Happy 10th Anniversary to this absolute legend, Wondermark #1062; The Terrible Sea Lion

Wondermark by David Malki summon up wondermark.com

A six-panel strip, in black & white.
1st panel: Man and woman riding in some kind of old automobile.
Woman: I don't mind most marine mammals. But SEA LIONS? I could do without sea lions.
Man: Don't say that out loud!

2nd panel: Same scene, but zoomed out. We now see a large sea lion has pulled up behind them. It's not anthropomorphized. It looks like a regular sea lion
Sea Lion: Pardon me, I couldn't help but overhear...
Man: NOW you've done it

3rd panel: same scene, but only showing the sea lion and the woman's annoyed face
Sea Lion: I would like to have a civil conversation about your statement. Would you mind showing me evidence of any negative thing any sea lion has ever done to you?

4th panel: Man and woman at a table, indoors. The sea lion is behind them.
Woman: GO AWAY
Sea Lion: There's no need to raise your voice, I'm right here. I'm just curious if you have any sources to back up your opinion?

5th panel: Woman is in bed, frustrated. Sea lion is beside her bed.
Woman: You're IN my HOUSE
Sea Lion: You made a statement in public for all to hear. Are you unable to defend the statements you make? Or simply unwilling to have a reasoned discussion?

6th panel: Man and woman at the table. Sea lion is behind them again.
Man: TOLD you, dude. SEA LIONS.
Sea Lion: I have been unfailingly polite, and YOU two have been nothing but RUDE.
Woman: I AM TRYING TO EAT BREAKFAST
Sea Lion: Very well. We shall resume in an hour

@EdCates I forgot that the comic is actually about a sea lion defending their right to exist.

Look, be reasonable.

If sea lions were considerate of others, they would not grow so much blubber, have fine fur and be so slow on land.
They would totally not let their kids get clubbed if they had proper nuclear families!

Their inconsiderate "feelings" impact others right to oil, furs and ability to dispose of toxins far away from humans.

@EdCates I'm old enough to remember when Jessie Singal or Freedie deBoer argued that the sea lion was the good guy in that comic.

@socprof @EdCates

I get why sealioning is bad, but in the context of the comic it seems like an autist trying to get an apology.

@EdCates see also “I’m just asking questions!” a.k.a. JAQoffs

A Slightly Orange Cat

@EdCates I just encountered one of these in a reply today. Muted it.

bamfic

@EdCates my god, it's been a decade already, and the problem has not gotten any better

Stygian Lizard

@EdCates Has it only been 10 years? I would've guessed 20 for as long as the phenomenon has been around.

James Trickle uP

@shadyspotlight @EdCates Back in the late '80's there were sealions on USENET...

Stygian Lizard

@opalmirror @EdCates I would image so! I was like 7 at the time and we didn't have a computer, so I'll take your word on Usenet, because people have been awful forever. I was referring to the comic itself being only 10, but time is meaningless and both creeps and flashes by.

James Trickle uP

@shadyspotlight @EdCates We didn't call them sea lions at that time... The sea lion comic perfectly explained the problem of these exhaustive trolls though and the name stuck.... definitely moved online life forward by naming the behavior.

@EdCates

A brilliant explainer, wonderfully illustrated.

@EdCates I don't get it, where is this taking place, on Twitter? In DMs? I'm not popular nor a woman so people usually don't care what I write :)

Marsh Ray

@EdCates The perfect all-purpose response to anyone objecting to one’s expression of bigotry.

F4GRX Sébastien

@EdCates i've already crossed several sea lions on twitter. Not so much in here.

@pavsmith @EdCates Im just trying to enjoy a succulent Chinese meal over here.

@EdCates so THAT's what sea lion meant! Jesus, we sometimes use such obscure references...

schratze

@EdCates the sealion was right.

Everyone who did sealioning after this comic came out is an asshole.

goedelchen

@schratze @EdCates For people, who make public statements out of thin air, sea lions are for sure annoying. On the other hand, with people, whose statement are founded in something, the comic ends before the second row.

Maybe the sealion in the comic is an asshole, but the other guy is a much bigger one.

Edit: typo

@EdCates

I could do without the people who make me feel old by mentioning how old comics are...

Ed the Elf

@theogrin Aw, it's not like I posted about the 30th anniversary of Green Day's "Dookie" being released or anything.

gnate

@EdCates
Who knew it would all be downhill from "Dookie"?
@theogrin

Erik Ableson

@EdCates @siracusa Pardon, what? 10 years? I’ll just go pick out my headstone now
