Apollo will close down on June 30th. Reddit’s recent decisions and actions have unfortunately made it impossible for Apollo to continue. Thank you so, so much for all the support over the years. ❤️ reddit.com/r/apolloapp/comment

@christianselig
I'm very glad I already started getting into Mastodon. The writing has been on the wall for a while, but this whole API debacle is really sealing the deal on me abandoning the platform.

Michael Kotlarz

@jargoggles @nonproductive @christianselig
Not sure I could say it better. I'm just getting setup here on Mastodon (also awesome band) and I am going to miss Reddit, but when you start chasing money over content and form, people leave.

Barker

@jargoggles
As someone who's trying to get into Mastodon as a replacement as an 'average' programming Redditor, where should I start?

cytokine_storm

@internalBarker @jargoggles trying following hashtags relevant to programming and the languages you know/like. You can subscribe to hashtags in the gui :)

Andre

@cytokine_storm is it possible to subscribe to a hashtag in the Android app?

cytokine_storm

@andre1980 Should be. Don't know how since I don't have an android though 🤷

hearthing_dev

@cytokine_storm @internalBarker @jargoggles I’ve followed a bunch of hashtags. Will posts from them show up in the home tab or somewhere else?

Dean

@christianselig So sad to read. It was really one of my most used app on my phone, and it'll be heavily missed.
Leaving Apollo means leaving Reddit for me.
Take care !

Bas

@deanatoire @christianselig Same here. Thank you Christian, we love you and we loved Apollo. It’s sad to see it end this way. Take care. 👊🏻

Robert Petersen 🇺🇸

@christianselig wanna be among the first to say: thanks for everything.

It was great fun while it lasted and I look forward to seeing what you end up with next!

❤️

re_chief

@christianselig Man, this sucks. What are you going to do next?

Gracjan Nowak

@re_chief @christianselig How about a client for Lemmy, the Reddit alternative that’s part of the Fediverse? We have Mastodon clients from developers of former Twitter clients, so why not do the same with Reddit and Lemmy? 🤓

Rob

@gracjan @re_chief @christianselig Indeed a Lemmy client would be superb. Currently the iOS apps available are 0 in the App Store and only two (Mlem, Lemmur) in TestFlight out of which one is lacking slots. I loved Apollo thank you so much for creating it and maintaining it with awesome features over the years. It made Reddit superb! #LemmyiOSclient appraven.net/openLink.php?list

Austin Philp

@gracjan @re_chief @christianselig

I read on a Lemmy thread that there are folks working on a reddit-compatible API for lemmy, which would mean next to no effort in migrating from reddit to Lemmy for existing apps, could be the start of something exciting!

Cyan Sheep

@gracjan @re_chief @christianselig That would be incredible. There aren't that many lemmy clients compared to mastodon. It's time to shine, lemmy!

Mathew

@re_chief @christianselig maybe convert Apollo into a Lemmy client?

Lucas Cantor

@christianselig oh damn. It was beautiful while it lasted. Thank you so much for everything 🤗

Guy English

@christianselig Damn. I’m so sorry. You’ve done terrific work and this is a really awful outcome.

mb

@christianselig I will miss this app so so much. Thanks for building it with so much care.

heiko

@christianselig thanks for all the effort! Good luck to you!

Josh Dick :mac:

@christianselig Heartbreaking and end of an era! Thanks for everything you did for both Apollo and Reddit itself. Can't wait to see what's next for/from you.

rwgrier

@christianselig such a bummer. Apollo is/was my only window into Reddit. I’m looking forward to what you work on next.

Andrew Layton

@christianselig 😢 This is terrible news, but completely understandable. Thanks so much for everything, Christian!

Eric Leamen

@christianselig Heartbreaking. Even as a light Reddit user, I preferred Apollo and have used it for years. I'm so sorry this is happening.

Xavi Moll

@christianselig That sucks hard. Hoping that everything turns out alright for you! ❤️

AudraTran :debian:

@christianselig if you're looking for more work, I've got some real estate app ideas I could pass your way and help you to develop and market.

Jan Armbrust 

@christianselig So sad to hear that! Another great app goes away 😭

Simon B. Støvring

@christianselig Wow. I’m so sorry to hear that. I truly don’t think it would come to this. Thanks for setting the bar so high the last many years 😢❤️

Paul Kleinschmidt

@christianselig I understand, but what an ultimate sadness. Thanks for making Reddit useable.

Michal Tynior

@christianselig This is sad to read. Apollo is a great application so thank you for all the work you put into it ❤️ 👏

BrokkoliMuskelSkeletor

@christianselig thank you for everything! Without your incredible app, Reddit will be a footnote in history. At least for me.

Wish you all the best for any future projects!

Brett Elliff

@christianselig I’m really sorry to hear that and I have been limiting my Apollo usage to save you API calls. I was hoping saner heads would prevail but that just is not how most American corporations work. I'm kind of glad I have been using Mastodon more than reddit latley but I will miss Apollo, the site is just not usable without IMO. I hope you do not stop developing apps, you do fantastic and passionate work! ❤️

Bill Graefe

@gatewayy Don’t. There’s no charge before he shuts off the app on June 30. Abuse Reddit and optionally follow the boycott June 12–14

Jay P

@christianselig Damn. 😢
I look forward to whatever you end up doing next. Thanks for all your hard work through the years.

