It's funny that some people still say "Mastodon is the new Google+" and predict that this "too" will die eventually. They are just forgetting that Google+ was hosted by Google and killed by Google. Mastodon is hosted by no one in particular so it really can't be killed unless all the thousands of servers are killed.

No one is saying that "Internet will die eventually". The same pricinples apply for Mastodon, because to permantently be wiped out would mean an extinction level event. Ironically enough, mammoths died of extinction but Mastodon will prosper. #Mastodon #SocialMedia

@rolle Except the internet already died. What we are using now is the 3rd or 4th version of it really, and has no similarities to the original 90s web, or very little.

Mastodon itself while never die, it will never take off either. It has so many problems, because the devs are just handholding everybody via software. It’s crap!

@rolle Yeah. mastodon.social might die or be shut down. And joinmastodon.org might die or be shut down.

But Mastodon is a federation of independent servers, built on a protocol. And the software that runs it is open-source, so even if the "official" development team stops working on that code, someone else will take it over, perhaps rename/rebrand it, and it will live on.

Mastodon has evolved far beyond the control of the person who originally envisioned it.

But that's one of the things about open-source that most corporately- and capitalist-minded people can't wrap their heads around. :)

But there used to be people saying that, in the early/mid 1990's. Just like people today don't understand the fediverse, they didn't understand the internet. (And frankly most people still don't.) Even if Mastodon should wane in popularity, and even be replaces by another fediverse server, the fediverse will be relatively unaffected.

@rolle others already compared it to IRC which makes more sense. It may fall out of fashion and become a wasteland like IRC but it will never actually die outright.

This being said I am pretty sure we’re still in the growth phase. Once you’ve tested no ads & no suggested posts (also ads) it feels crazy to come back to commercial social networks even if that’s still normal life for a vast majority.

@rolle@mementomori.social the same goes with other fedi servers like Akkoma, Misskey and so on :blobcat_snicker:
