To those upset about some design decisions in the iOS app: Nobody’s forcing you to use the iOS app. I’m fully aware that it takes a different turn from all other existing apps in some aspects, and that’s the point. If it makes the fediverse larger by retaining more new users, then I’ve succeeded and everyone benefits. If not, nobody except me loses.

@Gargron It's puuurfect! 😄 don't let people tell you otherwise!

It's good there's a big range of choices.. for everyone there's something

@Gargron I like it and using it all the time so thank you!

@Gargron People are upset that you don't recognize differences in use from your instance, and a long pattern over the last few years of you shutting down any discussion that doesn't agree with you.

You run your projects as tyranny, not democracy, and most of us are here on fediverse because we despise tyrants like Jack or Zuck… You don't want to be on that list.

So try some democracy and maybe you won't always get this kind of pushback and mobs drawing pictures of guillotines.

@Gargron I disagree with some of the design decisions, especially around the local timeline, but… that’s okay? I won’t use that client, but that’s fine. The vitriol I have seen directed at you over this is just absurd.

@Gargron the iOS app got me to try Mastodon so it already a win. I’m looking forward to trying the other apps and finding out what Mastodon is about.
Don’t like the app? Don’t use it? Fork it and make it your own? Use another app?

@Gargron Social media can be (but doesn't have to be) used as an outrage amplifier, exhibit 2526B.8n ☕

@Gargron That's disappointing to hear. I was extremely looking forward to it and assumed the lack of the local timeline was because the app was new and still finding its feet. The majority of the interactions I have with people on my instance are those on the local timeline. One of the biggest problems with Mastodon has been discoverability and this makes it even harder.

@Gargron You lose? Wasn't the development paid from the donations made to Mastodon project?

David Cross

@Gargron I largely agree with you, but some of the experience differences were explicitly added to the web app as a result of careful consideration. I speak explicitly about confirmation of boosts and favorites. Mistaps are even more likely than misclicks with a touch-only interface. Ask me how I know!

Jon

@Gargron I understand pushback over the iOS app. Apple is just harder, more expensive to develop for and very particular. I feel your troubles.

@Gargron If it's any consolation, I'm liking the new app so far. :)

@Gargron making the fediverse larger is not success. Don't reduce human connectivity to that.

@ailurocrat If non-commercial decentralized social media is better than Facebook and Twitter, then surely getting people off those platforms sooner rather than later should be the ethical thing to do. Sometimes i feel like people here have a very selfish desire to keep what’s good to themselves.

Spark Purcell (they/them)

@Gargron don't misunderstand: I'm not saying keep it to ourselves. I'm saying keep it away from corporations and advertisers and "growth is the only thing" type attitudes. Of course get everybody away from the corporate platforms.

@Gargron I'm mostly a desktop person, and mostly Android when I'm mobile (I have an elderly iPad that is my business device, and run Amaroq only for the biz account on m.art), so my opinion may be worthless but: the local timeline is worthwhile on almost every instance *except* this one, so leaving it out is kind of problematic and I feel like it sends the wrong message. 😔

Michael Bond

@Gargron Thanks for making it available on M1 Macs!

@Gargron No, why can't it be all things to all people, how dare you

Jeff Jessie

@Gargron good job building an app for the whole. I appreciate it for what it is, not my favorite but I appreciate an official app. Best wishes toward the future and keeping things awesome with the Mastodon community.

Natalie56

@Gargron Why is the moderation for the largest instance so strict?

Natalie56

@Gargron A user was banned for inquiring as to the status of gab in the fediverse (a site which has since removed itself from the fediverse) under the suspicion that they were a gab user.

Natalie56

@Gargron Thanks for responding, by the way. :)

Gino Luciano

@Gargron personally I love it. It’s very clean

Atri

@Gargron its incredible that the local timeline even exists for something that is I tended to be first and foremost federated. There are alternatives for closes communities if you want that.

prasoon

@Gargron
1. No one forces me to use Twitter but, my country's govt decides to use it for their PSAs, at times exclusively. "No one is forcing you" is a weak argument.
2. You'll get more people supporting any arbitrary decision that you take unilaterally because you've got more clout, you can choose to tell them that a minority voice of reason that's clearly explaining why they need the local TL for smaller instances can, in fact, be respected because this is not Twitter.

wakest ⁂

@Gargron that’s honestly not your decision alone to make though Eugen. The fediverse is made up of tons of communities and by having this new official app linked on every install that has this radicle departure you are making a decision for everyone. Now many instances that rely on the community built around the local timeline are going to have to explicitly state to everyone that they should not use “the official” app if they are to partake in the community in the same way.

@Gargron I am personally using Mastodon rn because it has an iOS app. Always heard of Mastodon but never gave it a look. I read on the @verge I think that Mastodon has a new iOS app and here I am trying it. I’m thinking of trying it out of the iOS app to see how it always have been. I am happy you made that choice.

Maverick

@Gargron I like it. I do kinda miss access to the bookmarks though but I can always drop down to the web interface for that. I rarely check the local or federated timelines, so I don’t miss that at all (and again I can drop to the web if I want to check those). And it seems stable and fast. So I’m calling it a win. Thanks!

Aaron Garcia :v21:

@Gargron it’s a good app. It loads faster. A first release and it feels perfect.
