Ha, well, 280 people have spoken... Ioniq 5 it is. How does everyone like their Ioniq 5? I've seen nothing but good reviews and my brief test drive was infectious. It was either the Model Y or Ioniq 5, and this seems to have made my choice. @chad Technology Connections levied a complaint aimed at the ioniq regarding brake lights and how they operate, or don't, in limited circumstances, but other than that I've no information good or bad. I'd probably go Ioniq over Tesla. I don't want to give Elon Musk money if I can avoid it. @ikeacurtains saw the video from @TechConnectify and I agree to some extent but the brake lights are compliant to regulations. My concern is if I can tow our tent trailer safely and if it will get us to Calgary without charging. Self driving was a nice to have. @chad @ikeacurtains @TechConnectify well the good news is that self driving does not really exist, so you're not missing anything π @chad @ikeacurtains FYI they've updated the cars and fixed that issue. I didn't make a follow-up video but I pinned a comment about that on the original one @chad Check out The Ioniq Guy. Has great info on the vehicle. I love my Ioniq 5. And finally, the 2025 now has a rear windshield wiper. @chad π If you can afford to spend a little more ... and want to have fun - check out videos on the Ioniq 5 N. Here is a link to a review from Throttle House. @chad Me too! I just have fun watching the videos! I hope Hyundai can add the sounds via a software update to my car. @displacedcanuck Honestly, I don't care for the sounds. I want it to be as quiet as possible while offering notice to pedestrians. @chad That is a challenge for EVs - pedestrians don't hear the vehicle - especially if they are focused on a smartphone (as many are today). USA does have legislation on sound levels at low speeds. I will say the Ioniq 5 is very quiet while driving. You can hear a sound when accelerating, but if music is playing - you cannot hear the electric motors at all. Highway driving is very comfortable - and the interior is very roomy. I find myself wishing I had a courtesy bell, or similar warning sound, when driving slowly near pedestrians on residential streets (esp. with no sidewalks). But I have a bell on my bicycle. People on foot seem to consider it rude, even on shared trails. Esp. if you interrupt their device interaction. Many people resent having to share space, regardless how they are traveling. @brent @displacedcanuck @chad this pedestrian is truly grateful when cyclists use their bells! It only startles me when someone waits until they are a few feet away from me before they ring. You're not hearing, but there are external speakers announcing the car's presence. Hyundai calls its own sound as Digital Angels IIRC. Every EV sold in EU and US must have this feature. Just because you don't hear internally, it doesn't mean it's not present externally. @chad @chad spanish car maker Cupra is arriving Canada, you have several amazing EVs https://www.cupraofficial.com/cars/tavascan @chad The spouse is waiting for a 2025. He did extensive research and that's the one he landed on. We sat in one recently, and loved it. @chad I'd probably wait for the 2025s later this year since the supercharger network is way bigger. Unless you know you're doing a lot of road trips along a corridor with EA chargers or NEVI funding. @MisterMadge is being able to charge at Tesla superchargers without a NACS adapter really a big deal? @chad Absolutely love mine. The matte finishes require a little more care though, so be warned. @rightsprung I'm infinitely disappointed that GM abandoned the Volt platform. It was tried tested and true. I'm from a pure GM family and I don't know if I would buy a GM EV on the new platform yet. @Z_Zed_Zed @rightsprung fantastic platform and I'm sad that GM abandoned it. If they hadn't I might consider their product. @chad can you even get aftermarket parts for them or do you have to rely on that mental case keeping his business going to keep your car running? @maggiejk that is why I'm not interested. I have rebuilt engines. I'm expecting to rebuild a battery pack. Tesla gikes me no confidence I'll be able to repair it. Then again my regular car sits with the battery disconnected because I drive it so little to I'm not likely to buy a car anytime soon. @acidbong for sure. The poll however is looking at folks that might have the potential to buy a new car today as I'm in the position that we are growing out of my beloved 2015 Honda Accord Coupe. @chad There was never a time when I would've bought one. In 2024, I wouldn't take one for free @chad I bought a Tesla Model 3 in 2018 before I realized Musk was a dangerous insane fucker. It has been a great car. But I will never buy anything that is