@zav_ Yeah I don't know why I made this poll 🤷‍♂️

Martin Ruskov

@rolle @zav_ I guess I got confused because I saw a discussion in an issue on the mastodon GitHub

Adam Gamble

@mapto @rolle @zav_ Would be handy to rank these choices as I would assume "Not owned by a single company and cannot be bought" is the #1 thing for a lot of people

:blobcatverified2:
@rolle
> You own your data
I guess that point is the most controversial point since all posts which are posted public cant be owned due to how fedi works
Marquise de What :unverified:

@rolle my "something else" is appreciation of the values and principles of fellow users, who either chose the Fediverse long ago, or are birdsite refugees who fled the hatefulness that the latter became.

Chris L

@rolle it is entertaining without being addictive. So when I have time I can post a lot and then when I am busy I can ignore it without bad feelings. And people seem to be trying to be kind and reasonable.

James Trickle uP

@rolle My instance is community self governed and admined by a rainbow of very competent individuals.

Ilkka Tengvall

@rolle i wish for choise of open algorithms to use.

Jeff C. 🇺🇦

@ikkeT @rolle One thing I appreciate in this post is the “commercial” qualifier with the algorithms option.

Algorithms aren’t inherently bad. They’re often quite useful.

The issue isn’t whether there is an algorithm, but rather whose interests it serves.

Roni Laukkarinen

@jeff @ikkeT I agree. That is exactly why I chose the word ”commercial”.

Kestral

@jeff @ikkeT @rolle most modern technology isn't inherrently bad or evil. It's how its being applied that is.

Anis

@kestral @jeff @ikkeT @rolle oui l'intelligence artificielle c'est un très bon exemple de ça ça dépend si la personne qu'il utilise c'est s'en servir et connaît les dérives qui sont liées c'est la même chose pour toutes les autres technologies

ewan

@rolle for me, on Catodon, it is great to have proper standard markdown support (in the works).

I know that it's not exclusive to Catodon by any means, but along with its direction, I think this is great software. plus, if I ever need/want to jump to Mastodon or Akkoma or whatever else, I can!

rina

@rolle something else: it feels less like an advertisement space where everyone screams into the void (sideeye to insta)

J Miller

@rolle

Moderation and Mastodon server covenant.

Martin B.

@rolle much less (almost non-existent) toxic environment.

Anꞇóin Ó B.

@rolle

Something else - a user is a user and not an instance admin or moderator because of personal choice.

Jocelynephiliac :reclaimer:

@rolle generally a safer community with much stronger and more effective content moderation than any large company can fiscally attempt

Ari [APz] Sovijärvi

@rolle Instagram & x: "Oh, you seem to post and react to posts about classic arcade games. Better force non-stop US right wing posts on your timelime. P.S: here's also porn bots liking your posts".

stereo griever

@rolle completely different culture, brought by the non-profit, decentralized nature. no fights and making fun of each other all the time. no constant trolling of company accounts. we are free to set much better standards in the community by defederating, and we do

afreytes 🇵🇷:godot:☭

@rolle very sad that the excellent filtering system didn't get a spot

Roni Laukkarinen

@afreytes I thought about it, but didn’t want to have 20 option poll. So it’s ”somethin else”.

Der grüne Skatbruder

@rolle The people are also pretty great. With very few exceptions of course.

Delia Christina

@rolle

Something else: it's dorky as hell and I love it.

cognitively accessible math

@rolle So I went over to the blue sky thing but hoo boy, it feels like the bird site, just not as much of the cliquey tunnel vision stuff but enough of it to make me come back here and wish more peole would.

Eh?!?

@rolle
Among "something else":
- no quote feature
- does not push to hoard followers, views and likes

Antranig Vartanian :freebsd:

@rolle My short answer is “It’s a protocol, not a product”.

phi1997

@rolle
The one issue I have is that while Mastodon is better than other social media, I'm not sure it's actually healthy.

phi1997

@rolle
Right, but that doesn't make it actually good for you

Roni Laukkarinen

@phi1997 It depends on what do you consider being good for you. A very subjective thing. But in general I think it as a healthier side.

Silly Jim - webcomic

@rolle Looks interesting, though 10000 chars is a bit too much I think and invites people to write more detailed then needed.

On the other hand, I've been looking for a feature that would really be interesting: make a regional setting for the explore tabs.

mastodon.social/@stupidjim/111

Because here in the EU, 32 countries, and even on mastodon I still only get suggested US stuff, which is really annoying and kind of why I left regular social media. I could explain you more detail if you'd like.

@rolle Something else: It's non american. (here in Europe we only have american corporate social media, not a single EU one)

ResearchBuzz

@rolle The people are 500% nicer and there are some stunning photographers in this joint

Wherz Demloots

@rolle Mastodon is the only place I've found so far that doesn't have massive tankie presence, they are not as plentiful or actively harmful as fascists but they ruin most spaces I'm interested in frequenting.

ahimsa

@rolle
A couple more things:

* I can follow hashtags
* Filters!
* Public posts/threads are visible without having to log in

(if server is set up to allow this, I know some servers are private)

Astra :neofox_confused:

@rolle because the people on fedi aren't completely awful like on other sites. that's it, really

DELETED

@rolle One of the reasons is the time I spend here. When using Instagram, I click on the discovery feature and the algorithm make me stay there for 2 hours straight.

On the fediverse, I enter to read what's new. There's no algorithm to suggest me something I didn't see before, so by consequence I spend much less time here.

tl;dr: Mastodon explore page is more ethical than Instagram's.

eri :vlpn_smol:
@rolle i made my own server and no matter what i won't wake up and find i was banned from here.
TJ

@rolle something else: it’s not Twitter

Robin Adams

@rolle "No commercial algorithms" - more than that, no algorithms at all. If I follow somebody I see all their posts. 'Follow' is not just a friendly suggestion.

(OK yes, technically "Show everything in reverse chronological order" is an algorithm. But you know what I mean.)

DELETED

@rolle it could even have ads but only if the ads doesn't spy or collect any data

DELETED

@rolle

Surprised that "my instance can block entire other instances that are full of transphobes and Nazis" isn't on that list

Cryptomon

@rolle I love love love the privacy level per-post feature!
My default is "followers only", but since I can open it, I can interact with everyone in the Fediverse -- on the bird site no one had seen my posts 😔

Acorn Squashbuckler

@rolle Kind of covered by "not owned by a single company", but I also like some of the fractured community aspects that come with that. It sometimes leads to instance drama, but ultimately I think it's healthiest that my instance isn't obligated to interact with all the other instances. It makes moderation more effective and generally improves the experience for everyone.

Silke

@rolle You can choose to run your own instance.

dietpunk

@rolle All my friends Move here, so I also moved here.

Paladina

@rolle i like mastodon because the people
