Stallman's famous retraction, 2019:

Many years ago I posted that I could not see anything wrong about sex between an adult and a child, if the child accepted it.

Through personal conversations in recent years, I’ve learned to understand how sex with a child can harm per psychologically. This changed my mind about the matter: I think adults should not do that. I am grateful for the conversations that enabled me to understand why.

Stallman, June 2024:

Please do not use the word “children” or “child” to refer to anyone under age 18. A 17-year-old is not a child. A 13-year-old is a teenager.

10 September 2024:

I can't understand the fuss about Israeli soldiers who put on the underwear of Gazan women. They meant that as mockery, which is not nice, but mockery is as nothing compared to the atrocities committed against those same women (and almost all of Gaza). Those women (and their families) have been driven from their homes. Some have been killed, and more are being killed. Those soldiers have probably participated in the real atrocities.

@drewdevault fwiw I don't read that as "defending soldiers that are wearing Gazan womens underwear". I read it as people being more outraged about _that_ than the killing and it took me a while to read it otherwise.

@drewdevault yikes. While I hate to admit it, I've made that mistake before:
- Horrible thing X happens.
- We're all upset about X
- Slightly less horrible (still horrible!) thing Y happens. Y is a result of X.
- Everyone's upset about Y
- Me: why are we upset about Y when X is causing it, is even worse, and is still ongoing?
- How people see me: stop being snowflakes about Y, it's not that bad.

Although I only had to make that mistake once, and I was in my teens/early 20s...

@drewdevault Could this be classified as "whataboutism"? He apparently does see that this is "not nice" so I struggle to understand how he fails to understand the issue here, even more so in the face of the war crimes committed.

lmao, whoever just tried to sign me up for a scientology newsletter (presumably in retaliation for my criticisms of RMS?): I admire the effort, but FYI the subscription requires me to confirm it to activate

@drewdevault i had that, they managed to get me on the mailing list for their mad af magazine. It was an hilarious read

Amateurs! Should've registered a new email account, subscribed it to the Hubbard-rhubarb, confirmed it, then set up a rule to forward everything to you.
Easy to block — also not sure making a new email account is as easy these days — now that everything requires a phone number.
Genuinely surprised they require a confirmation though, was fairly certain if you're careless enough to give them an address, they keep sending you printed materials even when you're long dead 😅

Drew DeVault

Some Stallman apologists seem to hold the view that the criticisms of RMS *were* valid, but that he has apologized, acknowledged wrongdoing, and changed his views and his behavior, and therefore deserves forgiveness

I would agree if it weren't for the fact that he has done none of these things -- it's a myth. He has never apologized and he has not meaningfully retracted his views and his problematic behavior has continued post-reinstatement at the FSF.

Drew DeVault

Caveats:
* He has, to the best of my knowledge, made one vague and narrowly scoped apology
* He has changed his opinion on one issue (children consenting to sex), but in a manipulative way that does not account for minors above the age of 13

Meh as a Service

@drewdevault I think it's obvious to everyone he's on the board because of what he achieved in the past, not because of who he is.

It would follow that he should also not be on the board because of what he did in the past, regardless of what he may or may not be.

No one would think of dismissing his actual work because "oh he only did that because he's ND".

It appears the Dutch government has decided to greenlight the EU plan to make 'big tech' force-install software on all European phones that will automatically report any questionable photos in your private chat messages to the police. This is not actually about protecting the children. This is about removing the very possibility of private communications. We can tell because governments have exempted themselves from this legislation (!). Here's something I wrote earlier: berthub.eu/articles/posts/end-

@bert_hubert i think your description is misleading, this is chat control, photo upload scanning, server side, not scan software installed on your phone. Otherwise, link please.

Ianto Jones

@bert_hubert not that things are generally so much better as-is, but goddamnit that's terrifying. Surely there wouldn't be any false positives or any other hijinks associated with this "BUT THINK OF THE CHILDREN" campaign.

The company attempting to sell this bullshit to the Dutch government should be dissolved.

@drewdevault I'm not autistic, but I've been diagnosed with mental illnesses that would certainly classify me as neurodivergent, and with that in mind...

Having mental illnesses, neurodivergence, whatever, does not give you free license to do whatever you want. I completely agree with the peers you cited.

josh susser

@drewdevault This is pretty good, seems to capture the big points well. But a thing to keep in mind is that autistic people are more likely to be victims of abuse than the perpetrators of it, and that includes sexual abuse. In general, autistic people aren't potential threats to be wary of, and the big problem isn't how to keep autistic people from using autism as an excuse for bad behavior. It's far more likely we'll be misunderstood and punished for not being able to play the allistic social game the right way and blamed for things we never did or intended. That doesn't excuse abuse or being an asshole, but it does complicate whether others can correctly recognize it. It also pisses me off that NT folk will write about whether ND folk are problematic, but rarely write about how excluding us is problematic or how to be more inclusive. A lot of this is the DoubleEmpathyProblem, which is probably the most important concept for understanding autism. It's a big deal in the autistic community now, but ironically, most allistic folk have never heard of it. Anyway, good blog post and thanks for reaching out and listening to ND folk.

