Infuriating! Yahoo News tries to tar and feather Mastodon with Discord! Yet, this article is wrong on so many counts!

Discord is not "distributed". It is a centralized and proprietary service run by Discord Inc. -- who have dropped the ball on moderation.

Mastodon is decentralized and open source, and individual server admins are very active with moderation. We put lots of effort into reporting CSAM, death threats, and other illegal material.

@atomicpoet maybe it was just a typo and they were thinking of matrix

Sbectol :twt:

@atomicpoet ah. Fair enough, you are quite right.

I wonder if AP is using chatgpt..

Chris Trottier

It's gob-smacking that because a white supremacist leaked state secrets about Ukraine on Discord, they decide to throw Mastodon under the bus.

No, Discord's toxic userbase is on Discord, not us.

Chris Trottier

I will not deny that there are problematic Fediverse servers that exist.

You know what's funny? Most of them aren't using Mastodon. Instead they typically use Pleroma with a Rebased or Soapbox front-end.

But that's neither here nor there because, yes, problematic Fediverse servers (including Mastodon) do indeed exist. When I see them, I report them on Fediblock -- and urge everyone else to de-federate.

Most Fediverse server admins are doing more for community safety than Discord Inc.

Chris Trottier

The subtextual implication seems to be, "Decentralized services result in abusive trolls that aren't moderated."

Well, seeing how they're reporting on Discord as the vector of abuse, and Discord is *actually* centralized, that undermines their argument.

Twitter is the same way. And so is Instagram.

See a trend here?

@atomicpoet Everything old is new again... remembering 'communist' Linux and open source. The corporate class knows a threat to their business model when they see one.

@atomicpoet

I assumed Mastodon would have moderation problems when I first joined.

It's the best moderation I've ever seen. Vastly better than corporate platforms.

@atomicpoet when it comes to discord. It depends on the server. Most of the time you going to run across a decent staff team. But everyonce in a blue moon. There will be a discord server that problematic. -a mod that tends to run strict rules for my servers and follow strict guidelines.

Dentaku (Thomas Renger)

@atomicpoet Since they also bring up Reddit I assume they confuse decentralization with separate closed group forums. But then again those also exist on Facebook.

@atomicpoet Does Pleroma has moderation tools equivalent to Mastodon?

Perhaps it's a technical issue since those instances can scale big fast without breaking a sweat, making moderation far more crucial.

Chris Trottier

@jbzfn Pleroma has even better moderation tools than Mastodon!

Also, I run a Pleroma server at atomicpoet.org.

@atomicpoet you can't beat the work ethic of a busy volunteer?

JohnW

@atomicpoet @fediversenews Isn't Yahoo News not really their own thing? Just an aggregated source of other media (like RSS).

JohnW

@atomicpoet @fediversenews They should probably just go back to aggregated media. 😅

Peter Butler

@atomicpoet @fediversenews What an odd summarized quote from Cyber Threat Alliance chief executive Michael Daniel. Bizarre

@atomicpoet @fediversenews Ah, the eternal guessing game “evil or disinformed and lazy”?

Morten Juhl-Johansen

@atomicpoet Jason Davis describing Discord as "a place for rebels and nerds (who) embrace that kind of anti-mainstream sentiment" is also a lovely nugget.

@atomicpoet @fediversenews is this written by chatgpt? seems legit but is somewhere completely wrong. had exactly this when i asked it about python. was correrct until it went off rails but still seemed correct

gavinisdie :troll:

@atomicpoet @fediversenews I have called Mastodon (and in turn the Fediverse) a mixture of Twitter and Discord

Silent Observer

@atomicpoet @fediversenews That “error” is bad enough to be considered slander.

@atomicpoet @fediversenews Isnt yahoo like fox news for email? I had to close that account bcs of their security issues. Their news reporting sucks, as you just pointed out. 😂

Chris Zero

@atomicpoet @fediversenews The only thing accurate about Yahoo News is their name, and much like those who think they're a wit, they're only half right.

DELETED

@atomicpoet
This is sensationalized reporting at its worse. They know that the fact-checkers won't bother so they just included someone else in an attempt to find more for the story. Nothing else was needed!

We don't need literal apocalypse conditions to take things seriously and our latest death loop journalism of making everything the worst thing ever - is just adding noise and needless distraction.

@fediversenews

Shoq

@atomicpoet @fediversenews

While you are 100% right, we do need to find a way to make these structural differences more widely known. Re-educating journalists (who have a lot of really bad intel about the Fediverse) should be a priority.

joe

@atomicpoet @fediversenews Lmao

So either the Yahoo News writer is ignorant of Mastodon/Discord ... or worse: the Cyber Threat Alliance Chief Executive is ignorant of two incredibly popular platforms

Either way, reality is stupid

Philip Mallegol-Hansen

@atomicpoet @fediversenews Discord really did a disservice to everyone by calling the grouping mechanism “servers”. It’s cute, but totally dishonest.

Fedo ¶

@atomicpoet It’s funny (in some ways) how people don’t understand that Mastodon is not a platform but a software (kinda) so they’re actually talking about a cluster of indipendent websites.
It’s like blaming the whole web for white supremacy because white supremacists are on 4chan 🌚

Skylar Caulfield :verified:

@atomicpoet @fediversenews really hoping us senators don't make stopping people from self hosting a priority after tiktok. I could imagine needing a us gov license that cost millions in order to host your own wehsite. Mega yikes.

@atomicpoet @fediversenews
You'd think Yahoo would know more about the internet.

@atomicpoet @fediversenews Mastodon is on the right path. Otherwise, companies like Yahoo, the Guardian, PCMagazine wouldn’t feel threatened by Mastodon’s popularity. Despite what you read, Mastodon by years end will gain more users than Twitter. Twitter has lost millions of users since Musk took over the company. Twitter has become Elon Musk’s personal platform to express his Republican, right wing political views. He controls the narrative.

Kevin Karhan :verified:

@atomicpoet @fediversenews I guess for #TechIlliterate shitheads at #Yahoo everything that doesn't run on a single monolithic server inhouse is considered "distributed" even if it's the worst SaaS and comms tool ever released to the world.

WesDym

@atomicpoet It's just bad reporting. A quick read of Discord's WP page would have cleared up the confusion for them. (Well, maybe.) But they're half right. Individual Discord 'servers' ("guilds" in the backend lingo) are a lot like subreddits, in that they're part of the whole system, but (mostly) run by non-company users. But any similarity to Mastodon stops there. This reporter clearly didn't get it. Discord likely borrowed this usage from WoW, which works similarly.
