@AlinaLeonova describing the cat pictures is the best part

DJGummikuh

@AlinaLeonova Really missing a "most of the times" here ๐Ÿ˜…

Alina Leonova

@DJGummikuh You can choose always, a small margin of error is acceptable๐Ÿ˜

Stefan Bohacek

@shtrom Thank you for tagging me!

I'm not too sure if polls like this are all that insightful, to be quite honest. You can always look at the results of @AltTextHealthCheck (see also stefanbohacek.com/blog/alttext -- perhaps it would be useful to do another update, see if the trend has started to pick up.)

Alina Leonova

@stefan Thanks, Iโ€™ll check it out and compare the results of the poll to the info Iโ€™ll get there.

Stefan Bohacek

@AlinaLeonova Ah, sorry, my reply was aimed at the person tagging me, I did not mean to be too dismissive!

Either way, you're welcome! I do find that results of these self-reporting polls skew a bit more positive, while this bot (not made by me, by the way) shows the average rate of around 35-40% of images having alt text.

And that is not to say anything about the quality of the alt text, which can sometimes be pretty inadequate.

Alina Leonova

@stefan Oh, thatโ€™s much lower than I expected ๐Ÿ˜” Yeah, I think those who donโ€™t do it might just not vote. Iโ€™ve seen that some people get annoyed when asked to add alt-text and even when others do it for them in the comments (which is such an asshole response!), so theyโ€™re probably annoyed by the poll as well ๐Ÿ˜

Stefan Bohacek

@AlinaLeonova Yeah, I saw the recent conversation around the topic of asking people to provide alt text on their images (not a fan!) and writing alt text for them (much better approach!).

Interestingly, and again, this is a self-reported poll, so take it with a grain of salt, but it seems that most people don't mind this.

stefanbohacek.online/@stefan/1

If you're interested, I just put some more relevant polls here: stefanbohacek.com/blog/polls-a

Alina Leonova

@stefan Block the person? Wow, I didnโ€™t expect anyone to do it. Just 1% but still ๐Ÿคฆ๐Ÿปโ€โ™€๏ธ And Iโ€™ve seen people insult those who add alt-text for them in the comments (there was a thread about it recently from an art account, Iโ€™ll try to find it), which is justโ€ฆ I donโ€™t even know what to say about those people.

Stefan Bohacek

@AlinaLeonova Yes, saw this, thank you!

And yeah, I've read about people getting blocked without being rude or snarky when providing alt text, I think some people just get too defensive about this, see it as a judgement no matter how you phrase your reply.

And genuinely I don't know what the best solution is here.

In the article I shared in my original post, it's clear that the interface and available tools can make a big difference.

How to change the culture though? I'm not so sure!

Alina Leonova

@stefan How to change the culture is the most important question! Tools are definitely important. Posts from blind users who say how alt-text impacts their experience have made a big impression on me, though admittedly I was already using alt-text. Conversations about it, education. Itโ€™s already much better here in the Fediverse than anywhere else, but we still have a long way to go.

CannaParts/PitWD

@AlinaLeonova

Please add "Almost"...

I'm getting better from image to image to not forget to add a sufficient Alt-Text.

I selected "Always" cause it's definitely the goal I'll reach.

Good Alt-Text is, even for me as a sighted person, a very useful enhancement.

Alina Leonova

@CannaParts I canโ€™t add options now because it would reset the poll ๐Ÿ˜ But yeah, if itโ€™s almost, you can definitely choose always.

Autoerotic Defenestration

@AlinaLeonova almost always :-)

I actually enjoy doing it, and have discovered it as sort of an art form of its own :)

Alina Leonova

@danielaKay Yeah, it can be an exercise creative/descriptive writing โ˜บ๏ธ

crossgolf_rebel on Calckey

@AlinaLeonova@wandering.shop Is it good or bad that you only ask the Mastodon users in the Fediverse?

The #Calckey users in the Fediverse always make picture descriptions....

although anyone who uses mastodon belongs to a strange people ๐Ÿ˜‰

Andrew Lewis Workshop

@AlinaLeonova always, except when I forget, or when the image is already described in the post itself.

Jinni

@AlinaLeonova I need a "Tries to as much as possible but sometimes the ADD demon in my head causes me to forget" option

Alina Leonova

@jinni I think you can choose โ€œalwaysโ€ in this case ๐Ÿ˜

Jabsonik

@AlinaLeonova @UnconventionalEmma โ€Almost alwaysโ€ wouldโ€™ve been the exactly right choice for me.

zeitverschreib [glitch]

@AlinaLeonova

Hey Alina, Iโ€™m running a small experiment here. Please boost for better reach ๐Ÿ™

Does your question include users from other platforms, even though you mention Mastodon exclusively?

Alina Leonova

@zeitverschreib Huh I mean everyone who can see this post. I guess I should have said Fediverse?