Gary Ash

@christianselig I won’t look for a refund but will off Reddit.

Romain Pouclet

@christianselig super sorry to read that but honestly I get it, even if they rolled back the changes, it feels like they burnt the bridge. Good luck for whatever you work on next!

Ian Dick

@christianselig Sorry to read this…and thanks for the great work over the years.

Justin Ferrell

@christianselig that fucking sucks, man. I can’t wait to see what you do next. We’ll be there day one!

Ernesto Monasterio

@christianselig This is deeply upsetting and heartbreaking. Thanks for all these years of Apollo. One of my favorite iOS apps ever. I’m looking forward to whatever you decide to do next 💜

Ernesto Monasterio

@christianselig PS: Have some love in the form of a 5 bucks donation. I hope everyone presses the “No refund” option when the time comes.

A screenshot of the “About” screen from the Reddit client Apollo showing a “Thank you” message after a donation was made.
DELETED

@christianselig Thank you for your service 🫡 (and fuck reddit)

Jaime Creixems

@christianselig So sad to hear this! I hope your next endeavor goes great and lasts a long time!

Daniel :nixos:

@christianselig Thank you so much for all your hard work over the years. Apollo really became reddit for me.

Ian B

@christianselig gutted. But thank you for all the care and attention you gave to our Reddit experience over the years.

Dave Low

@christianselig I’ve used Apollo far more than any other app on iOS. I sure hope Reddit comes to their senses and reverses course. Good luck to you going forward.

Pindakaas

@christianselig o no. So sad to read this. Thank you so much for your hard work all that time.

The iPad version of Apollo will never see the day 😢.

geoffeg

@christianselig A massive "thank you”. Apollo is an amazing app and I greatly appreciate all the hard work you've put into it.

Flaky

God, Reddit corp. has been disgusting lately - especially towards you. They want the enterprise-level price but without providing the enterprise-level support.

In any case, thanks for the work making Reddit usable on my iPad. Hoping for a newer/better project, post-Apollo.

BenRiceM

@christianselig that’s fucking rough, I’m so sorry.

But at the same time, I’m incredibly excited to see why you work on next

brianpierini

@christianselig Thank you so much for everything you've done for the community. I think I’m going to miss my Pixel Pal the most. :(

Julian

@christianselig
Wow, this is sad. :(
I wish you all the best, Christian.

Brady Valentino 🧣

@christianselig my most used app for 8 years. 🥺 Is there any way to leave a donation if I’ve previously purchased the lifetime premium subscription? I’m not seeing any options in the app

DELETED

@christianselig love what you did for many years. The quality and design language. I’m sure you will find something you want to build next and be passionate about. What ever it may be, it surely will be great. ❤️

Just read the whole post on Reddit. WTF. What a story 😔

Arctic

@christianselig thank you for developing such a banger app, it was great before reddit pulled this

Chris Offner

@christianselig I’m sorry this happened to you and all of us, but thank you so much for your great work! ☺️

Overcome5588

@christianselig Well thats fucking sad. Sorry Reddit fucked you over.

Otto Schmilinsky

@christianselig @webjac It was what Reddit was looking for, requesting an unpayable amount.

Marco Zehe

@christianselig What a sad, sad piece of news! Thank you for all you have done over the years to make Reddit accessible to blind and visually impaired users through your app! I’m sorry that not even Apple’s clear statement in the WWDC keynote could turn things around for you! Hope to hear from you with your next adventure!

Ryan Hyde

@christianselig just got to the part where you explain their lie. And I gotta say, that’s it for me. I was thinking of still using them after all this because I get personal value from the site, but I’m not engaging with such a maliciously dishonest company.

Dennis

@christianselig I’m really sorry to hear that too. I love Apollo and have been using it since it came out. Best wishes on your next project!

Sean Harding

@christianselig I'm so sorry, Christian. Thank you for all of your incredibly hard work on Apollo. It’s no exaggeration to say that it truly made my life better. I am looking forward to hearing what's next, and I will support it in any way I can.

Dunkle McPhee

@christianselig sorry to hear this. Thank you for a wonderful app.

Karan Thukral

@christianselig Sad to see it comes to this and I can't imagine how difficult the decision would have been for you. Apollo was one of my favorite apps on the platform and it will be dearly missed along with Rupert (pixel pal).

I'm excited to see what you do next!!

Shawn O.

@christianselig Thank you Christian. This was the most used app on my phone. Sad to see it come to this. Not sure I will continue on Reddit after this.

Luca Bernardi

@christianselig Apollo is one of the best app on my phone; really love the craftsmanship you've brought to the platform. Thank you.

Charlie ⚡️

@christianselig dammit. i was starting to really enjoy reddit because of apollo. it's a fantastic app.

