Tuxedo cat with droopy ears
Christian Tietze

@christianselig did the cat just dodge an armor breaking bullet that hit the concrete wall?

Would explain the expression

David Bureš

@christianselig He just like me fr (I also had an ear infection and needed drops recently)

Is there any "meta" with YouTube and which video codec to upload so as to help with processing times? h264? VP9?

@christianselig anecdotally I’ve found AV1 to be much faster than H.264

Sang

@christianselig Lower resolution videos will generally process much, much faster, so if you want to optimize for processing time, I’ve found 720p video processes pretty quickly (it’ll be a bit faster too if you encode based on the YT guidelines - h.264 @ ~7.5 Mbps): support.google.com/youtube/ans.

YT seems to always re-encode uploads though, so I usually just live with the processing time and upload prores 422. The quality generally is noticeably better, esp at the higher end of the ladder like 2k/4k.

@christianselig it’s possible you have some encoder setting enabled/disabled that’s causing YT to deprioritize your processing, but it’s more likely deprioritized because you don’t have a ton of/consistent views on your channel. Also 4K will slow down processing a good bit.

Excited for Severance season 2, but I miss when shows came out yearly as a kid, I barely remember what happened in season 1 at this point

@christianselig there are very well put together YouTube videos explaining what all happened.

YouTube wouldn't build an app for the Apple Vision Pro, so I did! Introducing Juno, an Apple Vision Pro app for YouTube, now available at juno.vision 📺🥽

@christianselig Juno looks great, but unfortunately I don’t have the full $3,604 to spare. I do, however, have $5 I’d be eager to part with if you were ever to make a version for iOS.

An amazing independent client for YouTube is needed for all the same reasons that Apollo was needed for Reddit. The current crop of them is pretty awful.

Congrats on having a great looking app on launch day!

@christianselig At first I didn't realize this was a video, then clicked and it gets even better. It's a 3D printer for you, a thousand finger massage unit for your cat. :)

Gerty Steinblatt

@christianselig
All the cats I've known well (20+) have liked lying on top of washing machines during the spin cycle (even during cool 30℃ washes).

This machine looked pretty vibratey in a similar way. You may draw your own conclusions. :)

@christianselig I voted B originally as I “like” it more, but on reflection A reads more as a Tiger than just a cat. So now I’m conflicted.

bapt :smug:

@christianselig B, because it's a cub and because the tail is important:)

Here's a little sneak peek for what would have been Apollo for iPad. You have stackable panes allowing you to easily view and move through multiple things at once (or go full screen!), Gallery Mode, and sections are moved to the side, with support for opening new tabs

Apollo for iPad picture, showing a tab bar on the left of the different app sections, with tabbed browsing support underneath with tabs for r/AskReddit and r/NintendoSwitch, and right of that you have two panes open, one of the StardewValley subreddit with its banner, icon, and description at the top, and the other a post from the subreddit.

@christianselig glad we don’t get to have that, would have been horrible. Lucky Reddit saved us 😭

@christianselig loved and miss Apollo Christian. Not tempted to build a Lemmy app?

Christian Selig

Also, if you bought the "Goodbye Apollo" wallpaper set, might be worth refreshing it! It started out with 8 wallpapers but is now up to 30, which you get for free if you unlocked it previously.

If you didn't, you can unlock it in the Apollo app or from christianselig.gumroad.com/l/g

A collage of new Apollo wallpapers available in the set, including Mechapollo, Solara, Campfire, Floating, Apollo-san, and Squingus!

@christianselig no chance at getting a “diving for upvotes” themed wallpaper, eh? That was my favourite icon. Not sure if you’re adding any more in the future but that would be a cool one to add! The ones you’ve already got are incredible already

@christianselig These are great! Thank you for putting this together. I can’t really speak for any community, but I’m sure I’m not alone when I say that you did some amazing things with Apollo. You deserve to be proud for all of it. I’m looking forward to all the things you do in the future.

