A quick 10 minute devtools mockup of a Threads-like Mastodon theme. Just for fun.

@rolle the site to show to the people who say "Mastodon/the Fediverse is dead."

@rolle It's kinda unreadable IMHO, it needs some buffers like #Twitch added to their native livechat client

I feel this describes a bad amount of people using Mastodon. Like, is it an age thing, or a culture thing? Mastodon is fun but I feel like people on the platform have a weird expectation for Mastodon to be a lifestyle or something more than literally just a website.

Misskey's size, development history, and decentralization are all comparable to Mastodon, and it seems like people there are a million times happier on average.

It’s approximately one year since the peak of the enshittification of Twitter and the big Mastodon influx. Let’s ask again: What is your main microblogging platform? Boosts welcome.

@rolle Want to make sure @Teri_Kanefield sees this!

I would love to keep Mastodon as my home base and selectively connect to Bluesky accounts.

Lee Calvin

@rolle As those are my two preferred social media platforms this is welcome.

Matti Järvinen

@rolle totally mixed feelings. Moderation might be of an issue if the latest Jack Dorsey social media ends up like the X.

@rolle promising that mastodon is a safe space is dangerously overoptimistic, people have been burned believing that promise, is it better? Heck yes, but "safe"? no, not by a wide margin.

Chris 🌱 :verified_purple:

@rolle under safe space I'd honestly say Masto is a "maybe"

Far more likely than in the other spots ofc

@rolle

I'd like a row for whether posts can be viewed without an account / without logging in.

I think X/Twitter is "sort of" because now you can only see one post, but not all the replies, if someone posts a twitter link.

I don't know what the status is for Bluesky or Threads.

I think on Mastodon public posts w/ public replies can be seen without logging in, as long as no blocking or other federation issues?

Please correct if wrong!

I'm so excited to share Mastopoet, a tool made by @raikas that allows you to capture Mastodon posts as beautiful images and share them across the Internet. This makes posts much more eye-catching in other social medias for instance. :bunhdheart:

Use the tool: mastopoet.ohjelmoi.fi/

Browse the source code: github.com/raikasdev/mastopoet

Mastopoet supports #MastodonBirdUI and options to show metrics in textual or icons or hide them completely.

Please note: If you use this tool to share toots, remember to copy the post text as alt text, thank you!

looks very cool - but:

hmmm … this tool supposedly jas CORS issues at the server - and I should contact the admin … sorry, but I don’t know what that means ..?
@ruud

Alex Gizis

@rolle @raikas says “CORS issue detected!” Before i enter a url. Works great when i ignore it and put in a url.

Saket

@rolle @raikas Tagging @IceCubesApp to see if this is a cool feature to add (and if you decide to implement it, maybe automate adding the post text as the image alt text? 😁).

I was looking for a reply in a post earlier this year but then found it's gone. This is kinda a downside, I wish old replies could be re-fetched, never thought it's "impossible to undo".

It could work in a way it would backfill the replies once the post is accessed, but tech-wise I understand if it's not possible.

Question for admins: Are you doing something to circumvent this?

#MastoAdmin #Mastodon

Masto.host suggests this should be left blank. Never realized how dangerous this is for the content on your own server.

I would like to endorse other minor web apps in the #Fediverse, but most of them are full of UI glitches, are incomplete and downright buggy looking odd things.

From my designer point of view #Mastodon and #Pixelfed are the only effective ones, because they speak to people who are used to proper visual design language (read: Non-nerds, non-engineers, the regular people and design oriented people).

Things like #BookWyrm, #Lemmy, #Friendica and newer niche apps cause reactions like: "What is this?", they look like back end is fine but nobody is in charge of the design and the UI has no direction whatsoever. It's the general culprit in the programming world: A back end developer thinks everything is fine when we add a CSS framework and that's that.

If we just get the UI right everywhere, we get more people to the #Fediverse. I just wish there was more #CSS/design people willing to contribute. #UI #UIDesign

I've been always attracted to beautiful things. I always list pros and cons in the things I use. I go through dozens of options.

The user interface has HUGE value for me and it can weigh so much it can even top some of the downsides. But even if ALL of the other features are fine and the UI is bad, I have no desire in using the software. It's just the way it is and I'm pretty sure bad UI is a big turn-off for most of the people. Who doesn't love nice looking things?

@rolle Great work Roni, you should get hired by Mastodon 😉

#Mastodon is far better than any microblogging service out there. It has all the features that many don't, for example content warnings, editing posts, high character count, post visibility settings per post etc... It's a dream as platform. However #UI-wise I think it still has long way to go. The current default UI feels old-ish and a bit clunky. Thankfully it can be improved by apps and UIs.

Because Mastodon is #OpenSource, I've been able to make changes to my own instance. I've seen lots of different social media UI's since the times of Jaiku and there are good choices that have been forgotten. The hellsite got most of it right and it's been my inspiration in regards to user interface. As a designer and developer I create the UI improvements for myself that I think Mastodon is missing.

Hence, the #MastodonBirdUI was born.

There have been lots of suddle changes over the weeks in my instance. Let me present some of these. I'm quite proud of what I have achieved as a designer and developer. My instance is now top notch for me. There is always room for improvement, but it's already like 99.9% there.

I just hope Mastodon itself will get even a pinch of these in the core, some day. Most notably the real numbers for OCD and neurodivergent people, free resizing of the compose box (#a11y), one level threads and if one can hope, a bit of white space and minimalism in the design.

I also have Linux in a VM. And an iPod. The MacBook is dead and gone, but I did check it.

It's funny that some people still say "Mastodon is the new Google+" and predict that this "too" will die eventually. They are just forgetting that Google+ was hosted by Google and killed by Google. Mastodon is hosted by no one in particular so it really can't be killed unless all the thousands of servers are killed.

No one is saying that "Internet will die eventually". The same pricinples apply for Mastodon, because to permantently be wiped out would mean an extinction level event. Ironically enough, mammoths died of extinction but Mastodon will prosper. #Mastodon #SocialMedia

No one is saying that "Internet will die eventually".

But there used to be people saying that, in the early/mid 1990's. Just like people today don't understand the fediverse, they didn't understand the internet. (And frankly most people still don't.) Even if Mastodon should wane in popularity, and even be replaces by another fediverse server, the fediverse will be relatively unaffected.

@rolle others already compared it to IRC which makes more sense. It may fall out of fashion and become a wasteland like IRC but it will never actually die outright.

This being said I am pretty sure we’re still in the growth phase. Once you’ve tested no ads & no suggested posts (also ads) it feels crazy to come back to commercial social networks even if that’s still normal life for a vast majority.

Hiro

@rolle@mementomori.social the same goes with other fedi servers like Akkoma, Misskey and so on :blobcat_snicker:
