#Bluesky just added algorithmic content filtering. And here I find the most obvious problem.

They give you the option to show violent hate groups.

Which means they know their platform could be used to spread hate but are offloading moderation to users and algorithms.

What can ever go wrong?

Well, it means that if people deliberately want the option to show violent political groups, Bluesky has given them the welcome mat.

And based on what happened on Twitter, we know what happens.

@atomicpoet It's an intruiging concetp. I haven't used BlueSky, are they using their own ML models to categorize content into those categories? Or, crowd-sourcing the labeling?

Golda

@atomicpoet Sometimes violent content can be evidence of harms, also. I have posted violent content from sources.

@atomicpoet jesus thats insane. the "violence" is also one step away from "murder: show, hide"

Do you know that Senator Orrin Hatch had a music career?

He released 6 albums and 1 single.

I'm listening to him right now. He actually sounds... good. Kind of like the Mormon version of Neil Diamond.

You might be wondering, "How did I wind up finding Orrin Hatch's albums?"

I have a hobby where I try to find music that hasn't been heard by anyone.

Today, this album landed on my lap.

@atomicpoet I've heard the name before, I used to be LDS, I do not however like neal diamond. lol. the voice just grates on my nervs. It has this growelly gravel quality I do not care much for. Oh well. It works.

Actually, I’d like to speak to the manager of the Fediverse.

@atomicpoet Clearly it's the Fediverse's fault for continuing to spread more hate speech from these very hateful instances /s

Chris Trottier

How does any journalist, like Ben Collins, write this claptrap?

This whole “people just want to shitpost” has already wrecked social media, and journalists like Ben Collins should already know that.

Instead, it seems like Ben Collins values “shitposting” more than true earnest, thoughtful interaction with real human beings (not bots!) that care.

I am actually very glad that Mastodon isn’t about shitposting.

@atomicpoet This isn't difficult to use, it's just different. I had more trouble mastering Twitter in the early days, than Masto when I joined last November - and I'm now using two different apps managing two accounts. I also get way more engagement here despite no longer having thousands of followers.

I suspect a lot of the complaining about how difficult Masto is comes from folks who simply don't like change, and also don't want to lose the clout they percieve they have on the hellsite. Convincing their followers not to move by publicly criticizing the fedi, is another way to preserve their own imagined status.

Kinda sad, really...

Yet more Press that gets Mastodon wrong!

Mastodon’s growth has not slowed down. We just added 1 million users in less than a month—for a total of 11 million!

There was a momentary spike in November that resulted in Mastodon hitting 2.5 million MAUs, most generated from sign-ups.

But since then, the rate of growth has been consistent. In fact, compared year-over-year, sign-ups have more than tripled.

And that’s just looking at sign-ups!

Fabio Manganiello

@atomicpoet @fediversenews This is apparently a common pattern with the press: they keep confusing growth and rate of growth.

Chris Trottier

What I haven’t seen reported by the Press even once is that, last month, the Fediverse reached 1 billion monthly messages sent.

Which is odd because that’s a more significant metric than sign-ups and MAUs.

For one thing, it indicates that people are more active on Mastodon than they were in November when MAUs hit their peak.

But Press ignore that!

Dr. Juande Santander-Vela

@atomicpoet @fediversenews if the only metric they have for growth is percentual, then 1 million added after 10 million is less growth than 1 million added after 8 million… and that let's you say the grown has slowed down 🤦🏻‍♂️

🎊🍾🥳 MASTODON JUST REACHED 11 MILLION REGISTERED ACCOUNTS!!! 🥳🍾🎊

That’s 1 million new accounts created in the past month!

Infuriating! Yahoo News tries to tar and feather Mastodon with Discord! Yet, this article is wrong on so many counts!

Discord is not "distributed". It is a centralized and proprietary service run by Discord Inc. -- who have dropped the ball on moderation.

Mastodon is decentralized and open source, and individual server admins are very active with moderation. We put lots of effort into reporting CSAM, death threats, and other illegal material.

@atomicpoet @fediversenews Mastodon is on the right path. Otherwise, companies like Yahoo, the Guardian, PCMagazine wouldn’t feel threatened by Mastodon’s popularity. Despite what you read, Mastodon by years end will gain more users than Twitter. Twitter has lost millions of users since Musk took over the company. Twitter has become Elon Musk’s personal platform to express his Republican, right wing political views. He controls the narrative.

Kevin Karhan :verified:

@atomicpoet @fediversenews I guess for #TechIlliterate shitheads at #Yahoo everything that doesn't run on a single monolithic server inhouse is considered "distributed" even if it's the worst SaaS and comms tool ever released to the world.

WesDym

@atomicpoet It's just bad reporting. A quick read of Discord's WP page would have cleared up the confusion for them. (Well, maybe.) But they're half right. Individual Discord 'servers' ("guilds" in the backend lingo) are a lot like subreddits, in that they're part of the whole system, but (mostly) run by non-company users. But any similarity to Mastodon stops there. This reporter clearly didn't get it. Discord likely borrowed this usage from WoW, which works similarly.

Chris Trottier

Tomorrow, Mastodon will have its 11 millionth registered account.

That will mean 1 million accounts registered within the past month.

The most compelling part of Bluesky and AT protocol.

I can use my own domain.

No server admin has control of my social media profile address. No need for an “@“. Just verify the DNS record and the handle is mine!

Chris Trottier

Okay, but as cool as owning your own Bluesky handle via DNS verification is, I’m not convinced until I can use it on multiple servers that support AT protocol.

Osma A

@atomicpoet Using a naked domain as an identity is cool only to those of us who own domain names. It's a pretty exclusionary feature for a social network, I'd go as far as saying a contributor to why Bluesky will NOT be popular.

