What kind of name is SBB CFF FFS anyway, are you a train company or are you sneezing

@Gargron SBB CFF FFS stands for Schweizerischen Bundesbahnen (SBB), Chemins de fer fédéraux suisses (CFF), Ferrovie Federali Svizzere (FFS). ... In other words, “Swiss federal train” in German, French, and Italian.)

no dreamer, no eater of leaves

@Gargron since I still can't remember what FFS stands for, I choose to remember it as "SBB?!? CFF, For Fuck's Sake!"

tom h

@Gargron when I had a gf in switzerland we always pronounced this as "SBB CFF For Fuck's Sake"

@Gargron some times it will be hell others you'd get someone who actually knows what their doing

Eugen Rochko

Build rejected because it links to the GitHub of Mastodon which links to the Patreon :cate:

Picking a title for the App Store page is not easy. Just "Mastodon" is taken by someone - I can't find who or what. So needs more words. "for iOS" is redundant and not permitted. "Decentralized" is so long it doesn't leave any characters for the noun. Besides, I don't want any technical jargon. Any words that a random internet user won't immediately recognize. Twitch has it so easy with its "Twitch: Live Game Streaming". Short and clear.

@Gargron I’m of two minds about using some variation of ‘fediverse’… on the one hand, I don’t know if normal uninitiated people would grok what it means. (I wasn’t familiar with the term before the period in which I became interested in joining, but I’m a sample size of one.) On the other hand, it would help advertise the existence of other parts of the fediverse if it’s in the app name.

@Gargron I am fond of themes that indicate user control. Maybe something like "Mastodon: Free your time(line)"

An Englishman

@Gargron "toot(ing) on Mastodon" - describes what you do with it!

We've got the graphics and the text for the App Store page... The finish line is in view

It's always DNS, and sometimes it's IPv6 too.

Ali Mirjamali

@Gargron
Our NAT scientist superheroes will save us from IPv6. It will be always DNS which will haunt us forever.

Eugen Rochko

The issues with loading/uploading images on mastodon.online should be fixed now

Wilson :nfld_flag:

@Gargron Old thread, I know, but I am facing a problem where users connected via IPv6 can't upload media.
If you can remember, what was the issue/solution for you?

@Gargron Zuckerberg is facing a lawsuit soon ..personally I can't stand him after what he helped to do to the 2020 Election

Polychrome :clockworkheart:

@gargron like the time he killed XMPP for Facebook Messenger :blobcatinnocent:

Acaii

@Gargron he's describing the fediverse like it didn't exist.

@Gargron I have grave reservations about anything from Warner Bros. They just can't keep their nose out of the director's way

JACKSON

@Gargron Is Lynch involved ? I kinda hope he is but am still excited about it regardless

Eugen Rochko

What do you think about that hidden dislikes on replies idea that Twitter is testing?

@Gargron I’m more interested in the ability to restrict who can reply to a post. Options like:
- Anyone
- People I Follow
- Just Me
… would be good both for cutting down on harassment and also letting me post an entire thread and then only allow replies at the bottom.

Minty

@Gargron I'd much rather see a hidden like function so I don't encourage flame wars when I like something that is distasteful to half of my followers but not the other half.

Eugen Rochko

If you had to use a simple, verb-centric sentence to describe Mastodon, what would it be?

Why is the word for butterfly different in almost every language?

Show previous comments
DanielTux

@Gargron
Well, is it?
German and English both refer to making of butter (indo-germanic).
Latin languages seem to be similar, even farfalla might be a form of papilio. (en.wiktionary.org/wiki/farfall)
Greeks are on their own, with an ancient and current version.
So, seems like the same as with hand, manus, chira :)

PeHa5772

@Gargron in most languages I know it sounds good: in Dutch: vlinder France: papillon English: butterfly except for German, it sounds pretty horrible: Schmetterling (sounds like a 🦠).

@Gargron As someone who uses an Android, I can sense hope… or perhaps it’s just me?

It's nice to see this so-called attention economy in flames, at last.

As a user, I generally oppose the very concept of advertising anywhere at all unless that place is directly related to shopping. If I wanted to buy something, I'd go to a mall, thank you very much.

Eugen Rochko

Do you think it would be helpful if you could select which rule you think a post/account has violated when making a report instead of having to type it out by hand?

Eugen Rochko

I need to figure out which accounts (with permission) to feature in the App Store screenshots and I'm not even sure where to begin...

Eugen Rochko

Thanks to the generous help of the previous owner of the mastodon username on GitHub, our GitHub organization has finally been renamed to mastodon! 🎉

I know that changing the repository URL is a bother but I think it’s worth it and better done sooner than later. Tootsuite was not serious and had no connection to our actual name.

It's been at least a month since the Spotify desktop app redesign and I'm still struggling with using it

Why is search behind another click now? I have to hunt down "recently played" in a random spot on "Home". I just accidentally clicked the green play button when I didn't mean to because I mistook it for a "scroll row to the right" navigation button because all of these things are single rows and you'd assume they scroll, right? But no, you have to click "see all" above

@Gargron I use it as a webapp, first it was weird and so on, but after time, I got used to it and I like it. The redesign was way far earlier accessible from web than the app itself 😉

Jens

@Gargron Spicetify can fix some of these problems: You can customize the Home screen by pinning segments like Recently Played to the top so that they are always visible or hide other segments. Highly recommend it if you're fine with running a modified Spotify client. It also has nice themes, support for add-ons, a better playlist shuffle script and some other nice things. github.com/khanhas/spicetify-c

codythedragonrude

@Gargron can we all just go back to buying physical media?

at least that was easy to figure out and did not require metadata collection via internet to use

Eugen Rochko

Next week we're going to get to the creation of the App Store assets/copy so I guess the release of the app is creeping ever so closer
