Yep, this is a good summary of Meta Verified.

For $15/month, you’re paying to be doxxed.

The only way you can change your name or profile photo is if you cancel your subscription, make changes and subscribe again.

But hey, you do get a fancy blue check.

@atomicpoet@mastodon.social ah yes, that's exactly what a trans-friendly company Meta claims to be would do

Chris Trottier

Twitter might have to pay more in Germany’s anti-hate speech fines than the company is worth.

This alone could cause Twitter’s bankruptcy.

I mean, many things could cause Twitter’s bankruptcy. This is almost like a “Choose Your Own Adventure” novel right now.

And paying anti-hate speech fines just happens to be one possible adventure.

Is it wrong that, when I read the highlighted sentence, I immediately asked, “Will Elon Musk pull a ‘Weekend at Bernie’s’ with Twitter?”

Because if things are leading up to that, well, now it all makes sense.

Steven Rosenthal

@atomicpoet Don't think he's leading up to it. I think he's already propping up a dead body.

IMO, he knows it's dead. People would rather lose their check mark than buy Blue, advertisers are skeptical, he's about to fined a lot of money. Bankruptcy is near and he's just having fun with it while it lasts.

Chris Trottier

At some point, I really do expect Elon Musk to kill off Twitter during a weekend, and act like there’s still a party going on with all his bots talking to bots.

Chris Trottier

Good point from @mistercharlie. If there’s any argument for A.I. doing social good, it’s in image-to-text capabilities—as demonstrated by Midjourney.

This could be a game changer for accessibility, and getting detailed alt text descriptions.

The Fediverse could be on the cutting edge of this tech since it’s easier here than anywhere else to add alt text descriptions.

Good alt-text is not strictly about describing the image - it's about SITUATING the image.

As an autistic person, I find notifications to be incredibly stressful and I shut them off whenever I can.

What’s just as infuriating is that stupid red dot with the number in it. That one makes me tear my hair out.

Sometimes people get angry that they can’t a hold of me, but the consistency of a working routine is too important.

@atomicpoet I hate Teams with a passion but one thing I don't mind is the fact that it doesn't have that weird, annoying clicky thing Slack has. Somehow, I find Slack's version even more stressful than 'bing!'.

But the red can f off.

DELETED

@atomicpoet I only turn on notifications when they provide some use to *me*, and even then I make most of them go to the notification area and stay there until I'm ready to check them. I don't allow badges at all, I don't need to know how many unread messages I have, I'll clear them when I'm good and ready.

I agree with @thedextriarchy. Shoving as many hashtags into a Mastodon post feels like spam.

Unfortunately, if you want to be discovered on Mastodon, that’s what you got to do.

This Verge article suggests that removing hashtags from the post body could be a solution (à la Tumblr).

But there’s an easier solution: allow full text search.

Almost every other Fediverse service allows this, including Akkoma, Calckey, Friendica, etc.

@thedextriarchy @fediversenews @atomicpoet it's not even hard! i implemented Mastodon full-text post and account search with advanced filters and prototype opt-in in github.com/VyrCossont/mastodon and a few instances are already running versions of it: the largest ones i'm aware of are universeodon.com, which sponsored part of the work, as well as cupoftea.social and infosec.exchange.

from what i've heard back, none have taken a noticeable performance hit over what it takes to run ElasticSearch in the first place. resources aren't the real issue; it's a product direction problem with brand-name Mastodon.

Vijay Prema

@atomicpoet @thedextriarchy @fediversenews I don't like the look either but the main reason I used them inline is that my server has a 500 character limit, and often I cant waste it. Another idea would be if Mastodon hides the hash symbol and instead renders some subtle text effect to denote hash tags, so it looks less ugly.

Separately, full search would be cool. Not sure why anti-search, given other fedi apps have it. I thought maybe performance or index storage issues, or fear of scraping.

Elon needs to get a job, seriously. I'm really starting to worry about how much time he spends on social media.

Chris Trottier

Having looked through the Federated feed, yeah, I’d agree that much of Mastodon’s recent growth is due to bots.

But this isn’t a bad thing. 95% of the bots I see are actually helpful.

For example, sportsbots.xyz is excellent for updates.

It’s pretty obvious to me that this bot-driven growth is due to Elon Musk killing off the free tier for Twitter API access.

Courtesy of @jwallen, ZDNET has published a guide on how to migrate from Twitter to Mastodon.

People are wondering about the longevity of Twitter.

That’s because they haven’t considered the longevity of LinkedIn.

David Farnell

@atomicpoet ouch. Yeah, I'm always a little shocked when someone asks if they can connect with me on LinkedIn. Like, last time I even opened a LinkedIn page, it took me three years to stop receiving spam from them.

Chris Trottier

I mean, really, LinkedIn.

The biggest bullshit generator on the Internet.

The place where people brag about cooking food in a coffee pot in order to save the company money.

The place where AI writes posts—with full LinkedIn approval—and nobody notices.

That social network still has longevity. If LinkedIn still exists, so will Twitter in the next few months.

krood

@atomicpoet does it though? Isn't it a Microsoft holding now? What's the probability Twitter goes into 2nd division pretty soon?

Side note, Lynda is playing 3rd division with Microsoft and LinkedIn as heads. Lynda was awesome. So was GitHub. Microsoft suck!

2. Don't be a concern troll regarding causes that I won't compromise on
3. Don't be a Karen (yes, male Karens exist too)
4. Don't be a reply guy trying to show off expertise that you clearly don't have
5. Don't hijack threads to push your own content

It’s a very American white cis feminist thing to say that the abortion pill ban is the only thing that matters right now.

* Mass shootings are increasing
* Black lawmakers are denied their place in government
* Transgender people are denied their human rights

And that’s just happened recently.

Yeah, I tend to think there’s other concerns that matter—and you all should start hearing from people affected by them.

Maybe you should also consider what’s happening in the rest of the world.

Someone just got upset because I’m not talking about an abortion court case that happened in the USA.

The reason I haven’t is because:

1. I’m not American
2. I’m not a doctor
3. I’m not a lawyer
4. I don’t have a uterus

No one needs me to pontificate on that topic, and I’m more than happy to pass the mic.

We should hear more from people who are directly affected by this decision and/or have expertise.

If you want to know what I think, it’s that folks with a uterus should be heard.

A mother and daughter were already arrested based on a Home device listening.

Yes, on this subject, we women who do or do not want to bear children should be consulted.

I really can't imagine here in Germany that it would be forbidden.
Even in very religious Greece (I am Greek living in Germany) is abortion allowed.
