Of all the reasons to endorse Universal Basic Income, mental wellbeing is often overlooked. Imagine fewer people acting out of desperation and frustration. UBI has the power to alleviate stress and foster a more compassionate society. Turn down the suffering, turn up the empathy.

 @scottsantens I learned something horrible this election cycle -- that some conservatives are willing to block or approve things with no regard how it hurts themselves, as long as it hurts *others* more. Their goal is to always make sure someone is below them. From this perspective it seems unlikely that such a thing would easily pass in the US because it blurs the lines of the imagined classes. Seems like yet another reason to add to the list of "why we can't have nice things"...  @scottsantens This is no joke. Imagine how many potential Einsteins out there never we lost. Among all the various "Einstein worked in the patent office" and etc comments, we often forget he was actually fairly well to-do and had the freedom to choose the job that suited what he wanted (a boring simple job that let him think about other things while he worked.) How many cures for cancer have been lost because the person who would have invented them works crap jobs and then collapses at night? @scottsantens imagine if the people who end up in jail today for petty theft costing tax payers millions instead had enough basic income to eat and be sheltered costing mere thousands. @CoyoteTraveller du you have more (sign obsessed Autistic puppygirl is begging to be fed Our stopped clock technology is still in its infancy, but it's already reached an accuracy rate of two or more times per day, and there's no reason for us to believe that won't improve dramatically in the future

  @kudra Devils advocate mode engaged... They might have been in hospital or something? People can get busy enough to not reply to every message they receive... I know, I've been there, it sucks, you feel guilty about it too, then that guilt turns into anxiety when people push you for a response.. I'm certainly guilty of missing messages for days and not replying for weeks... Following up was the right thing to do none the less.. It's so annoying when climate protestors block roads isn't it? When I created https://grid.iamkate.com in 2012, coal accounted for 40% of Britain’s power generation. It was overtaken by gas in 2015, nuclear and wind in 2016, and solar in 2019. As I write this, wind is producing 40% of Britain’s power.

And here we are ... Every time government leaders get a raise, minimum wage should be raised by the same percentage. Every time a CEO gets a raise, including bonuses, all workers should get their pay increased by the same percentage. If they need raises in their living wage, it only goes to follow that everyone else does as well.

Here's a way to turn anti-AI rage into action: Normalize crediting. I can't tell you how many times an invite, email, blog post, random bit of social media content goes out with some kind of unattributed lovely art. CREDIT ARTISTS. ON EVERYTHING. It's easy. And if we normalized crediting enough, the generated images would stand out on their own for absence of credit.

@edk Also, when i see music albums on bandcamp or other sites that are obviously using AI cover art, i pass. There are plenty of other fish in the sea. @edk how do you think should I handle this as a content creator? It feels absurdly redundant ending all my toots in something like "pics by me", especially when it's more than obvious, because most of my toots consist of myself showing off some newly built thing.  @timsmalley @nblr if I'm having a bad day, I go and find a big tree to look at. It's been there long before I was born. In the natural state of things, it will be there long after me. It doesn't care about my problems, it just sits there and breathes sunlight. It makes my problems seem insignificant. Also it's pretty.   @hugh Oh, what the supercomputers in our pockets could do if the main purpose of the software wasn't to addict us and track every blink we make. Would you buy a Tesla in 2024?
