@Gargron Do you, by any chance, have an overview of currently in use machine types and their roles? as a DevOp I am curious about the setup. Had to figure due to high traffic, expect some high donations in the coming months. Congrats on the site boost. I feel this server base of a Twitter-like setup is perfect for mutuals to stay connected but also mingle with new faces @Gargron Thank you! It actually seems like the entire mastodon.social server is pretty sluggish again today (I know you just upgraded it a few days ago, and I assume you're scrambling to beef up bandwidth/etc even more now). Beyond switching to a different instance or signing up for your patreon to help fund further upgrades (which I did the other day), is there anything else we can do? @Gargron Thank you for your hard work, really appreciated. Do you start to see a limit for scaling mastodon in term of hardware usage vs user count or for now its still working (as long as hardware is available)? @Gargron What kind of user base size are you looking at on that server? Plus, should it ever been automatically imposed, that no new users can sign up to a server after a certain threshold reached? To avoid a single server being too dominant? Also, user accounts on servers, auto delete themselves after a time to free up space? @Gargron thanks Eugen. It feels like old Fido-Net times in the late 80s. Thanks for all your work @Gargron Great, though I'm getting a Network Error failure on every toot I tap on in the web app, regardless of what instance it's on. It's a problem when I want to read a thread. @Gargron the way things are going, pretty much every instance host will need their own rack somewhere. It's a problem, but it could be worse. @Gargron I would migrate off to a less populous instance but it would be a bit sad to lose my early posts (granted they're mostly tiny anyway). What's the technical limitation that stops them from being movable? @Gargron Is there a patreon for the mastodon.social instance or some other way to contribute? @Gargron excellent. On a different note, replies are taking a long time to load for me. Is this something known about? (On iOS app, if that helps) @Gargron I've noticed that tapping on post hashtags just causes a timeout for me here on mastodon.social. I've tried other accounts on other instances and have had better luck - assuming this is because we're in one of the largest and more OG of instances, but just wanted to let you know via a lowly user's experience such as my own. @Gargron Former network guy here: what loadbalancers are in use? I'm simply curious. I'm working with Azure now in regards to cybersecurity. @Gargron Thanks! for everything! These are exciting days for us newbies but they must really stress you out! @Gargron hello Eugen I have sent you a DM message from my other account, please read my message. Regards @Gargron Thx, as a newcomer and techie I appreciate the effort and can imagine how great and demanding these days are for you. @Gargron mastodon.online is also having trouble. I've been struggling with trying to upload a gif for over an hour. @Gargron when I add a photo or video to a new post, the Publish button no longer functions. Maybe I’m missing an obvious step? @Gargron Just wanted to add my voice to all those thanking you for all the hard work and long hours you've put in since this started. @Gargron thanks for being a welcoming port for those of us washed out in the Twitter storm. We owe you! @Gargron great work! It's been more and more smooth throughout the day :apartyblobcat: @Gargron my claim to fame is breaking a load balancer once when doing volume tests on SSL transactions. Took a website out briefly that shared the load balancer, got lots of questions! Some new user feedback: When setting yourself up as a new user, can you have an automatic server selection as the default (which maybe chooses the fastest server response time) & an advanced setting which allows you to choose your own server. As you say, it really doesn't matter which server you choose so why make it the first question a new user is faced with? Most people have no idea what to choose... @Gargron Here in mastodon.online things went better with uploading. Now the problem is that the server is not connected with federal/local posts. @Gargron sadly not for me but I’m sure they will eventually and then you all can meet #pocketdog @Gargron Thank you very much. That new Twitter CEO must really be scaring people over there. @Gargron how can we help support the node and your work best? Running our own nodes to spread the load or donating to help pay for upgrades? @Gargron thanks so much, must be super exciting days for you right about now! @Gargron Very curious to hear about mastodon.social's backend and how it's dealing with the sudden influx of users. |
@Gargron thank you!!