related to Musk ever again. And canβt wait until I can afford to get rid of the Tesla @rberger I feel like if I was to buy a Tesla today I'd need to put a "I don't support Elon" bumper sticker on it. @chad@mstdn.ca I voted "No" but only because there wasn't a "HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA! No." option. @chad once again, poll on this site confirm that the people on this site are a very very very non representative group @nlupo at some point we're going to look at vehicles and EVs won't be a luxury. I look forward to that day. @chad My partner and I have both a Tesla 3 and an Ioniq 5. I like them both, for different reasons. The Ioniq is more practical, but the 3 is more maneuverable and responsive. The Tesla software is mostly better, esp the self-driving features. But I like the dedicated instrument panel and many other features of the Ioniq 5. You should test drive both. @brent thanks. Have you towed with either? We have a 1200lb tent trailer that we need to make sure we can still bring along. @chad No, sorry, no tow hitches. I don't own a trailer. I would guess the Ioniq is far better for towing than our single-motor 3, but maybe a dual motor Y would be comparable? @brent Thanks. Dollar to dollar, comparing the two vehicles as equipped, I think we're going with the Ioniq 5. @chad Question is whether you can find the one you want, or have to wait a long time. I got lucky and local dealer had the exact colour/package I wanted on the lot. Some people have to wait a year. @brent there's an Ioniq 5 that fits the bill at a dealer I am willing to do business with. (ie, not part of Auto Canada or Go Auto) @chad Also, the Ioniq still uses a fob. The tesla phone key is so much better. Transparent locking and unlocking of the car. Also sentry mode. @brent I'm not so concerned about access. I'm more concerned about if it can do what we need it to. Specifically if we can town a tent trailer 200-300km. We also need that hitch to be able to bring our bikes with us when we vacation. Critically when we got to Victoria in February. @chad For that kind of stuff the Ioniq 5 is clearly superior. Much better for long distance driving, as long as you have chargers en route. We drove the 3 from Niagara to Sault Ste. Marie and back, charging was no problem, but I think the Ioniq would have been more comfy. @chad Full disclosure: Of course I checked "No," but the truth is I've never learned to drive and have said publicly that I would rather be killed than own a car, so... Nope. I never liked the centre screen for all controls thing. And I want some sort of instrument cluster in front of my face, not off to the side. In no particular order, I'd get one of these: ID4, Mach-E, Ioniq5 or EV6. They each have their strong points and weaknesses, but have generally been pretty capable. @chad I own a BMW i3. It has been a flawless car except for limited range. I'm actually looking for a newer i3 with the bigger battery to replace it. @markoo comparing a full spec'd Model Y to a full spec'd Ioniq 5, it's about a CAD$20k difference. @chad I was considering a Tesla before Musk's shakedown of the stockholders and authoritarian and racist tirades. Even without that, an electric vehicle still might be difficult to have as an only vehicle as charging is not yet ubiquitous enough for long distance trips to many places. @profdc9 I've considered the charging perspective and knowing that we can travel from one end of Canada to the other on the Trans Canada with level 2 charging, and that I can visit my family in central Alberta and come home without charging, this isn't really a concern. We'd be taking this car on a trip to Victoria from Edmonton in February if I go for it. @chad @chad I live in Brazil where there are Chinese electric cars- big hit, half the price.. @chad I bought a Model 3 in 2019. The main reason was the driving assist features; it gets too nerve wracking to do distance driving otherwise but I don't need/use/like it's city street level navigation. if I had to replace it I'd either restructure my life toward public transit (moving into a city proper) or, assuming another vehicle has decent general lane assistance these days, get a different electric car. An EV Smart Fortwo sized vehicle would have been really nice for my needs. @chad No, but simply because I wouldn't buy any electric vehicle in 2024. I'm not buying one until I can reliably charge it outside of a major city. I also can't afford most electric vehicles. I don't care about politics, so my opinion is not related to Elon doing Elon things. @chad solely due to the poor decision to release a cybertruck and the inevitable failure to provide meaningful affordable and reasonable options for the average, non doomsday petite bourgeoisie.
