@AlinaLeonova if I describe the image in the body of toot, is it considered as alt-text?

@xgebi I think it counts! The most important thing is that blind users know what’s in your picture ☺️

@AlinaLeonova @xgebi or can share the joke, read the text you screenshotted, know what's in the meme you post, or the graph you show., etc.

@Liminal witch πŸ§™β€β™€οΈ Sarah @Alina Leonova It's not alt-text. It's an image description. That term doesn't depend on where the image description goes.

I'm not sure myself if it counts. I wouldn't exclude there being Mastodon users who demand there be an alt-text in the image even though there's an image description in the post.

That's why I myself always describe my own original images twice: The main, long, full description is way too long for alt-text, and it contains explanations which don't belong into alt-text. So it goes into the post. I don't have to worry about character limits here because I have none.

But just in case an image description in the alt-text is considered absolutely mandatory, regardless of where else there is one, I always make another, much shorter image description for the alt-text. Just to be on the safe side.

How about you, what's the matter? Doesn't your app support alt-text, or is adding alt-text broken, or did nobody tell you how to add alt-text with whatever app you use?
