@Gargron Awesome. Letting people filter is good. So are explanatory notes. Non-tech people can understand servers and decentralization enough to sign up and use mastodon.(I saw comments on another platform suggesting otherwise.) They just need the type of things you described here.

I suspect that having to choose an instance is still preventing many people from joining.

What about allowing a simplified sign-up procedure for beginners that do not care about instances?

Something like allowing to create an account on a random general server would simplify the process for beginners.

I would like the following functionality in mastodon:
when uploading an image containing IPTC/IIM and/or XMP metadata, then automatically populate the caption field with the content of the IPTC/IIM Caption/Abstract field (or its XMP equivalent). Just like Flickr does.
This could be very useful for different projects.

And since mastodon.social keeps lagging occasionally: if the DB server turns out to be the culprit, have you considered or even tried using a CockroachDB cluster as a drop-in replacement for PostgreSQL? Can you think of any obstacles?

@Gargron I see you're using Hetzner servers. When ordering new ones please take a look at their RX series (with ARM64 processors). These are real, 80 cores, beasts with outstanding performance.