Can you add a "Hell NO!" option? Kidding, and fascist CEO, aside there are three Tesla owners on my block. Every car has had issues. The issues have been as simple as bad fit and finish and as complex as not being able to start/drive them. My F150 Lightning has been bombproof by comparison and powered my home for 2 days during a power outage. My only complaint on the Lightning is I wish it had more range. I'm waiting for the electric vehicle with a 500 mile range. @chad Tesla is a high profile example of hardware you can purchase, while at the same time have zero control over the asset youβve paid for. Tesla could literally reposess your vehicle and self drive it away. Their design does not facilitate easy repair when in collisions. Products are a profit maximizing business model by a savant social misfit. That being said, most OEMs are going the same way, they are now catching on to Teslaβs lead. @chad I'm a no on Tesla. Would I buy and electric car. @chad Hi, Actually, nowadays, we have to think twice. You know, in Lebanon, pagers and walkie-talkies exploded. May be a Tesla can explode too, who knows π€·, we don't have control over it. @chad Iβm embarrassed to admit I bought a model 3 in 2019. I knew musk was bad but didnβt think he was that much worse than other car companies. I was wrong and would very much try to avoid buying his cars or anything else he schemes up. No doubt other car companies are bad too but not as next level @chad I'm still not ready for any EV because of range. If I was in the market, I would avoid Tesla like the plague... overpriced, purely designed, bad customer service, the owner is a major dick. @chad @chad I have a pre-Twitter model 3, I looked at selling it but it lost 2/3 of its resale value post-Twitter. @chad If I were to buy an electric car, it'd definitely be an Aptera. https://aptera.us/ @chad I'd rather buy the most gas guzzling landboat than an electric pre WW2 Volkswagen @chad Bit of an echo chamber here. I absolutely wouldn't, but I love my 2023 Mustang Mach-E. We only pay $20-$40 per month to charge unless we're driving across the state (US) to see family. @chad I tried to avoid Tesla battery backup for my solar panels, could not find anything else the installers would back, and ended up with a dud system anyway.... @chad it has nothing to do with wanting an electric car. I want a union built electric vehicle from a company not owned by a fascist asshat @chad@mstdn.ca @chad I wouldn't have bought a used car from Nixon, I wouldn't buy a new car from Musk. But in fairness, I wouldn't have bought one in 2016 either, once I found out their "secret battery sauce" was ... just lots of cells. @chad fun fact, I bought a Tesla in 2020, back when they were still cool. It's a good car! ...but now it's like driving around with clown makeup on. 0/10 -- will not buy another. @chad The whole Elon factor aside, we just know too much about their struggling manufacturing quality and marketing lies (battery life, full self driving) to believe that they actually are better vehicles than the competitors. @chad to be honest I bought one last year when Musk was already not that great but this year he has gone even further over the edge and more alternatives have arrived. @chad Anything that Musk is involved in isnβt going to happen for us. Weβre looking at an EV and adding a battery for our solar. Guaranteed no Tesla EV or storage battery for us. It's killing me that I'll likely have to give Sir Shithead Musk money to buy a Starlink for my boat next year. @chad I have to assume there are a few Musk Bros here voting Yes. π @chad I would not buy any car in 2024 or any other year. But if that wasn't true, I still wouldn't buy a Tesla. @chad I never would have bought a Tesla because they're horrible cars. I even raked them over the coals in a design lecture back in 2013. And while that infamous tech bro who claims pride in Tesla didn't create the company, he sure is dragging them down. (He's just an investor, not a creator. He buys his ownership in ideas.) @chad I want to note that while I think Tesla as a brand is poisonous now, I would still buy a (non -Tesla) electric car. I'm afraid that as the most visible electric car they are pulling down the reputation of the technology largely because of Elon. @chad You do know there is no algorithm here accruing clout to your account when you grovel for boosts? @chad absolutely not, their CEOβs behaviour now gives me doubt about any purely electric vehicle and the direction that entire market is going. EVs are not autonomous and PHEVs are the only rational way forward at this point. @chad like it or not, they are still the only internet-connected car company who both demands a warrant *and* will inform the owner before turning over data to law enforcement, so, yeah, if I had the money and was buying an internet- connected car, I'd definitely put that company on my list no matter how much I loathe a certain executive and board member |
@chad not in any year btw
