I've changed quite a few parts on joinmastodon.org/servers today in response to the feedback from the past week. In detail:

You can now filter by region, type of legal entity, and sign-up speed. Added note about why the topics filter exists. Changed tagline.

"Get on waitlist" has become "Apply for an account" for servers that manually review new sign-ups. Removed total user count from cards.

@Gargron Thanks for your efforts here, I saw your interview in TIME magazine. I miss Germany something fierce, I used to live in Baumholder many years ago.

@Gargron working amazing right now. Pics posting immediately thank you

@Gargron When will the new version 4.0 of Google Play be available to us?

Zate 🦘🇦🇺

@Gargron is there an API for that server list? I'm trying to build a global/fediverse wide hashtag list to help people organise around hashtags - hashtags.fyi - does something like that exist? I've been using instances.social API to get the list of servers to poll for trends.

@Gargron Hi. I am sorry to be a bother. Completely new to this site.
I am trying to look up/read on terms of the site/policies (so that I don't break them).

When I click on about, it takes me here to your page. Also from the email.

Also, how do I look for/find specific servers? Say I want to join a history server.

Thanks in advance!

Dakta

@OscarHarris @Gargron You could stay on your current one and look at #history and so on, follow a few people, follow who they boost if you are interested etc.

Oscar Harris

@Dakta @Gargron Ok. Will look through hashtags see what I can find.
Problem is, I don't know which server I am in, and I don't see other options from my main profile/home page.

And with the terms, is what I stated above. All I see is Eugen profile, but not a list of terms for me to read on.
i.e it says (in Eugene's profile) "No content illegal in Germany"
How do I know what type of content that is?

Thanks for your help!

@Gargron I've heard complaints from people who find the whole "choose a server" thing intimidating. They just want to sign up on Mastodon and take it for a spin. Maybe add an option to get signed up on a random general-interest server.

John Mark :blobcatverified: ☑️

@isaac32767 @Gargron yes - I think a good ux is for new registrants to get assigned a random instance. Take the guesswork away for people not yet accustomed to mastodon. They can always move later if they want

Jeff Sonstein

@Gargron very good to see “All servers listed here have committed to the Mastodon Server Covenant.“ +100

Linda ❤️

@Gargron Thanks—looking forward to navigating

Matt Karolian

@Gargron great news! Trying to launch a server by mid-week 🤞

Tara 🕷️ :butterfly_trans:🌹

@Gargron is there a reason some servers have been removed? (e.g. i originally discovered tech.lgbt on that page, and it's no longer there!)

Jote 🏳️‍🌈 :verified_gay:

@tarajdactyl @Gargron Guessing they requested to be removed due to increased load of new accounts.

xawibo

@Gargron It's good to have someone who actually cares running the place. <3

@Gargron you getting any sleep? thank you & stay healthy!🙏

@Gargron
They aren't terribly popular over here yet, but any chance you can add a 'sports' category for instances, the only one I've seen so far is allpro.social, but I've seen a lot of people on the bird site requesting that category

Tafkak

@Gargron Would it be possible to add the ability to add content warnings for posts you boost? I’d like to be kind to the people who follow me, while still being an activist for critical, sometimes stressful, issues.

Jos Bell

@Gargron the thing I find most frustrating with Mastodon is needing to know the full 'address' of someone in order to find them to follow when all Mastodon addresses are so different..I've tried and failed to find lots of people today who I know are on here. Frustrating!!

Dodgethequeue

@Gargron is there an ability to get the top trending hashtags on the entire fediverse? It’s one of those things to that makes you feel that you are not silo’d off

David Hooper

@Gargron I'm curious what the top factor for choosing a server is. Any thoughts on this?

Nick Felker, 🗽🇺🇦🇹🇼

@Gargron I applaud your efforts to move quickly here. One thing that confused me at first was seeing a long list of servers and not knowing which to choose.

I realize that it doesn't entirely matter, but the current documentation could make choosing feel less existential.

[DATA EXPUNGED]
Nick Felker, 🗽🇺🇦🇹🇼

@strizhechenko @Gargron Understanding what aspects matter and which could be clarified.

Over time network effects should help make the local timeline less necessary, as long as the onboarding is solid.

weems

@Gargron Yeah it was confusing me looking at it where you could not limit the results by sites with open invites.

Raito Bezarius

@Gargron How to reference a server on this page?

Simon Willison

@Gargron would it be possible to show the list of servers that have been blocked by a server on there? Might help people pick servers that are being actively moderated

Grant 🇺🇦ArmUkraine🇺🇦

@Gargron It's looking great over there. A load more tooter friendly :)

Roh Ash

@Gargron do you have help or are you doing this all by yourself?

Markus

@Gargron thank you for your continuous efforts and support for the community. Much love.

slackleberry

@Gargron
Biggest points of friction for me that make it a non-starter to recommend to non-tech friends:
1) the requirement to pick a server up front. I found myself wishing google would host an instance just to avoid having to think about this before I'd had a chance to even see what it is.
2) Server links go straight to sign up pages, instead of a browse page for a peek at what is actively being talked about there

DELETED

@Gargron That was a very usfeul change! thank you Eugen

J. Guti 🦥

@Gargron Appreciate what you've built here and all the work that goes into it, so a huge thank you first. Secondly, looks like a couple of friends tried to join mastodon.online but never received confirmation emails even after trying the re-send link. Should that be automatic or is there a waiting period or queue for new signups there? (TY again!)

