@AlinaLeonova @Methylcobalamin @AlinaLeonova I agree it's a PITA but I refuse to post less pics because I'm too lazy for an alt text ๐ @shtrom Thank you for tagging me! I'm not too sure if polls like this are all that insightful, to be quite honest. You can always look at the results of @AltTextHealthCheck (see also https://stefanbohacek.com/blog/alttexthealthcheck-image-accessibility-report-1/ -- perhaps it would be useful to do another update, see if the trend has started to pick up.) @stefan Thanks, Iโll check it out and compare the results of the poll to the info Iโll get there. @AlinaLeonova Ah, sorry, my reply was aimed at the person tagging me, I did not mean to be too dismissive! Either way, you're welcome! I do find that results of these self-reporting polls skew a bit more positive, while this bot (not made by me, by the way) shows the average rate of around 35-40% of images having alt text. And that is not to say anything about the quality of the alt text, which can sometimes be pretty inadequate. @stefan Oh, thatโs much lower than I expected ๐ Yeah, I think those who donโt do it might just not vote. Iโve seen that some people get annoyed when asked to add alt-text and even when others do it for them in the comments (which is such an asshole response!), so theyโre probably annoyed by the poll as well ๐ @stefan Block the person? Wow, I didnโt expect anyone to do it. Just 1% but still ๐คฆ๐ปโโ๏ธ And Iโve seen people insult those who add alt-text for them in the comments (there was a thread about it recently from an art account, Iโll try to find it), which is justโฆ I donโt even know what to say about those people. @AlinaLeonova Yes, saw this, thank you! And yeah, I've read about people getting blocked without being rude or snarky when providing alt text, I think some people just get too defensive about this, see it as a judgement no matter how you phrase your reply. And genuinely I don't know what the best solution is here. In the article I shared in my original post, it's clear that the interface and available tools can make a big difference. How to change the culture though? I'm not so sure! @stefan How to change the culture is the most important question! Tools are definitely important. Posts from blind users who say how alt-text impacts their experience have made a big impression on me, though admittedly I was already using alt-text. Conversations about it, education. Itโs already much better here in the Fediverse than anywhere else, but we still have a long way to go. Please add "Almost"... I'm getting better from image to image to not forget to add a sufficient Alt-Text. I selected "Always" cause it's definitely the goal I'll reach. Good Alt-Text is, even for me as a sighted person, a very useful enhancement. @CannaParts I canโt add options now because it would reset the poll ๐ But yeah, if itโs almost, you can definitely choose always. @AlinaLeonova almost always :-) I actually enjoy doing it, and have discovered it as sort of an art form of its own :) @AlinaLeonova@wandering.shop Is it good or bad that you only ask the Mastodon users in the Fediverse? @AlinaLeonova always, except when I forget, or when the image is already described in the post itself. @AlinaLeonova I need a "Tries to as much as possible but sometimes the ADD demon in my head causes me to forget" option @AlinaLeonova @UnconventionalEmma โAlmost alwaysโ wouldโve been the exactly right choice for me. Hey Alina, Iโm running a small experiment here. Please boost for better reach ๐ Does your question include users from other platforms, even though you mention Mastodon exclusively? @zeitverschreib Huh I mean everyone who can see this post. I guess I should have said Fediverse? @AlinaLeonova @Gillinger The sample size might not be enough for accuracy, or people who never do it might not vote. I see quite a lot of images with alt-text. Iโd say most of them in my timeline, but the truth is, I donโt always check, so I might be wrong. @AlinaLeonova I try to but I don't always. I've ended up often deleting pictures or whole toots because I'm not happy with the alt text, or it's taking 10 minutes to write and rewrite and one finger typing on a phone with my massive hands is horrible. On the plus side I waste less time on mastodon now, as does everyone else who benefits from me not taking up space on their timeline. @AlinaLeonova @geoffl For now I just want to know how many people do it. How well is a different question, but I think effort counts because not everyone