Gillinger

@AlinaLeonova
If that poll is correct then there are many more "Never"s than are owning up to it. I don't see even half the images on here with #AltTxt

Alina Leonova

@Gillinger The sample size might not be enough for accuracy, or people who never do it might not vote. I see quite a lot of images with alt-text. Iโ€™d say most of them in my timeline, but the truth is, I donโ€™t always check, so I might be wrong.

Norihiori

@AlinaLeonova What is a "boost" ? I have "share", "Star" and "bookmark" icon only. ๐Ÿค”

geoffl

@AlinaLeonova I try to but I don't always. I've ended up often deleting pictures or whole toots because I'm not happy with the alt text, or it's taking 10 minutes to write and rewrite and one finger typing on a phone with my massive hands is horrible. On the plus side I waste less time on mastodon now, as does everyone else who benefits from me not taking up space on their timeline.

geoffl

@AlinaLeonova
"Is it good alt text" would be more interesting, but that would be for others to judge. I've seen a lot that doesn't get close to conveying the spirit or information in the picture.

Alina Leonova

@geoffl For now I just want to know how many people do it. How well is a different question, but I think effort counts because not everyone is good at descriptions and it might take some time to learn.

Bauarbeiter* for Future

@AlinaLeonova I donโ€™t understand how to be part of the fediverse and how it works. No one seems to care about our posts. so we seldomly post pictures.

Alina Leonova

@BauarbeiterforFuture I donโ€™t know what youโ€™ve tried but following others and interacting with them and using relevant hashtags in your posts (because many people follow hashtags) might help reach your community. Good luck!

Christian Vogel

@AlinaLeonova almost always, thereโ€™s a strong expectation on chaos.social to do so, it doesnโ€™t cost me much extra time.

From time to time itโ€™s broken on iPhone (buttons to save are not reachable), then I donโ€™t.

Liminal witch ๐Ÿง™โ€โ™€๏ธ Sarah

@AlinaLeonova if I describe the image in the body of toot, is it considered as alt-text?

Alina Leonova

@xgebi I think it counts! The most important thing is that blind users know whatโ€™s in your picture โ˜บ๏ธ

Ms. Denie

@AlinaLeonova I have been known to forget, so "sometimes"

Alina Leonova

@A_denie Thatโ€™s okay, and you can always edit it later to add alt-text if you remember later. Happens to me too โ˜บ๏ธ

sahqon

@AlinaLeonova Usually, except when I already described everything in normal text anyway and the picture is just a flavor.

Kees van Malssen

@AlinaLeonova On my own posts I always add alt-text.
When boosting posts, alt-text being present helps. I don't exclude all posts without AT from boosting, but quite a few.

To balance out: sometimes I present an #Alt4you in a reply. So I also look in the replys before boosting (or before suggesting AT)

Tyr

@AlinaLeonova I rarely ever post images, but when I do, I try to add decent alt text.

Lux :flag_genderfluid:

@AlinaLeonova @leberschnitzel if you've subscribed to the bot and you post a toot with an image without alt text, it sends you a DM to remind you of editing your toot.

Schafstelze

@AlinaLeonova the 4% choosing 'never': Please block me. Seriously.

Marcos Dione

@AlinaLeonova "most of the time". Also, #phanpy nags you if you don't.

Chroniques autistes ๐Ÿ‡ซ๐Ÿ‡ท ๐Ÿ‡จ๐Ÿ‡ฆ

@AlinaLeonova Almost being disabled, and when I canโ€™t I use the #Alt4Me because there are always nice people happy to help. โค๏ธ

Alina Leonova

@adelinej Itโ€™s great that there are people who will help, and it makes sense that not everyone can do it ๐Ÿงก Adding the hashtag to ask for help counts just as much as adding alt-text yourself in my book!

Chroniques autistes ๐Ÿ‡ซ๐Ÿ‡ท ๐Ÿ‡จ๐Ÿ‡ฆ

@AlinaLeonova It makes sense yes, but for many people like me, I think the obligation to do it is high because of our sense of justice, and as the same time often some restrain themselves to share pictures when they donโ€™t have the spoons to alt text and/or to ask for help (I do). Not sure if I make sense. Itโ€™s complicated. ๐Ÿ˜Š๐Ÿ™ƒ(This is based on posts I have read in the autistic community).

Alina Leonova

@adelinej I understand ๐Ÿงก Thank you for doing what you can and try to not be hard on yourself. I get that the sense of justice can get in the way though, I also have that. Iโ€™m not autistic but perhaps my ADHD plays a role in it too.

NaClKnight is Black online!

Sometimes. If I'm posting a reply meme or gif in an existing conversation, or a post that isn't meant to be seen by many people i typically don't add alt text to those

Alina Leonova

@alttexthalloffame Yes, somebody has already mentioned it and Iโ€™ll check it out, thanks ๐Ÿ™

Alt Text Hall of Fame

@AlinaLeonova Ha, yes, this is @stefan again, owner of this account!

