Here's the problem.

Recent growth on mastodon.social is greater than the growth rate of November 2022.

But growth on other servers, like mstdn.social, has flatlined.

This has been confirmed to me by numerous Mastodon server admins.

Very concerning!

And it is because they claim that people are confused when they are going to chose a server.

I personally, think that changing the word "server" to "community" during the signup process would make the process easier for new users (I think/hope).

@selea There's a few problems:

1. There wasn’t any wizard to help people find the *best* server -- it was just 10,000 servers and hope for the best

2. People don't know what "decentralized" means, so they go for the server that they perceive gives them the biggest network effect

3. People are being sold on "Mastodon as a Twitter replacement", not on "Fediverse as a Big Social replacement", which means federation is something people don't figure out until they register.

I genuinely think "people" don't care which is the best server, whether or not it's decentralized, etc. The bulk of the people who care about such things are already here.

People are looking for a microblogging place with decent audience reach and fewer nazis.

All those other things are selling points / nice to haves, but you'll never convince a whole generation of phone starers in the general public that a decentralized Fediverse is... anything. They don't and won't care.

They need to be convinced that the community here is better than the community where they are, and that's done by simply being better people.

They need to be convinced to get their mom, who follows their Twitter feed, to switch and follow their mastodon feed. There needs to be the kind of traffic on mastodon that they seek on twitter. That's what matters, not decentralized fediverses... the fediverse is the mechanism, people want the results.