The coolest thing though? That you can(*) transfer your entire presence, history included.

* if only there was a second server to transfer to.

DELETED

@atomicpoet
You can't federate your own server/domain here?

Chris Trottier

Answering pushback about an earlier thread regarding Mastodon users not trying the rest of the Fediverse:

“What if I don’t like it?”

Now you know.

“I don’t want too many Fediverse accounts.”

Delete whatever account you don’t want to use.

“My friends don’t use those services.”

The great thing about the Fediverse is that your friends don’t have to use those services since ActivityPub exists.

“I don’t want to try anything new.”

That’s the excuse Twitter users use to not migrate.

@atomicpoet I came here after ditching Facebook. No one persuaded me; I sought this out on my own, and it’s sooooooo much better here.

Cảm ơn

@atomicpoet one of my frustrations with the fediverse is that I can’t reuse my existing Mastodon account for Pixelfed for example. I know I can follow Mastodon accounts from the Pixelfed side but I don’t understand why I’m required to have a separate account for Pixelfed.
For me at least, there is a barrier every time I am presented with a “Create a new username“ workflow.

Meg

@atomicpoet I deleted Facebook in 2020 but still use Instagram. That is the hardest one to kick as my close friends and family are on there. Without IG, I really do think I’d lose touch with a chunk of them. *sigh* 😔

Chris Trottier

Remember that real life is not like a video game.

If you die, there are no continues.

Chris Trottier

I realize that I seem unintentionally ornery today. My apologies for that.

Just received unfortunate news about a friend 😔

Chris Trottier

Everyone needs to know there's a Fediverse -- much like they need to know there's an Internet.

Referring to @pixelfed as a Mastodon app, for example, is kind of like referring to Wikipedia as a Facebook app. Yes, @pixelfed interoperates with Mastodon, but it's not a Mastodon app. Yes, Wikipedia connects to Facebook via hyperlinking and previewing, but it's not a Facebook app.

You wouldn't refer to Facebook as the Internet. This is why you shouldn't refer to Mastodon as the Fediverse.

@atomicpoet @pixelfed I understand your frustration but blaming the people has never been the right way. I recommend educating them. BTW when I search for a #pixelfed app the top hit is #mastodon 🤷🏻‍♀️

Greg Walsh,consulting designer

@atomicpoet @pixelfed @Coolmccool I think there are a lot of people who refer to Facebook as the Internet or at least as the Web. Most people don’t get the distinction between the Web and the Internet as well.

Happy Thanksgiving! 🦃

@atomicpoet honestly it feels like a chore. Just to see what it's about I have to download a new app and click through like 3 pages - feels very not worth it. For now.

It's not easy. It should feel easy.

I have too many Apps as it is. App fatigue.

Chris Trottier

In the future, we won’t have first and last names.

Instead, we’ll be referred to by our domains and subdomains.

My passport will say chris.trottier—and that will be that.

Bizarre! Bluesky doesn’t support hashtags!

By this, I mean that when you attempt a hashtag in Bluesky, it’s not rendered as a hyperlink.

And when you do a search for a hashtag, it ignores the “#” argument and generates results without it.

So I can’t say that Bluesky search is better than Mastodon—just that it’s the bizarro version of Mastodon search:

* Mastodon search = hashtags, no full text
* Bluesky search = full text, no hashtags

See screenshots.

@atomicpoet That will cause problems later. How long before userson decide to drop the hash mark (since it's not required for search)?

Chris Trottier

Bluesky has a lot more clout chasers on it. I’m seeing lots of accounts following me to try to initiate a follow back.

Some of them are following 15,000 accounts, which is the entirety of Bluesky.

How's the social environment over there? Are a lot of people posting? Or is it quiet?

noodlejetski :verified_gay:

@atomicpoet to be fair, I've had the same thing happen to me here a bunch of times.

Chris Trottier

Because some people believe that full text search on Mastodon hasn't been implemented for technical reasons -- this isn't the case.

Here's full text search as performed on vancity.social, a Calckey server that I personally run.

Full text search on the Fediverse already exists.

@rabble

Brett Kosinski

@atomicpoet To be clear, I have to assume this feature only indexes posts that arrive at your Calckey instance, which is basically equivalent to the Federated timeline in Mastodon, and doesn't represent all of the content on the Fediverse. Correct?

For the record, I dug around and it was tough to find a clear answer to that question, but given the way ActivityPub works, I don't see how it can function any other way...?

Chris Trottier

Just joined the Bluesky closed beta. I’m @atomicpoet.bsky.social

I’m trying this out. It’s supposed to be Mastodon’s future rival.

Bluesky is not compatible with Mastodon right now. While Mastodon uses ActivityPub protocol, Bluesky uses AT protocol.

What can Bluesky do that Mastodon can’t? Offer nomadic identity.

Keep in mind, though, that there’s Fediverse server software—like Hubzilla—that offers that feature, and they’re compatible with Mastodon.

@atomicpoet I put my name down for it when they asked, after Elmo took over the dead bird place. Now that I’m settled here, I’m not sure I want to start my profile all over again. AND they have not emailed back to invite me or advise me of whatever is available. Reading your breakdown, I note they have quotes-tweets, and that was the source of so much trolling and hate in the other place. Stalkers and trolls seem far less here. That’s huge.

Paul Wilde
@atomicpoet I think Mastodon (well, I really mean the fediverse) doesn't have rivals. Sure, there's financially movitated stuff that is similar, but it's not a competition for the fediverse. I believe (hope) the fediverse will continue in some form regardless of whether *new app x* becomes popular or not.
I mean, iirc is still popular yet it still has, in this context, "rivals"
