Apollo will close down on June 30th. Reddit’s recent decisions and actions have unfortunately made it impossible for Apollo to continue. Thank you so, so much for all the support over the years. ❤️ reddit.com/r/apolloapp/comment

@christianselig so sorry to read all this Christian! You deserved better. Apollo is an amazing app! 💙

It introduced me to Reddit in the first place. Its end will mean the end of my Reddit use.

Jesse Youngblood

@christianselig As a Apollo Ultra Lifetime subscriber, I must thank you for years of a genuinely fantastic app. ❤️

Yesh

@christianselig with the receipts and a good summary of their thinking.

encyclops

@christianselig I can’t believe I’m gonna have to ditch yet another social media site for being complete bastards. Apollo was my favorite and it wasn’t even close. Thanks for the time we had with it.

JieqinT

@christianselig #Apollo is the one of the must have apps I own, I need to find an app to fill that hole in my homescreen now.

It's been enjoying the app for the better part of 6 years. Thank you for your contributions.

#Apollo will be missed. RIP.

D.B. Galeli 🔱

@christianselig I’m so sorry to hear what you’ve been going through and that you had to make this choice

Reddit could’ve easily nailed this, instead they chose to peddle duplicitous BS

I’ve not only been a happy user since day 1, but you were such an inspiration to me that I ended up developing apps myself and always make it a habit of mentioning you in my “Special Thanks” sections

Thanks for everything, I look forward to your next big thing and hope to bump into you again at the next WWDC

LSNLDN

@christianselig hoping this will be what moves everyone over to the fediverse, not using Reddit without your app!

MrFrobozz

@christianselig I wanted to say thank you for Apollo and for being an excellent steward of the project. Few developers are as committed to quality and to their users as you are.

I will be one, I’m sure one of many, that will be refusing a refund. And I’ve made one last contribution to the Tip Jar. It’s not much, but I hope it helps get you started on your next project.

Becky Hansmeyer

@christianselig So sorry, Christian. 😢 I was tearing up reading your post and all the kind comments. Looking forward to whatever comes next in the Pixel Pals Extended Universe. 🐯

Tom Powell

@christianselig thanks for everything, i've been using apollo since i switched back to iphone years ago. i guess its probably time to stop using reddit (...after 13 years).

Kris

@christianselig

Sad. It was nice while it lasted. Thank you for a most wonderful app

Brad

@christianselig Sad! Although I haven't used Apollo in a few months as I switched away from an iPhone. I loved using the app when I was. Thank you got what you provided!

Greg Spradlin

@christianselig That’s a shame. After June 30, I will use Reddit only with “old Reddit” on desktop, as long as that survives.

DELETED

@christianselig Sad this day has come but it's out of your hands Christian. Thank you for all the years of hard work, community engagement, cool icons and great design. You can look back and be really proud of what you achieved with Apollo.

Wishing you even more success with your next venture. 🙂

Anirudh

@christianselig 😢 Apollo will be missed. Reddit team sucks.

everything enthusiast

@christianselig By far one of the best apps on the entirety of the App Store. It will be missed heavily. 💔 Do you have plans to make the app open source after June 30th?

Derek

@christianselig I’m really sorry, Christian, you got treated terribly by Reddit. Whatever you’re gonna do after this, I’m looking forward to it!

kyvan d.

And the downfall continues in the app universe. Thank you @christianselig for making a wonderful app, making the platform a better place. Hopefully, new ideas will spawn up and we will still be here for those.

Jason Meaden

@gruber @christianselig It’s going to be up there with the classic all time AMAs.

I wonder if they’ll get Victoria back for it.

Eshu Marneedi

@gruber Knowing spez he’ll probably just continue to make defamatory statements throughout the AMA. Total piece of shit.

DELETED

@gruber @christianselig I mean sure, you can try and explain a bad call. Still seems like they chose the worst decision of all.

Can’t wait :)

Sam Gross

@gruber @christianselig I predict Woody Harrelson level artful dodging.

Darren

@SamTheGeek "Yeah, can we all just get back to talking about what a piece of shit I am?" @gruber @christianselig

Omar

@gruber @christianselig I don't know what he's expecting to come out of this. Everyone is visibly pissed. I don't see him rolling back on the decision

𝕔𝕙𝕣𝕚𝕤 𝕠𝕧𝕖𝕣𝕔𝕒𝕤𝕙

@gruber have you met Steve before? He’s very cowardly. All the “questions” that actually get answered will be planted. They might as well just call it a press release, not an AMA.

Matt

@gruber All the “posts you may like” related to that are very telling.

Daniel :nixos:

@gruber @christianselig Still no word on when it will happen. Total damage control …

DopeGhoti

@gruber @christianselig
I wonder if the AMA itself will be locked from further comment as fast as the AMA announcement was.