is good at descriptions and it might take some time to learn. @AlinaLeonova I donโt understand how to be part of the fediverse and how it works. No one seems to care about our posts. so we seldomly post pictures. @BauarbeiterforFuture I donโt know what youโve tried but following others and interacting with them and using relevant hashtags in your posts (because many people follow hashtags) might help reach your community. Good luck! @AlinaLeonova almost always, thereโs a strong expectation on chaos.social to do so, it doesnโt cost me much extra time. From time to time itโs broken on iPhone (buttons to save are not reachable), then I donโt. @AlinaLeonova if I describe the image in the body of toot, is it considered as alt-text? @xgebi I think it counts! The most important thing is that blind users know whatโs in your picture โบ๏ธ @A_denie Thatโs okay, and you can always edit it later to add alt-text if you remember later. Happens to me too โบ๏ธ @AlinaLeonova Usually, except when I already described everything in normal text anyway and the picture is just a flavor. @AlinaLeonova On my own posts I always add alt-text. To balance out: sometimes I present an #Alt4you in a reply. So I also look in the replys before boosting (or before suggesting AT) @AlinaLeonova @leberschnitzel if you've subscribed to the bot and you post a toot with an image without alt text, it sends you a DM to remind you of editing your toot. @AlinaLeonova Almost being disabled, and when I canโt I use the #Alt4Me because there are always nice people happy to help. โค๏ธ @adelinej Itโs great that there are people who will help, and it makes sense that not everyone can do it ๐งก Adding the hashtag to ask for help counts just as much as adding alt-text yourself in my book! @AlinaLeonova It makes sense yes, but for many people like me, I think the obligation to do it is high because of our sense of justice, and as the same time often some restrain themselves to share pictures when they donโt have the spoons to alt text and/or to ask for help (I do). Not sure if I make sense. Itโs complicated. ๐๐(This is based on posts I have read in the autistic community). @adelinej I understand ๐งก Thank you for doing what you can and try to not be hard on yourself. I get that the sense of justice can get in the way though, I also have that. Iโm not autistic but perhaps my ADHD plays a role in it too. @AlinaLeonova Sometimes. If I'm posting a reply meme or gif in an existing conversation, or a post that isn't meant to be seen by many people i typically don't add alt text to those @alttexthalloffame Yes, somebody has already mentioned it and Iโll check it out, thanks ๐ @AlinaLeonova Ha, yes, this is @stefan again, owner of this account! I posted my response separately to the person who tagged me, and for you, not expecting you to necessarily see it. @alttexthalloffame Got it! Smart move because this post is getting out of hand and I might start missing replies soon ๐ @AlinaLeonova I don't add alt-text to direct replies to people I know, unless I also know that they aren't fully-sighted. A few people pointed out that I should have asked Fediverse, not Mastodon. Sorry, my bad. I wonโt edit the post now because when I did it in the past it reset the poll. If you see the poll, assume Iโm asking you, even if youโre not on Mastodon ๐ @AlinaLeonova I always add it, but I generally use a full size computer (laptop) for Fediverse. I find it harder to do so when using a mobile phone (but I still add it), although that might simply be because I am old ๐ @vfrmedia I understand, typing on the phone is less comfortable and slower than on a computer! @AlinaLeonova when i want to Post a picture there ist in most situations No Time top add an alt-text. So i don't use Pictures at the Phone. @AlinaLeonova for survey sampling, this type of question is likely to over-sample for the first two and under sample for the third option as people self-select on whether to participate. @StephanieMoore Yeah, Iโm having another conversation about it right now. More accurate results can be found here: https://stefanbohacek.com/blog/alttexthealthcheck-image-accessibility-report-1/ @AlinaLeonova I put sometimes, because I sometimes forget. But my aim is to say Always. I try to always do this. Because I know that for many people it helps. @alexadeswift I thought so, but having just talked to someone who wrote the article below, it turns out only up to 40% of images are posted with alt-text ๐ https://stefanbohacek.com/blog/alttexthealthcheck-image-accessibility-report-1/ I've actually found it helpful for including additional information/ making things clearer. @AlinaLeonova heretic question - in times of AI, does it make a lot of sense to do manual image descriptions? Can't screen readers create them on the fly? @AlinaLeonova @Dianora always, but only because i have the client set to remind me. if I didn't have that i'd probably forget most times. Not only do I always alt-text my images, I sometimes alt-text other people's images with the Alt4you hashtag. Hell, I even add unsolicited alt text to images I didn't upload now and then. (And if they don't add it, I boost just my description, because I'm a passive-agressive bitch.) @AlinaLeonova@wandering.shop @AlinaLeonova Sometimes - I usually do (even if they're AI generated from the icecubes intergration) but I can't say I always remember to do it. @AlinaLeonova (The true answer is NEARLY always: I'm not perfect. But I voted for "always".) @AlinaLeonova I write computer software for a living so I almost never remember to put ALT text. @AlinaLeonova The one time I've ever forgot to add alt-text, was of course the one time some self-appointed HOA asshole decided to police me for being exclusionary towards the blind or partially sighted. ๐ @AlinaLeonova @Dianora Where by always I mean the vast majority of the time. There are occasions where itโs not immediately possible. @AlinaLeonova I follow @alt_text โ they send a polite private note if you forget to write a photo description blurb. โฅ๏ธ @AlinaLeonova Always. It slows me down (which is fine, but it still feels like a trade-off sometimes, or maybe I can just try to get quicker at it), and I worry that it feeds AI (not only that, but I worry that Iโm writing alt text as if AI were writing it). Never any jokes or burying of information in alt text (though I worry that Iโm adding inflation in the alt text that belongs in the post). @AlinaLeonova I said sometimes, because I always try to add alt-text, but sometimes it doesnโt take and erases the text when I post. Not sure why that is. @AlinaLeonova It doesn't support alt text. ๐ @AlinaLeonova This is the only exception i am using a bot: Alt Bot Giving useful descriptions of my pics which i usually forgot in the past. ๐ Itโs the experience of being on Mastodon heavily for the last two years that has actually gotten me to be rigorous about my alt text for two decades of blogging I didnโt do it anywhere near frequently enough but since alt text was strongly recommended as the norm here on mastodon, I began doing it every single time โฆ โฆ and it has bled over into all activity online: with all my blogging and newsletter posts I now always do alt text @AlinaLeonova I want to hear from the "never" folks, not to berate them, but to find out why. Maybe some of them would be willing to send you a private message? @AlinaLeonova I don't post many images, and when I do, it's generally of my cats. I enjoy writing alt text descriptions of them. @AlinaLeonova @AlinaLeonova Biggest problem I have with adding alt-text was the realization that doing so is helping train AI. @AlinaLeonova I go the extra step and add alt text (or at least compose it and make it available) for other people's images too. @AlinaLeonova I even try no to boost images without alt-text though sometimes, more than I'd like to admit, I fail miserably at that. @AlinaLeonova I might have had some slip-ups early on, but now it's always. Even if it means that I post less images. I sometimes wrote alt-text back on Twitter years ago. @AlinaLeonova I always do now after seeing people I follow complain about it. It makes total sense and something as a fully-sighted person I am blind to unless I practice. Okay, that was a horrible pun. I apologize @AlinaLeonova@wandering.shop I'm not on Mastodon, so I won't vote. But I always add alt-text. @AlinaLeonova I donโt really post images (I might have rarely), but I plan to add alt text if I do. @AlinaLeonova "Always" like in "Always in principle except for a very few times when I'm in a hurry or something distracts me" - i.e. 98% and with very bad conscience for those 2 @AlinaLeonova I try to always but sometimes I don't have the mental bandwidth to, and I am sorry @AlinaLeonova I didn't know what alt-text was, or that it even existed before I joined Mastodon. @AlinaLeonova usually I will first forget and then the @PleaseCaption will remind me to add the alt text. |
@AlinaLeonova describing the cat pictures is the best part