Thought I'd record deleting Apollo and its API token from the Reddit dashboard 🥹 ow

Well, at least Reddit has admitted their "we're not trying to be like Twitter/Elon" stuff was false

Quote from NBC article:

In an interview Thursday with NBC News, Reddit CEO Steve Huffman praised Musk’s aggressive cost-cutting and layoffs at Twitter, and said he had chatted “a handful of times” with Musk on the subject of running an internet platform.

Huffman said he saw Musk’s handling of Twitter, which he purchased last year, as an example for Reddit to follow.

“Long story short, my takeaway from Twitter and Elon at Twitter is reaffirming that we can build a really good business in this space at our scale,” Huffman said.

“Now, they’ve taken the dramatic road,” he added, “and I guess I can’t sit here and say that we’re not either, but I think there’s a lot of opportunity here.”

@christianselig

Astonishing that _anyone_ thinks Musk's work at Twitter has been positive in any way. Even financially -- is that awful platform really going to start earning back the -- what -- $22bn he's lost on it so far?

The Animal and the Machine

@christianselig @DataDrivenMD
These CEO’s think people are idiots, which makes them idiots.

If you want to talk deals, it’s either
a) I give freely into the public domain and expect everything to be in the public domain.
b) You pay people who add value and we all have a commercial relationship.

In some ways I’m pleased this control is exposed, but it didn’t have to be this way.

Christian Selig

It's a real shame that Reddit seems to care this little about the community that rather than making an effort to talk to developers and moderators and apologize for how this was handled, they'd rather just wall themselves off and and dare users to keep going. theverge.com/2023/6/13/2375955

Christian Selig

No one is asking Reddit for the moon and the stars, just to listen to small changes.

Even Twitch, which made horrendous moves this month, recognized that the community is what gives their company any value at all, and responded in some capacity to make their users feel heard.

Christian Selig

As the subreddit blackout begins, I wanted to say thank you from the bottom of my heart to the Reddit community and everyone standing up ❤️ Let's hope Reddit listens. reddit.com/r/apolloapp/comment

@christianselig I'm hoping they change course but I'm going to delete the apollo icon from my homescreen just in case. Wouldn't want to accidentally visit the site.

Best of luck 🤞

Apollo will close down on June 30th. Reddit’s recent decisions and actions have unfortunately made it impossible for Apollo to continue. Thank you so, so much for all the support over the years. ❤️ reddit.com/r/apolloapp/comment

@christianselig Thank you for a great app. On the plus side: I’m already excited for what you do next.

I’ve had a lot of questions about Reddit’s planned AMA today and “What if they…”, so I added a section to the bottom of my post to answer that and thought I’d share it here too.

reddit.com/r/apolloapp/comment

A section of my post titled “What if…” I've seen a lot of questions along the lines of: "What if Reddit gives you a deadline extension because of this post and posts by other developers?" and that's something I truly would have loved for them to have made an effort to communicate earlier. You can't give developers 30 days between when the pricing is announced and when they will start incurring charges, and *also* wait a week (25% of the time we're given) between replying to emails without so much as a "we hear you're concerned about the short timeline and looking into what we can do". In conjunction with your previous emails, it just appears like you've stopped any desire to communicate with developers, in a period where we have a serious, expensive deadline looming with not that much time to wind down our apps.

I’ve ran out of characters to transcribe the alt text, please see last section in linked thread.

Got off my call with Reddit just now about the API. Bad news unless I come up with 20 million dollars (not joking). Appreciate boosts. reddit.com/r/apolloapp/comment

@christianselig Sounds like they are trying to kill off 3rd party apps in order to have full control over their users exclusively via their own app. That sucks. I don't use Apple anymore but when I did I used Apollo and it's a top quality Reddit client. Hope you're able to develop another app/income stream.

My new favorite Siri/HomePod interaction just happened 😛

“Hey Siri pause”

-HomePod lowers music volume to speak-

“There's nothing playing”

-increases music volume back up-

@christianselig I had something like that:
“Hey Siri, turn on the lights in the living room”
“Okay, some of the lights didn’t respond, you can ask me which ones”
“Which ones?”
“Here’s what I found on the internet for ‘which ones’”

😐
