@Gargron I only use Spotify on my laptop. The web player on Firefox is great! By that I mean it's barely functional and breaks all the time, but I can use an adblocker on it, so it's brilliant. Suck my ass Spotify, no ad money for you!

SIBIRIAK

@Gargron Hi! Do yo know why videos added via youtube links always change? the link remains original, but the video embedded in the post changes to random video.

@Gargron On this topic, you might want to check out SimplyTranslate: simplytranslate.org

It has an API that supports several backends (Google, DeepL, LibreTranslate), and provides a layer of privacy for users.

@Gargron what I see in the timeline global/local, is a lot of publications with different languages, what I would like is for there to be a filter that separates those publications in their corresponding language, so that later in the search engine I can search for the language that interests me and see all posts in that language

4kfoki

@Gargron It is interesting, how the local/global timeline is composed, with publications in different languages, I do not want that to be modified, only that there is a filter option in which I can choose the language that interests me, to save time in finding a publication in my language

@Gargron any plans to focus on improving Mastodon's compatibility with plain ActivityPub services?

@Gargron Wow, just reviewed the release notes. Seems like a huge release. Congrats.

Anyone know if Apple's Smart App Banners appear in PWAs already added to the home screen?

Turns out around 700 GB of media storage on mastodon.social was being consumed by multiple Twitter "bridges" running on different domains, reposting Twitter users' tweets into the fediverse as far as I'm aware without their (the Twitter users') participation or knowledge.

That's 10% of our media storage accumulated over 6 years. At least cross-posters set up their own accounts, that's still legit use. This, it just feels so wasteful. How Twitter even gives out API keys for this, I don't know.

@Gargron Wish there were a better way to federate content in.

Damian

@Gargron it's so important that content creators, viewers, data analysists and technology enthusiats alike to come together and start investing in smaller websites and social media outlets

eons Luna

@Gargron snap, I might be guilty of this (I have Twitter-Mastodon crossposting enabled).

Should I turn it off?

Deployed a change that makes profiles load so much faster.

Um... you do know how invading another country works, right? *Literally* trying to remove the independence of another country! ๐Ÿคฆโ€โ™‚๏ธ

Sadman ๐ŸŽต

@Gargron the sad reality is that there is some truth to this. Not the US, but the world forgets events and only studies popular history, which is written by the victors. Examples like Churchill's genocide in Asia, US invasions of multiple countries in the middle-east and Israel apartheid are all great examples.

mihai_zainea

@Gargron Declarations like this make me sick and angry. The situation is dire and on top of it you come with shit like this.
It seems one cannot be an accomplished statesmen w/o coming with something like this. And, the worst part, is not an isolated case.

@Gargron I've heard that the individually wrapped "cheese" slices are 1 molecule away from being plastic. They call it "cheese food". I never knew cheese needed to eat. ๐Ÿ˜‹

@Gargron I missed the poll, but I use it a bit. I would probably use it more if there was a way for people to categorize their account by topic and you could filter by topic in the directory.

I'm curious how other server administrators are handling users' reports of various degrees of pro-Russia content at the moment. Despite my personal position on the matter, I don't think any of our current server rules cover this situation, and while I am not certain if they should, the reports do keep coming.

@Gargron So is it wrong to say both Russia and Ukraine are bad? In one hand it appears Russia is liberating Ukraine of as many neo-nazis as he can. Along with all the US biolabs and on the other hand Ukraine was bombing 2 provinces and terrorizing the people for a couple of years or so because they are Russians mostly. I'm pro neither country but am pro truth and really hate legacy media. Should I toot negative toots about Ukraine along with Russia or will that get me kicked off this platform?

GSUGambit

@Gargron I have not seen any. I think administrators can block access to certain instances. You've developed a great product to handle situations like this at the admin level

danbri

@Gargron is there any way for you to somehow plug in links to articles from independent factcheckers? Eg see fullfact.org/about/automated/

Since Mastodon culture is wary of risks associated with crawling/search etc., I was wondering about other ways for fact checks to be connected up with problematic postings, to provide an alternative perspective. Should factcheckers make accounts and solicit tips for where to engage?

Eugen Rochko

If you are siding with Russia's government during this conflict, please block me.

@Gargron if anyone sides with Russia, they would've sided with Hitler. Remember these people. They are sociopaths.

@Gargron It's worrying the number of Pro-Kremlin accounts I've seen on here, though with Birdsite now blocked in Russia, I guess it's not the biggest surprise...

@Gargron Lucky for them they're perfectly capable of defending themselves. Just ask Stalin.

sudoLife

@Gargron this whole affair sounds quite similar to the Cuba crisis, when the Soviets put missiles close to the States, and the States did the same to the Soviets. In the end, both sides retreated.

It's just that Russia really hates having NATO's rockets close by, which is sort of understandable. I'm not justifying Russia's actions, of course.

Disclaimer: I don't know much about politics, these are just my intuitions. As you're native, you probably know better.
