 My daughter is trying to convince me that the phrase "social butterfly" implies the existence of a "social caterpiller", which justifies her wrapping herself in a quilt, her "social cocoon", and refusing to get up today. I have to admit it's a pretty good argument. Solid wordplay, reasonable-sounding if ridiculous conclusions, ticks all the boxes. Kinda dad-proud right now, gotta say. When someone says that they just can't quit Twitter, what I hear is, "I am comfortable in a room full of nazis," and I will remember that about them.

@fraying And not even just being *comfortable* in the room with nazis, but comfortable with them having access to every fucking post and interaction they have on the platform.  Actually, Twitter isn't just a room full of nazis. It's a room full of nazis in a building owned by a nazi who is currently working to get a nazi dictator elected, where your participation helps the nazi cause. So, yeah. Gonna remember that.  Fun fact, people who don't understand English see about as many nazis on Twitter as anywhere else, i.e., small groups which are easily blocked. The general public doesn’t adopt digital technologies. It adopts products. People don’t use TCP/IP and HTTP. They browse websites on the web with a browser. They don’t use SMTP and IMAP. They send and receive emails. One of the toughest challenges of our time is to develop appealing products and open standards simultaneously. Those are primarily not technical but social and political problems.

@thibaultamartin It’s amazing how hard this message is to spread. It’s as if the people who make things don’t interact with potential customers! 😏  @thibaultamartin "there's no demand for IPv6". Of course not. Only 0.001% of folk *should* care about IP protocol types. What people and organisations want is that their apps and services work, which means upgrading the legacy Internet to something that works with the quantities we face today, at the qualities demanded.  I could do without the people who make me feel old by mentioning how old comics are...  I went through my sticker box and picked out the hexagonal NGI ones. These are some of the projects that risk reduced to no funding when EU decides to put tax money into AI projects instead.  I decided to bite the bullet last night: try to learn how to take photos of the #Aurora So I had to finally learn how to make real manual settings (Aperture should be this-okay, how do I set aperture? shutterspeed should be--okay, how do I set that? lol)...lol.. in the end I still have more to learn (about the camera and also tripod use!) . The photos I got are not 'good'- I'd like them sharper- a balance between slow shutter speeds that let in more light, and faster to catch the movement. @tefferbear There's a flashing neon sign in my head that says Laika Studios. When she's older, finances permitting, she may want to consider the Emily Carr University of Art + Design here in Vancouver, or Sheridan College in Brampton, ON. I can guarantee they'd let her in if these were in her portfolio. Or, if it turns out there's something else she's interested in studying, or doesn't want to study at all, stop-motion can be something she does just for enjoyment. ☺️  #TIL by putting sheep wool around your plants in the garden you can protect them against both slugs and droughts! So useful! @Natanox I had so much success this year using wool pellets to protect plants… dahlias and squashes particularly. I’m a convert |
