Enough, already: why humanity must get on board with the concept of ‘sufficiency’

Kudra :maybe_verified:

Of all the reasons to endorse Universal Basic Income, mental wellbeing is often overlooked. Imagine fewer people acting out of desperation and frustration. UBI has the power to alleviate stress and foster a more compassionate society. Turn down the suffering, turn up the empathy.

@scottsantens I learned something horrible this election cycle -- that some conservatives are willing to block or approve things with no regard how it hurts themselves, as long as it hurts *others* more. Their goal is to always make sure someone is below them.

From this perspective it seems unlikely that such a thing would easily pass in the US because it blurs the lines of the imagined classes. Seems like yet another reason to add to the list of "why we can't have nice things"...

Nazo

@scottsantens This is no joke. Imagine how many potential Einsteins out there never we lost. Among all the various "Einstein worked in the patent office" and etc comments, we often forget he was actually fairly well to-do and had the freedom to choose the job that suited what he wanted (a boring simple job that let him think about other things while he worked.)

How many cures for cancer have been lost because the person who would have invented them works crap jobs and then collapses at night?

Dusty Burwell

@scottsantens imagine if the people who end up in jail today for petty theft costing tax payers millions instead had enough basic income to eat and be sheltered costing mere thousands.

Our stopped clock technology is still in its infancy, but it's already reached an accuracy rate of two or more times per day, and there's no reason for us to believe that won't improve dramatically in the future

@joe well i've heard enough. time to replace all the old clocks we use with these new ones

one question though, is the smell of the earth burning coming from the stopped clocks or what?

Time for a massive rant.

I've been doing cat sitting now "professionally" for almost a year, after sitting for several friends over the previous year and a half, and owning two cats in the past. I'd like to think I'm professional (not perfect mind, and I have 3 year old) and try to send pics of the cat/s with regular updates, follow instructions, and leave the house in similar or better condition than I find it.

We just finished a week long sit on Saturday, during which there was a known issue with the heating that I hadn't been told in advance how to fix, & which happened twice so clearly was a regular occurrence, and the internet stopped working the first time the heating stopped working and they had no way to troubleshoot it remotely, apparently. House didn't have a clothes dryer or a functional clothes line. It wasn't the most convenient house to sit, but not the worst either.

But what completely floored me was that they did not send one message to confirm their cat was fine on return, or to thank me, or anything. I sent three texts checking in over 3 days, with zero response. Thinking maybe there was something wrong with their phone (even though I was getting the equivalent of read receipts) I sent an email yesterday asking if they'd got the texts: no response. This morning I begin panicking that perhaps they arrived home to a dead cat, or no cat, that I somehow didn't lock the door behind me properly or that I might have somehow mortally offended them or done something else horribly wrong.

I start stressing about the above possibilities seriously this morning, it's horribly distracting, I'm seriously worried their cat might be dead... Get home and finally send another text, this time basically begging them to please tell me if something has happened.

I get a terse response back in 5 minutes saying cat is fine, they've just been very busy since getting back.

Yeah, you hoped I might be free to sit in November as well?

No fucking way in hell, lady.

I do this largely because it's really a good feeling to be appreciated for caring for someone's beloved pets, and I do really care about the welfare of the cats I sit for. If you can't take one minute to acknowledge that role as being valuable and put my mind at ease once you've returned and found everything in order, then I definitely don't want to be performing that service again for you.

@kudra Devils advocate mode engaged...

They might have been in hospital or something? People can get busy enough to not reply to every message they receive... I know, I've been there, it sucks, you feel guilty about it too, then that guilt turns into anxiety when people push you for a response..

I'm certainly guilty of missing messages for days and not replying for weeks...

Following up was the right thing to do none the less..

Later today Britain’s last remaining coal-fired power station will shut down, bringing to a close 142 years of power generation that began when the world’s first coal-fired power station, at 57 Holborn Viaduct in London, started operation on 12th January 1882.

When I created grid.iamkate.com in 2012, coal accounted for 40% of Britain’s power generation. It was overtaken by gas in 2015, nuclear and wind in 2016, and solar in 2019. As I write this, wind is producing 40% of Britain’s power.

Every time government leaders get a raise, minimum wage should be raised by the same percentage.

Every time a CEO gets a raise, including bonuses, all workers should get their pay increased by the same percentage.

If they need raises in their living wage, it only goes to follow that everyone else does as well.

@patrickhadfield @CStamp IN the US government, there's something called cost of living adjustment. It's not a raise, exactly, but if something like that could happen for companies, that'd be cool.

Cabbidges

@CStamp I'd go with benefits get a raise, that would stall the horse.

gadgetoid

@CStamp I'm definitely more a "government leaders should be housed in grey twenty story utilitarian domiciles and forced to engage with all public services" guy, but I'll take the raise if I can get it. You'd think all the corruption and self-serving policymaking would be compensation enough in itself.

Here's a way to turn anti-AI rage into action:

Normalize crediting.

I can't tell you how many times an invite, email, blog post, random bit of social media content goes out with some kind of unattributed lovely art.

CREDIT ARTISTS. ON EVERYTHING. It's easy. And if we normalized crediting enough, the generated images would stand out on their own for absence of credit.

@edk Also, when i see music albums on bandcamp or other sites that are obviously using AI cover art, i pass. There are plenty of other fish in the sea.

Xeno the CaveSpider 🕷

@edk how do you think should I handle this as a content creator?

It feels absurdly redundant ending all my toots in something like "pics by me", especially when it's more than obvious, because most of my toots consist of myself showing off some newly built thing.

Sure would I attribute media from others, but IIRC this never happend once at this account ^^

Or should I just drop the line into my bio?

HoldMyType

@edk agree but doesn't ai train search engines to curb child porn ?
is that bigtech blackmailing

SF Bay has some of the highest levels of #microplastics in the world -- and that's why we're going after #Exxon to stop plastic pollution at the source.

Big thanks to our coalition partners at Heal the Bay, Sierra Club, Surfrider, and Cotchett, Pitre & McCarthy, and to AG Bonta for filing a similar lawsuit.

@timsmalley @nblr if I'm having a bad day, I go and find a big tree to look at. It's been there long before I was born. In the natural state of things, it will be there long after me. It doesn't care about my problems, it just sits there and breathes sunlight. It makes my problems seem insignificant. Also it's pretty.