Torstein

@gruber @christianselig i think spaz will just answer whichever question he feels are benign enough, and ignore the hard tough ones. possibly have employee-redditors plant safe questions for him to answer. nothing interesting or useful will come out of this i'm afraid

Yury Molodtsov

@gruber @christianselig Knowing him, he will just edit users' question to answer what he wants

Sam

@gruber @christianselig listen, can we just talk about “Rampart”?

joostdh

@gruber @christianselig Like others have mentioned: he’s only gonna want to talk about Rampart.

Gareth Harmer

@gruber @christianselig Came here for the references to Rampart; was not disappointed.

Laurent Sansonetti

@christianselig Apollo is my favorite iPhone app, and has been for a few years. The work you did on it is just incredible, to say the least. This is a really sad outcome but the days ahead will be better. ❤️

DELETED

@christianselig By the way Christian, I don't think you need to offer refunds to customers, except maybe customers who bought the app within 1 month of the announcement by Reddit. It's not your fault they are closing.

I bought your app but certainly don't expect a refund.

As I longer use Apple devices I have no way of declining it, if offered. So to make it simple, just don't offer refunds.

I'm sure people would understand.

Alex Voss

@christianselig Hope you find a way to redirect your talents that makes you happy. ❤️

heshsum

@christianselig That’s very sad, but I can totally understand your reasoning 😔
One would think that the company behind a community driven platform like Reddit would be better at interacting with the users and developers.

BuildingBabel

@christianselig you’re amazing. People would follow you wherever you land, whatever you create… just so you know!

Shaun

@christianselig so sorry Christian, Apollo is probably the most-used app on my phone, and I've taken loads of UX inspiration from it for my own apps. It sucks how Reddit has treated you, what a bunch of wankers

Rizwan :ivory_elephant:

@christianselig I’m so sorry to hear this.
Sending ❤️ form other side of the world.

Jason 👀

@christianselig I just read the thread on Reddit, truly horrible. Have you maybe considered creating an Apollo-like Mastodon client? The ability to control pretty much everything with just swiping is something I’ve never seen anywhere else.

Michael Xander

@christianselig Oh no 🥹. I’m sorry your work had to end on those terms. I use Apollo Ultra daily and will miss it tremendously. Reddit won’t be the same without it. In fact, I hope Lemmy gets more attention. Thank you for making Apollo 🙏

Ryan the Design Lion

@christianselig I am so sorry, what a crappy situation.

Apollo has been on my Home Screen for years. It’s an accomplishment. Thank you for it!

vordenken 👨🏼‍💻

@christianselig This will cut my screentime in half… Thanks I guess?
Jokes aside, thanks for this amazing app and only the best for the future christian 🫡

Mogleg

@christianselig sent a tip your way in appreciation of the time we’ve had, Apollo and I. As a paying customer of Apollo I’m sad to see it go but I see no other alternative. So long and thanks for the fish 😊

McGuggery

@christianselig Always wanted to cut my Reddit addiction. This is the wake up call I needed.

Kai

@christianselig Man this sucks, lots of cool stuff for reddit being shut down bc of their changes

Wesley

@christianselig 🫡

Apollo and Tweetbot (rip), and now Ivory, have been three of my favorite apps on iPhone/iPad. I was thrilled to see Apollo in the keynote Monday. You’ve built a beautiful thing and you should be so proud. You made Reddit useable for me.

Truly, thank you. I wish you all the best in your next endeavor.

I can’t completely abandon Reddit right now because of some of the subs I’m in, so I’m going desktop-only when Apollo dies.

Krautwald

@christianselig It was great while it lasted, Apollo made Reddit actually useable

Adara

@christianselig I’ve never been a heavy been a Reddit user and this is the end of the line for me. Apollo has been a joy to use and I will miss it, but moreover I do not want to be part of supporting this kind of behaviour. I’m too disillusioned to believe it will matter, but I hope others will delete their accounts as well. It’s the only power end users have in the end.

Cesare Forelli

@christianselig I'm very sorry they behaved like total assholes, and then went above and beyond to top themselves with the threat accusations

Chris

@christianselig a very dignified post. Hope you land running.

Phil Amour

@christianselig I’m so sorry! I’ve been user since day one, subscriber and beta tester. One of my most favorite apps ever hands down. It was also amazing seeing friend’s icons in the app and on my Home Screen. Pixel pals was a delight. I’m excited to see what you do next - you’re super talented and make great software.

PS: spez is a nonce, I’m deleting my Reddit account on June 30.

João Almgren

@christianselig Can't wait to see your next project. Apollo was by far the most polished social media app I've used. It was always a joy to read your release notes, too.

