Guess what! Mastodon’s official #Android app was finally approved and is now on the Play Store. https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=org.joinmastodon.android F-Droid submission still being processed.

@Gargron I have found that the Mastodon app cannot be found by the play store app on the phone....you have to find it via the play website and tell it to install to your phone instead (or be logged into your Google account on a phone browser and install it from there.

@Gargron This would be a good idea! Or some sort of grouping system would be awesome too. Mastodon for iOS is in the Top 100 free Social Networking apps in Germany, Spain, and Greece!!

@Gargron I hope that it’ll work alright… There's an uptick of sign-ups on mastodon.social larger than on the day Musk bought 9.2% of Twitter's shares (that's the other peak). I suspect similar graphs across the entire Mastodon network (at least I hope so!)

@Gargron We got a ton of new signups recently too, so that is probably very accurate!

@Gargron I'd imagine that you're even more stressed with moderating the massive new influx. Hope you find some time to relax. :BigBlobhajHug: @Gargron You work so hard. And honestly too many people give you a hard time for stuff that you're trying to fix that really isn't (at least shouldn't be) your problem. Take it easy... You know how Spamhaus wrongfully added us to their spam blocklist because some malware retrieved a public profile on here? Like, made a normal HTTP request to a public page that happened to be on our domain? Well, I obviously contacted them and had us taken down from the list, but now Kaspersky seems to have taken that information and added us to their blocklist. I've contacted them as well but this is getting ridiculous.

@Gargron im facing the same issue. grabbed my phone and gave some blocklist maintainers a call, only half of the entries at virustotal went away. now i don't bother with it anymore and assume that everyone still lives in a free internet. Just for expectations management: Our Android app, like the iOS one, is oriented towards new users as well as people who primarily use Mastodon through their home feed. If you rely on local/federated timelines to use Mastodon, you won't find it useful.

@Gargron aaaaand ok, we got it. It make sense. https://github.com/mastodon/mastodon-ios/issues/221#issuecomment-890335633 Speaking ‘bout other features: would it be possible in the future to have link previews like on Metatext or Toot App? 🖖🏻♥️ @Gargron I'm very curious about this product decision, is that supported by some metrics or is it arbitrary? If the latter is true, what are the criteria that led you or anybody to decide so?

@Gargron Fdroid is considered, thx :)) Using Librem Social & Tusky. Looking forward to try it. About "Push notification"; android with MicroG works well with this. Some apps are using their own notification code (Ex. Threema). Its an extra background ptocess, but Im personally ok with it. Good luck with all Starting with Mastodon 3.5, we no longer try to auto-detect your posting language. It defaults to your interface language, unless overriden by setting it explicitly per-post in the API, or setting in Preferences -> Other.

[DATA EXPUNGED]
@Gargron It seems that only the toots posted by people using the same Interface Language as you can show up in the Explore Tab. For example, if someone posted a Chinese toot using an English interface, only those who also use English interface can see that Chinese toot in the Explore Tab. It doesn't make much sense to me. Is it a bug or is it intentional?
[DATA EXPUNGED]
Our iOS app has entered Top 200 free Social Networking apps in Finland and Czech Republic. Hopefully just the beginning!

@Gargron looking forward to more updates. #technology #heardle #wordpress The "sign-in token" authentication scheme, where you had to enter a code from an e-mail if logging in from a new IP address, created too many issues, so in 3.5.1 we're going back on it. Instead, you'll just get an e-mail about a new sign-in if it's from a new IP address.

We're also bringing back e-mail notifications for mentions and follows being on by default, but now we won't send an e-mail if you already have an app that gets push notifications or you're connected to the web app.

The good news is that our Android app development is moving really fast and we’re only missing the settings screen now. I think it’s reasonable to expect the app to launch within the month.

We’re going to try to hurry and release the Android app as soon as possible. And yes, we’ll try to publish it on @fdroidorg as well. Even two years on, I still have no idea which direction #Bluesky is intending to go. Though it seems like if they wanted to adopt an existing protocol, they would've already done so. I'll only say that the challenges of building a decentralized social network are anywhere but the actual protocol. Mastodon started on one protocol, then switched to another. Decisions that matter are in product design. Marketing. If they propose a new protocol, what would make it worth resetting all that to zero?

@Gargron I'd like to see less "designing the perfect system for one day maybe" and more adoption of Matrix and Mastodon as "the best options available today" People will agree and say "Things should be distributed" on their Twitter account or on Discord but they won't say "...but right now, today, you can go and create an account on Mastodon." @Gargron the aim of BlueSky seems to be to create a decentralized, federated social network that is controlled and monetized by a single entity. In other words, to square a circle. So this is going exactly as well as could be expected. 😉 |
@Gargron Well there are Lego movies that are pretty good, so I'll give it the benefit of doubt
@Gargron In a world…