Eugen Rochko

@jhonygutierrez I'm running into a daily e-mail sending limit with our provider. I've raised a ticket to increase the limit.

J. Guti 🦥

@Gargron 🙏🏼 ah, that makes sense! Thanks so much the quick response. I'll let them know to stay tuned!

Maarten den Braber

@Gargron good changes, but maybe the idea to find a *server* should actually be more focused on the idea of "Find your community?"

Ignis Incendio :autism:

@Gargron May I ask what’s the reasoning/feedback of removing the total user count from the list? Thank you for your hard work!

Eugen Rochko

@IgnisIncendio It was misinterpreted as a signal that servers are silos, and people gravitated towards the largest ones on that merit.

Ignis Incendio :autism:

@Gargron Ah, and here I was worrying how I’d guide my friend to small servers without the total user count :P my UX intuition was way off. That makes more sense.

Aras Pranckevičius

@Gargron How does one submit a server to show up on the list? I got a bunch of requests to "make" mastodon.gamedev.place show up there, but I've no idea how :)

DELETED

@Gargron will there be cross-server membership? What happens if the server I signed up for goes down (permanently or temporarily?) Would I have to sign up for a new server and start fresh?

Jessica Manor

@Gargron it’s pretty impressive thus far. For the influx and the development scramble. Very impressed at the back end. 👏👏👏

PeppermintPatty

@Gargron Thank you for your dedication and the excellent job you‘re doing. 🙏🏻
I‘m just wondering: Did you work through the night? 🤔😯

Toad King

@Gargron I feel like putting more focus on general instances over interest-based ones will help most new users.

Brendan Jones

@Gargron great changes.

Are there any private companies running instances? Because I wouldn't put them under the 'public organization' legal structure, I'd only put non-profits there.

Legal structure dropdown
Edward T Hall III

@Gargron co founded Occupy Wall St - background in behavioral economics and research - ethical user engagement .. love to be in touch on bringing Mastdaon into public awareness and use

Caleb McKean

@Gargron I think its weird you dont have a like button

Jeff Eckman

@Gargron awesome work. Excited about the days and weeks and months ahead!

iluXan 🤣

@Gargron would you please consider adding categories for writing/authors and science/science communication. I’ve seen multiple instances for both

th3lucas

@Gargron there are some servers (like mastodon.social) that use multiple languages in the community. Maybe a "Multilingual" option would be good. 😄

Mister Bim

@Gargron
Thanks! Seems that #UX is preventibg dôme folks to join.
@cquest

D. Elisabeth Glassco

@Gargron Thanks for responding to feedback. For the technology challenged, it could still be more user friendly. Great work.

Danger Bay

@Gargron I don't see msstodon.social on there if they are full or nit accepting users does it dissappear from that list. Also a search function would be good instead if scrolling. (Unless I'm missing something)

Sergio

@Gargron so in your changes, did you make changes to the federated feed? When I go to it now it is empty.

rolenthedeep

@Gargron removing the user count is a very good thing. The FOMO psychology is real, but you truly don't miss out on anything because of federation. I think this will really help

Anne Ursu

@Gargron you're doing wonderful work. Thank you.

Fai Tosuratana

@Gargron @admin mastodon.in.th doesn't show up in Asia server?

You all are doing God’s work. Thank you for the current safe space. Hope it remains this way for the duration.

WilliamsStrangeFest

@Gargron The past couple days I have not been unable use my federated or local feeds, I'm not too computer smart but is this just temporary or do I have to start a new channel? Find another server?

SÉQUOYA MAISON BLACQUE

@Gargron how do I change my community/handle to mstdn??

SÉQUOYA MAISON BLACQUE

@Gargron how do I change community/handle from @Glasgow to @mstdn ?? perhaps I should have watched a video before I got started! 🤗

@Gargron just trying to find where the "Signup reason" text prompt lives so I can add some instructions to make manual review go more smoothly XD

join is looking fantastic!

@Gargron
Hi Eugen, Amazing work building and scaling so fast.

Do you know how we can get the med-mastodon.com instance listed on your awesome joinmastodon list of servers page?

Thx in advance
- a bunch of confused doctors

Sunny

@Gargron Awesome. Letting people filter is good. So are explanatory notes. Non-tech people can understand servers and decentralization enough to sign up and use mastodon.(I saw comments on another platform suggesting otherwise.) They just need the type of things you described here.

masatenas

@Gargron

I suspect that having to choose an instance is still preventing many people from joining.

What about allowing a simplified sign-up procedure for beginners that do not care about instances?

Something like allowing to create an account on a random general server would simplify the process for beginners.

Chris

@Gargron Made my sign up simple and easy, great work on the filters- very clear!
