day, no ill intent and I do know you host your bots there. I do hope those users find a better home to host them.
That being said, why don't you host YOUR bots on your server? Is it the costs? Traffic too high? Just curious and trying to understand here.
EDIT: ah, I see the issues here, hardware lacks to run those.
@stefan This explanation is likely why the mastodon art masterworks instance was shut down earlier this year. It filled my feed with works from all the masters I subscribed to and gave me breath of fresh air. Since then, other instances with live artists have come on-line to fill that void.
Thanks for the hosting and contributing to the community.
@stefan oh that's depressing, I follow so many awesome bots from there. Here's hoping they all find a new home before December
