So I need to translate "What's new" into every language of the App Store page on every app update? Starting to understand why people go for "Bugfixes and improvements" now... I had the opportunity to observe a peer that's never heard of Mastodon go through the iOS app onboarding process a week back, and it all went smoothly up until the regional server they chose turned out to block sign-ups with GMail addresses. I later notified the owner of that server and got it fixed but how long did it go unnoticed?

@Gargron Gmail and #Google in general have become quite evil so people should switch to #protonmail or other better more private companies. I worked with the current product manager of Google Chrome named Nasim Sedaghat and while she is nice and technically talented I am not afraid to say she does not care about users and privacy but simply about career as she has admitted on a tweet.

Last iOS app update added multiple languages like Catalan, French and Spanish, though I don’t think I’ll be able to see how many people are using those languages which is a bit of a shame. I guess we’re also missing localizations for the App Store page itself…

@Gargron I would love to look into contributing and potentially overlooking an Icelandic translation (although I do not have an iPhone...). Is that a possibility? I'm translating the app into German and wondering if "you" should be "Sie" or "du" 🤔 What is the expected form in apps nowadays?

@Gargron As far as I can tell, direct speech is usually avoided in apps in German, instead opting for a more indirect infinitive form when possible (although the past years have shown an increase of "du" in ads and apps alike). @Gargron Good morning fine fellow! Today the head of a Discord server announced that the artist they liked turned out to be a terrible person, so I decided to comfort them and tell them there are artists out there that happen to be good people. Everyone on the server, it seems to me, liked that. I cannot overstate how convenient Apple Pay is. I didn’t have a single CHF on me the whole trip. I didn’t even need to carry my wallet around.

@Gargron I'm happy for you but also having a hard time understanding why carrying a wallet is inconvenient. My wallet works when my phone is dead, broken or lost. It helps people identify me if I'm in distress and cannot speak, it carries cash which is usually acceptable everywhere. It only takes up 3 by 2 by .5 inches in my front pocket as it is minimal in size and I don't carry 800 club cards Eugen: "hey apple pay is pretty cool and easy" Tech Bros: "How dare you use Apple pay you should be using gold coins you mint yourself using nuggets you mine from the ground in an undisclosed location"

To those upset about some design decisions in the iOS app: Nobody’s forcing you to use the iOS app. I’m fully aware that it takes a different turn from all other existing apps in some aspects, and that’s the point. If it makes the fediverse larger by retaining more new users, then I’ve succeeded and everyone benefits. If not, nobody except me loses.

@Gargron I like it. I do kinda miss access to the bookmarks though but I can always drop down to the web interface for that. I rarely check the local or federated timelines, so I don’t miss that at all (and again I can drop to the web if I want to check those). And it seems stable and fast. So I’m calling it a win. Thanks! And as I said, the #iOS app is open source. I’ll request a Crowdin project soon. However, just because it’s open source doesn’t mean that we’ll accept any change through PRs. If you want to be sure, contact me first.

Does anyone know if App Store reviews take a while to show up in the interface, or have none been submitted so far? 🤔

@Gargron I could only leave a star rating since I’m running iOS beta, but I left a five star rating 💁♂️ @Gargron They've been published already: https://apps.apple.com/us/app/mastodon-for-iphone/id1571998974 There’s an small effect you can see if you tilt around your phone on the welcome screen of the #iOS app

@Gargron The Apple app store is a quasi-monopoly. Epic is right.
@Gargron I demand "Sup, Yo?"
@Gargron Apple is fine with copy/pasting English notes across all the translations you support.