@drewdevault I deeply appreciate you writing this and your continued writings on your blogs about the way various FOSS groups continue to excuse and encourage bad behavior and worse takes.

As someone "suspected of ASD" and a caretaker to someone diagnosed with ASD (among other things), I'm really, really tired of this hackneyed line of argument that ND somehow grants a license to a pattern of harm.

I've had to conclude this sad defense is from immature worshippers, bad faith actors, or both.

Drew DeVault

Is it problematic if I quip about how easy it was to research this article on the basis that neurodivergent people love to talk about neurodivergence /s

Drew DeVault

"Richard Stallman's problematic behavior, particularly with respect to his views on sexual harassment, sexual assault, and sexualizing minors, are best explained by his (supposed) neurodivergence, and to call for his censure on this basis is discriminatory and ableist"

I've heard this argument (paraphrased) many times. Neurodivergent folks on fedi: can you chime in with your thoughts? Please refrain from replying if you do not have a personal experience with neurodiversity.

@drewdevault
Executive summary: it's bullshit. Ostracise him already.

Longer version: It's simply not true, and it's throwing neurodivergent people under the bus by painting us all as irredeemably sexist/misogynist.

It's also trying to make excuses for him ("look, the poor dear simply can't help it!") and is a short hop from "he's not really racist, he was just drunk/on strong medication."

If there were a clear and well-documented trail of records showing that neurodivergence is strongly associated with such attitudes and/or behaviours, there might be a case for it. I've yet to hear of such evidence, and I'd be deeply suspicious of the methodology used to gather it.

Being autistic hasn't caused me to be a sex-pest any more than getting drunk has ever suddenly made me racist.

No, RMS' problematic behaviour is his own responsibility, and to call for censure on this basis is the correct course of action.
Not just censure of him, but of everybody running interference for him.

Leather Cub Andrew Aû

@drewdevault from my point of view, I do believe that some of that person's nerurodivergence can come into play with that, however, a bigger chunk is most likely associated with upbringing... the whole nature vs nurture thing. I believe that there's interplay and sometimes people need to take the time to unlearn what was erroneously taught to them either through trauma or a harmful authority figure who most likely wasn't neurodivergent.

@drewdevault I'd be very happy to see this happen. I hear a lot of "open source needs to adapt to serve our broken economic model", and I honestly think that we need to start accepting that fixing the economic model is the right approach. Open source struggles because our current society condemns collaboration and cooperating. Instead, it rewards competitiveness and greed.

The project is not particularly well maintained anymore and getting it working is a project in and of itself but once it's up and running and you have it configured properly it works well

I first tried this with an aftermarket wiimote and got nowhere, I suggest finding an OEM wiimote if you want to replicate my setup

@drewdevault looks nice, but i wonder weather you can precisely point the mouse with it?

iamreinder

@drewdevault I once did the same with a WiiMote. My software would also show a darker overlay over the screen with a clear circular area around the cursor,. Like a spotlight, but only when moving. When holding still, the overlay would disappear. There was a threshold to prevent the “spotlight” from annoyingly appearing on every little move. It helped keep track of where the cursor went.

Also in case it wasn't clear the primary motivator is landlords who are losing their investment in office real estate, combined with C-level FOMO on those investments, and pressure from commercial landlords on local government -- not any kind of mythical IRL synergy or whatever

@drewdevault I'm in the process of fighting my ex-employer's RTO in court. I just had my first mediation hearing yesterday but I'm not very optimistic.

However I'll do the thing to the end. The more painful it will be for the company the better I'll feel.

When I was discussing the matter with HR before being sacked, I tried to impress on them that should allow exceptions for people susceptible to over stimulation (which I consider myself to be one). They countered with "bring a diagnosis". It's amazing how years of meaningful service bring one no good will when it's in opposition to the corporate interest.

@drewdevault I wrote something about this yesterday elsewhere: Short version, my wife is now on week 5 of 6 weeks post-surgery and can't put any weight on her right leg, and her left leg is just barely weight-bearing. (Torn meniscus, both knees, one repaired + one yet to be operated on.)

Obviously - she couldn't RTO right now. And neither could I, since she can't walk or drive. Happily this is temporary + we both work from home, but RTO is actively harmful + stupid for so many people.