Daryl Baxter

@christianselig Sorry to read about the ridiculousness you’ve had to deal with there.
Looking forward to what’s next though.

Jan

@christianselig Maddening. This will be the end for me on Reddit. Thank you for everything. One of the best iOS apps ever 💔

maique :prami:

@christianselig So, SO, sorry. For me Apollo IS Reddit. I’m done.

Laowai

@christianselig Apollo Ultra user here. I’m absolutely gutted for you Christian. Thank you so much for making - for me - the best iOS app I’ve ever had the pleasure to use. Like many have said already, I’m looking forward to whatever you decide to work on next. Also, say hi to Hugo for me! He and I have scrolled 3.5 miles together…

Riley Testut :fatpikachu:

@christianselig fuck 😞 I’m so sorry Christian, Apollo deserves better than this

Wishing you best of luck with whatever comes next 💜

DELETED

@christianselig Why would it close when its an accesibility-based app and Reddit said that accessibility-based apps would be excempt from the API changes?

Klint Ramdass

@christianselig Thank you for all of your hard work. Apollo was the best Reddit client I've ever used and one of my favourite, most-used apps overall. Looking forward to whatever you choose to do next.

Adam

@christianselig Thanks for what you've done and how transparent you've been. It's rough to be sidelined and strongarmed like that for no reason other than greed.

Inferis

@christianselig 😞
Oh man, that's incredibly rough. So sorry.
Hope you find a new amazing project to work on. ❤️

Omar

@christianselig honestly the worst fucking news I've heard in a while. Tweetbot and Apollo. Seriously what the actual fuck is up with Reddit / Twitter.

Jeze3D.exe ☑

@justomar the two best apps on iOS. I’m glad tweetbot found a home with ivory for mastodon. I’m hoping Christian can retool Apollo for a different service like Lemmy.

noah

@christianselig I am so sorry, Christian. This is a terrible outcome, but I hope you know how much each and every one of us appreciates everything you’ve done. Thank you for making my favourite app 💜

Matt VanOrmer

@christianselig i am so sorry, Christian — and *thank you* for all you’ve done to push back on this bullshit.

rauli

@christianselig thank you for the great app. Now I've got a slot to fill in my iPhones bottom bar. No, it's not going to be reddit app.

Adam 🆒

@christianselig damn man that's rough =/ Sorry to hear that but we're sure you'll come up with something just as dope in the future!

Justin Purnell

@christianselig This is the worst…only way I could ever bother to use Reddit. Any chance you would open source part of it?

Matt Fantinel

@christianselig hope you can have some well-earned rest and can find something great to put your talent into. Thanks for all the work in Apollo!

Lee

@christianselig I’m sorry, Christian. I know you will create something new and it will succeed. 👍🏼👍🏼

Ged Maheux

@christianselig @flargh utterly and completely, and in any other way, insane and unfair. I am truly truly sorry that this is happening to you. I know all too well what you’re going through. Let me know if either I or the Iconfactory can help you in any way. 👊

a quiet misdreavus

@christianselig this absolutely sucks man, wish you the best

thanks for dropping in my Twitter DMs and flexing my team's little Markdown library ❤️ felt kinda surreal to look up from my phone and tell my partner "Apollo Reddit guy is in my DMs and we're just chatting??"

Em McDonald 🏳️‍⚧️

@christianselig damn it. Such a great app. Literally the only reason I use Reddit.

So weird watching these social media monoliths gutting themselves…

CodingPanic

@christianselig Man, that sucks. No more Reddit for me since their app sucks, and web isn’t much better.

Lonnie

@christianselig Absolutely horrible it has come to this. Thank you for all of the work you put into Apollo over the years to make it such a fun app.

Mad respect for everything you accomplished and I can't wait to see what you will do next.

Arthur

@christianselig 😥 for many people, including me, the end of Reddit. Can’t wait to see what you come up next!

Chad Marshall

@christianselig damn that sucks! Thank you very much for all the great years of Apollo! It honestly kept me on iOS a few times. Looking forward to what you drop next!

DELETED

@christianselig @bye Just sent you 3x$5 tips through the app. No refunds for me, Christian. It’s the least I can do for years of enjoying Reddit thanks to your app. Next pizza is on me.

DELETED

@_bnicholls @christianselig @bye Under Settings you can tap What’s New and there is an option to submit a tip.

Ben Nicholls

@nicolas @christianselig @bye is this only in Ultra? I have Pro and when I tap on unlock ultra Apollo crashes.

DELETED

@_bnicholls I already have Ultra and sent a tip. Not sure what the difference is.

bye :niko_speak:

@_bnicholls I have the latest update and it looks like both Apollo Pro and the Tip Jar have been removed from new sales. You can buy his other apps though (Pixel Pals, Amplosion and Achoo), with Pixel Pals giving him the most money.

bye :niko_speak:

@_bnicholls @nicolas @christianselig He just added the Tip Jar back, check the settings page! :)

Hector Cruz

@christianselig I'm so sorry it came down to this, thanks for building such a great app and be sure that many people including myself will continue to support your work. F*#!k Reddit.
