Guess what! Mastodon’s official #Android app was finally approved and is now on the Play Store.

F-Droid submission still being processed.

@Gargron Another app, it's great.
Are there many differences beetween this new app and Fedilab @apps and Tusky ?

xypnox

@Gargron Great Job! I'm happy being one of the 1st who downloaded😉

@gargron

So we better wait for FDroid to announce and deliver. :))

@Gargron Is there a way to view the federated timeline? I can't see such an option

rob

@Gargron If it wasn't for this post, I wouldn't have found it. It doesn't seem to come when i Arc search the Play Store.

@Gargron I can't install the app though the play store on my phone.
It says that this article isn't available.
I am using a Motorola Moto G8 Plus with Android 10.
Now I installed the app though the APK file.

Benjamin 👨🏻‍💻🕊, that's strange, I've never seen anything like this. It doesn't say something like "not available for this device" either, right? Just "not available"?

Benjamin 👨🏻‍💻🕊

@grishka Yes, "Dieser Artikel ist nicht verfügbar." means "This item is not available."

On the Google Play website, it says "This app isn't available for your device", though.

I had the same thing with #SchildiChat (schildi.chat/) - a matrix client a while back, maybe someone from there knows what the issue was.

Григорий Клюшников

Benjamin 👨🏻‍💻🕊, that's strange. I've double checked that the only requirements are a touchscreen and Android 6.0 (or newer). Google Play is sometimes sneaky with this stuff, like it thinks your app requires that the device has a camera if you declare permission to use the camera.

@gargron
I give it 1-2 months before the official #Mastodon app is mysteriously taken down from the #PlayStore for breaking unspecified "community standards" and then only restored after weeks/months of community outcry, leading to being picked up by major news outlets.

#Google will then either ignore that it ever happened, or profess that it was "an accident".

@Gargron I've been using Tusky. I'll check it out. Thanks. F-Droid will be even better.

Phil

@Gargron So I don't have to use Tusky anymore?

Gabor

@Gargron downloaded, testing now! So far, very pretty 🥰

Stiké

@Gargron congratulations! Big step forward... Thank you for your great work, and please congratulate the team as well.

Mastodon will prevail!

@Gargron Loving it so far - it works like a treat!

@Gargron congratulations!

I added both iOS and Android clients to the #delightful #fediverse clients list.

@Gargron can't believe there's been no official app all this time! @PixelFed next hopefully

Wonderfall

@Gargron Ideally the F-droid version should have its own ID, and the Play Store version too if Play App Signing is used (haven't checked if you're using app bundles).

So something like prefixing the ID with org.f-droid, which they don't do by default (except if they detect a gradle flavor, apprently). This will solve some issues related to signature conflict, which some users can experience by using different app repositories.

@Gargron Great achievement! I find the app too limited for my use though. All I can see is my local timeline. Can't just select an account i'm following to see all their posts. Will stick with #tusky for now.

@Gargron just installed the Mastodon app - it looks great :)

@Gargron The number of followers of a user in the android app doesnt match with the real number of followers.

@Gargron just installed and made this account to test, thanks to HN headline.
How's the Twitter cross-posting story for migrating audiences?

@Gargron is it georestricted or something? If I click the link it doesn't open the playstore and says no app has been found, and when I search on the store directly tiping "mastodon" gives me only third party apps

@Gargron Commenting from the Android app right now and must say it's really a smooth experience !

@publicvoit hier ist der Direktlink für den Playstore

joene :ecoan: :bij1_flag: :antifa: 🇵🇸 🕊️

@Gargron Would be very fine if a new version is released now (1.0.1 or 1.1), because people can't sign-up on servers that require approval (github.com/mastodon/mastodon-a). Also some other important fixes where pushed, see github.com/mastodon/mastodon-a. I think now Google has approved it, releasing newer version will be easier.

Justice

@Gargron I am using it right now. I am glad it has been put on the Playstore!

Ksully

@Gargron I have found that the Mastodon app cannot be found by the play store app on the phone....you have to find it via the play website and tell it to install to your phone instead (or be logged into your Google account on a phone browser and install it from there.
Not sure why...but am suspicious