I posted my response separately to the person who tagged me, and for you, not expecting you to necessarily see it.

Alina Leonova

@alttexthalloffame Got it! Smart move because this post is getting out of hand and I might start missing replies soon ๐Ÿ˜…

Space Hobo Actual

@AlinaLeonova I don't add alt-text to direct replies to people I know, unless I also know that they aren't fully-sighted.

Alina Leonova

A few people pointed out that I should have asked Fediverse, not Mastodon. Sorry, my bad. I wonโ€™t edit the post now because when I did it in the past it reset the poll. If you see the poll, assume Iโ€™m asking you, even if youโ€™re not on Mastodon ๐Ÿ™

Cuddly Karb

@AlinaLeonova

Depends:

To main posts: usually yes.

In response to another user: usually no.

Alex@rtnVFRmedia Suffolk UK

@AlinaLeonova I always add it, but I generally use a full size computer (laptop) for Fediverse. I find it harder to do so when using a mobile phone (but I still add it), although that might simply be because I am old ๐Ÿ˜

Alina Leonova

@vfrmedia I understand, typing on the phone is less comfortable and slower than on a computer!

Arioch

@AlinaLeonova I never post images so i don't have to fill the alt text /o\

DELETED

@AlinaLeonova always. It's a proud mastodon tradition to help the disabled.

Alice DJ

@AlinaLeonova If I forget, a bot reminds it to me and I edit the picture.

DJ Cthulhu

@AlinaLeonova To be fair though I've only posted one image so far. #AltText

rostundrad

@AlinaLeonova when i want to Post a picture there ist in most situations No Time top add an alt-text. So i don't use Pictures at the Phone.

Stephanie Moore

@AlinaLeonova for survey sampling, this type of question is likely to over-sample for the first two and under sample for the third option as people self-select on whether to participate.

Alina Leonova

@StephanieMoore Yeah, Iโ€™m having another conversation about it right now. More accurate results can be found here: stefanbohacek.com/blog/alttext

Schroedinger

@AlinaLeonova I put sometimes, because I sometimes forget. But my aim is to say Always. I try to always do this.

Because I know that for many people it helps.

Alina Leonova

@alexadeswift I thought so, but having just talked to someone who wrote the article below, it turns out only up to 40% of images are posted with alt-text ๐Ÿ˜” stefanbohacek.com/blog/alttext

Ketakater

@AlinaLeonova heretic question - in times of AI, does it make a lot of sense to do manual image descriptions? Can't screen readers create them on the fly?

Mnemonicman

@AlinaLeonova Didn't used to but getting into the habit lately.

Rachel Greenham

@AlinaLeonova @Dianora always, but only because i have the client set to remind me. if I didn't have that i'd probably forget most times.

Michelle Hughes

@AlinaLeonova

Not only do I always alt-text my images, I sometimes alt-text other people's images with the Alt4you hashtag.

รngela Stella Matutina

@AlinaLeonova

Hell, I even add unsolicited alt text to images I didn't upload now and then. (And if they don't add it, I boost just my description, because I'm a passive-agressive bitch.)

ferricoxide

@AlinaLeonova@wandering.shop

More a situational type of question: if I'm posting from my laptop, then I strive to always add alt-text. If I'm posting from my phone, then it's significantly less so.

Your Weirdness

@AlinaLeonova voted "sometimes" becuase, I do it most of the time, but not "always".

Dragon

@AlinaLeonova Sometimes - I usually do (even if they're AI generated from the icecubes intergration) but I can't say I always remember to do it.

Mike Taylor ๐Ÿฆ•

@AlinaLeonova (The true answer is NEARLY always: I'm not perfect. But I voted for "always".)

Richard Terroriksson

@AlinaLeonova Always. It slows me down (which is fine, but it still feels like a trade-off sometimes, or maybe I can just try to get quicker at it), and I worry that it feeds AI (not only that, but I worry that Iโ€™m writing alt text as if AI were writing it). Never any jokes or burying of information in alt text (though I worry that Iโ€™m adding inflation in the alt text that belongs in the post).

ClaudetteK

@AlinaLeonova I said sometimes, because I always try to add alt-text, but sometimes it doesnโ€™t take and erases the text when I post. Not sure why that is.

Momo

@AlinaLeonova
I rarely don't add alt-text to images, in those cases I post something I want to show only to a certain person. Besides that I rather not post a picture before I post something without alt-text. There were cases where I just link to an older toot of mine with a picture (with alt-text) instead of re-posting it, because I'm too lazy to put in the alt-text again.

I wish I could put alt-text into a metadata fiels of a picture instead of typing it on the fly when posting.
