Twitter might have to pay more in Germany’s anti-hate speech fines than the company is worth.

This alone could cause Twitter’s bankruptcy.

I mean, many things could cause Twitter’s bankruptcy. This is almost like a “Choose Your Own Adventure” novel right now.

And paying anti-hate speech fines just happens to be one possible adventure.

@atomicpoet What happens if he just doesn't pay it?

I wonder what portion of users that would lose them if Germany just banned them.

I also wonder how many of those cases would actually come anywhere near the max of $50 mill for a fine? Thus I wonder what the actual total might be.

I keep have this nagging feeling this is what he wanted the whole time, not the bankruptcy part, but regulators and governments coming after him and Twitter. So he can spin it as "attack on free speech".

@atomicpoet

Are there anti-hate speech laws and fines in the US?
If not, why?

Army Girl

@atomicpoet it appears Germans are more protected from hate than Americans.

On a larff, I decided to see what the oddsmakers have to say about this all; this delightful image was in the 1st link Google offered. Still looking for anyone who's willing to take an actual wager...

@atomicpoet
Twitter is only bankruptcies. It's the trump of social networks.

@atomicpoet that would be amazing. Like the ghosts of those who fought fascism in WWII, rising up to beat down the fascists one more time. Poetic.

@atomicpoet even if they give him a fine, it won't be the levels that it _could_ be. And he will find a way out of any fine either way. The slippery rich rarely get properly caught out.

@atomicpoet I’m having more fun watching Twitter burn down here than I would be there.

Elfbiter

@atomicpoet Considering the fact that Musk is already taking money from his other companies to keep Twitter afloat, Twitter might not be the first one to go under

Quarky

@atomicpoet I see he is now reported to have merged Twitter with X Corp so Twitter is no longer a separate company.

Savvy Susan 2

@atomicpoet well the Germans are pro Biden and Ukraine that tells you what their real agenda is on several levels

jaduncan

@atomicpoet It's not even what the company is nominally worth, it's what it can pay. Value only matters if they have lenders or buyers.

David Swords

@atomicpoet It’s very unlikely that the company will go bankrupt. The people providing the funds behind the purchase have very deep pockets, and are willing to pay for the influence. Especially over US elections.

Steffen Voß

@atomicpoet It's not in the interest of those who fine Twitter to bankrupt it. The fine will be significant but not ruinous.

@atomicpoet
Fingers crossed. I note that Twatter Inc no longer exists. The Incel Musk has merged it into something called X Corp. I’m not quite sure of the implications, but maybe he thinks it’ll side-step the legal action.

iamBullivant

@atomicpoet Let's hope the Germans take Twitter out.

Evergreen Toot fka Chip Butty

@atomicpoet won't the fine be on X now that Twitter has been folded in?

Jürgen Hubert

@atomicpoet ...where do get English-language news get these high fine levels from?

The highest sum I've seen from German-language news was 50 million Euros - total.

Runyan50

@atomicpoet @BlackAzizAnansi A thing that happens too quickly: global warming A thing that happens too slowly: Twitter’s demise.

It's like they'd have been better off if Elmo had just paid the penalty for cancelling the deal.

@atomicpoet Although this would be an exceptionally just and appropriate end as the largest self-own of all time!
