Do you expect that when you mute someone on Mastodon, you no longer see any post from anyone that merely mentions that person?

@gargron at least direct replies to them. if i don't want to see a person i probably don't need to see people talking to them either

@Gargron "Any post" would mean all posts of that associated person or only the posts where the person is mentioned?

@Gargron More than that, I’d like I could mute only notifications from an account, but without hiding their other posts on Home and public timelines. Currently, we only can do the contrary (hide from timelines, but not from notifications).

@Gargron it is unexpected... but now that you're mentioning it... :catThink:

@gargron
There are arguments for both. I think, it's
mute != nuke
If someone has serious trouble with just reading a name, i think, in this case the situation needs special care.

@Gargron nope. i feel it should be a further level of restriction in interaction between users, something like:

· mute: don't see that person publications.
· filter: like above but also don't see that person mentions from other ppl.
· block: like above and also don't let that person see any of your activity.

@Gargron I blocked a bot domain and I can still see boosts. Same for bots muted.

@Gargron It's unexpected that you would not see mentions of the person. But sometimes, you might *desire* to not even see mentions of them.

ozamidas

@Gargron At best, offering the option to mute any mention of whoever you've muted is the way to go.

But making it the by default options sound like too much.

Dave

@Gargron No, I'd expect to mute exactly the posts of that account. But I'm also technically inclined, so I tend to ascribe hard definitions to those action words in a UI.

However, it would be a nice convenience function when the UI would ask me on muting whether I also want to filter all toots mentioning that account (and in reverse on unmute).

Steinar Bang

@Gargron It depends on "no longer see any post from that person ever" or "not see any post from that person in that thread"

I don't expect the first, but I would not have been surprised of the second happened.

Plexer

@Gargron It's not expected, but would be a good optional feature for those who want it.
