How does any journalist, like Ben Collins, write this claptrap?

This whole “people just want to shitpost” has already wrecked social media, and journalists like Ben Collins should already know that.

Instead, it seems like Ben Collins values “shitposting” more than true earnest, thoughtful interaction with real human beings (not bots!) that care.

I am actually very glad that Mastodon isn’t about shitposting.

@vl1 Shitposting has its place but once a social network is overwhelmed with it, it becomes 4chan.

@atomicpoet Define shitposting-- I like to shitpost sometimes because it's funny, but maybe we have different definitions.

"It's too hard for normies to use"

You go to a website you log into the website, you shitpost on the website.

There is literally no impediment at all to doing so on Mastodon.

The real "problem" is that Ben Collins is not special on the fediverse. He receives no special status or amplification on the fediverse.

But, also, it's not like you have to solve a multi-part riddle then answer a skill testing question before you post.

Quick guide for "normies" on how mastodon works:
you just type some words in the little box and press publish.

@atomicpoet This conversation seems to be lacking a definition of shitposting for us to coalesce around. Is it silly banter intended to amuse, or is it intentionally provocative banter with ill intent? If the former, then I enjoy following a few ex-birdsite shitposters, but don't often boost them because that's not the tone I want to set for my account. But I fully support their right to exist on the universe. All power to the user for deciding what kinds of accounts they want to follow. Here in the Fediverse we get to create our own experience based on what we're looking for.

@atomicpoet I like Ben, and hope we manage to change his mind about posting here (which he did at one point, I believe.) That said, I think it's *very* unlikely there's a large number of users whose main interest in social media is shitposting. In fact, most users are primarily readers/consumers, and the success of the current social media 'champion,' Tiktok, is in providing them with fast and fun entertainment.

@atomicpoet Wait, this is hard?

I'm more talented than I thought!

@atomicpoet I like Mastodon because it can be about anything you're interested in. It's nice to be able to define the rules of what you see.

@atomicpoet This isn't difficult to use, it's just different. I had more trouble mastering Twitter in the early days, than Masto when I joined last November - and I'm now using two different apps managing two accounts. I also get way more engagement here despite no longer having thousands of followers.

I suspect a lot of the complaining about how difficult Masto is comes from folks who simply don't like change, and also don't want to lose the clout they percieve they have on the hellsite. Convincing their followers not to move by publicly criticizing the fedi, is another way to preserve their own imagined status.

Kinda sad, really...

@atomicpoet Isn't this the exact same thing people were saying about Twitter in the early days?
