From 8 cores to 36 cores processing power, let's see how the new database server holds up. Hopefully everything will be much faster from now on, but it should also give me a bit more room to scale horizontally.

@Gargron woo hoo! Many thanks for building this platform. I wish I understood how it works earlier! But as they say, better late than never! @Gargron Monstrous. (In any case, seriously considering setting up an instance for me and a small community to ease the load here.) #fediverse #federation @Gargron Tens é de trazer mais gajas pra cá. Isto anda muito fraco em termos de gajas. E depois dá um jeito nas DMs, porque eu não quero ver pilas no feed, ok? Vá, um abraço e boa continuação. @Gargron 👌 😍 👏 @Gargron Also most DB engines really need a sh*t-ton of RAM. If the DB has to go to disk - even SSD - you’re in a world of pain. Biggest challenge is to balance RAM / CPU. Sometimes need to tweak OS VM paging parms as well. A good DB does its own paging, as these workloads differ greatly from regular processes. @Gargron Thank You and all die other admins of the #fediverse, for all the Things you all do for FLOSS, decentralisation/federalisation and our resulting steady growing ability to get rid of dependencies from big business and the super rich, as well as governments and well funded power seeking special interest groups! @Gargron I assume it's active, 'cause everything feels really speedy again... (Thanks so much for all you do - and, get some rest!) @Gargron I very much hope, you can sleep now at least for a couple of hours. Amazing engagement. Chappeau! @Gargron Thanks a lot! What is surprising to me is that it was working on just 8 cores before... Wow! @Gargron Yes, it is much much better! And it was absolutely necessary. I almost quit because of it. Great step forwards. Thanks. @Gargron Thank you 😊 Is there any way we can support you more directly than via https://www.patreon.com/mastodon ? @Gargron what a difference! ⚡️your work is much appreciated 🙏 I hope your stress levels can go like 📉 now! @Gargron This is awesome! Thanks for adjusting so quickly to the influx of users. @Gargron Thank you. Once you recover a bit let us know what can be done to help besides financial donations. @Gargron as soon as I saw this, the app became much more responsive. Thank you for what you do!! @Gargron Big improvement in response times. Again, thanks for all your hard work in the past week. 🙏 @Gargron Happy to hear the update has arrived! Thanks for all the effort you have (and are) putting in. Thanks! @Gargron it's good . Put an option to move to federal from community toots, and auto translate to mastodon App in Google play @Gargron really feeling improvement when communicating from other instances. Great job ! @Gargron in my experience running databases, RAM can make an even bigger difference, or faster drives, depending on the database. Should look for telemetry were the blocks are. Fingers crossed! I can also see that some people have moved to smaller instances (me included) to take away a bit of the load (at least that was my reason, can’t speak for others). You tripled your users in a mere four days, that’s a lot to take care of. |
@Gargron it is working!!! Thanks Eugen 🥳