Jack Yan (甄爵恩)

@christianselig Good on you for doing everything you could, and protecting yourself against their dishonesty.

Stez :kare_mac:

@christianselig so gutted. I loved using Apollo when I was on Reddit. It was such a beautifully crafted app and you could tell a lot of love and heart when into it. No doubt you’ll have no problem landing on your feet as you’ve buckets of talent, Chris!

Rob

@christianselig Got the notification on my iPhone, but not on my iPad

Dinesh Harjani

@christianselig I'm very sorry you had to go this route, Christian. Apollo is the app I have to now follow #Formula1 after we all flocked away from Twitter. I also check on Movie / TV news, check on the awesome work of other people at r/analog ... The people sitting high up in Reddit's building don't know what they're doing imo.

Jurgis Kirsakmens

@christianselig Oh, so sorry you have to go through this. Stay strong!

aoutaoutaout 🏳️‍🌈🏝️

@christianselig I hope all the messages of support to you are some consolation. Thank you for everything. I can’t wait to see your next creation.

anorax

@christianselig Reddit might as well close the whole API access system. I suspect they will eventually do this anyway.

äymm :damnified:

@christianselig Been a user since the very first beta build. I’m incredibly sad to see Apollo go. Wishing you all the success for your future endeavors!
So long, and thanks for all the fish

$amwel

@christianselig it’s been a pleasure using Apollo! Here’s wishing you success in your next venture

Paul Stockton

@christianselig thank you so much for an amazing app that just like Tweetbot and Twitterrifc will long live in the history books.

Michael Quinn

@christianselig Thanks for everything dude. You rock. No refunds I hope. Good luck with whatever is next.

George Hammerton 🙂

@christianselig sorry to see this. Twitter basically set an precedent for very ugly practice.

tw

@christianselig sorry this happened to you. Apollo was an amazing app. Wish you good luck on your future endeavours

Rafa

@christianselig sorry it had to go this way mate, what a fuck up. The way you dealt with all this has been inspiring though 💜

benzianium

@christianselig This whole thing is just sad and depressing... I really hope for a small miracle. But thank you for your great work!

Tim T—

@christianselig Thank you for a great app. On the plus side: I’m already excited for what you do next.

Christian Selig

I’ve had a lot of questions about Reddit’s planned AMA today and “What if they…”, so I added a section to the bottom of my post to answer that and thought I’d share it here too.

reddit.com/r/apolloapp/comment

Michael Santaly

@christianselig I’m waiting for this AMA so I can leave a comment about cancelling my premium

That Nonproductive Guy

@wonkothesane @christianselig canceled mine yesterday.
Saves me some $ and it frees up a space on my home screen, not to mention the ridiculous # of hours I spent in Apollo can now be used for more productive pursuits.

Michael Santaly

@vertana @nonproductive Yea, I say this but realistically I’m going to find new ways to waste the time. Mastodon is a good example

That Nonproductive Guy

@wonkothesane @vertana of course! But wasting time on Mastodon is "hanging with friends" - wasting time on Reddit is more like "Arguing with a screen" :)

Vertana

@wonkothesane I’ve been hooked ever since I figured out I can talk to and see Mastodon, Pixelfed, and Lemmy/kbin content all from the same place. And it all looks native.

Curious Badger

@christianselig once again, I’m so sorry it came to this. It’s such a shame.

I can’t wait to see how heavily moderated the AMA will be in 45 minutes.

Dominik

@curiousbadger @christianselig When is it supposed to start? 30 Minutes from now? I’m morbidly curious.

Thessnake03

@curiousbadger @christianselig still ain't live. Just another sign of how they run their business

Moby Duck

@christianselig really sad to see Apollo go, it’s an example of excellence on the iOS platform while the official offering is an example of user-hostile, poorly accessible corporate greed. Thanks for everything and good luck with whatever you do going forward! Also obligatory #fuckreddit, see all of you over at Lemmy!

Peter Curd

@christianselig I’m going to miss using Apollo. Not sure I’m going to miss Reddit as much. I’ve already told some of the subs I moderate that I’m leaving the platform. I’ve decided it’s Apollo or nothing! I look forward to your next app (I love Amplosion and Achoo)

Ville :apple_retro_logo:

@christianselig I feel so sorry for you, Apollo is a great app. I hope you release a new app that a lot for people are going to use daily!

Joshua

No one should take any bait offered by Reddit. Any compromises they may offer will undoubtedly be erased within a few months and we'll be back to the current situation.

Ben Weaver

@christianselig I’m going to really miss using Apollo. It’s been by far my most used iOS app since you released it. I consider it to be the benchmark for what an iOS app should be. I don’t use Reddit outside of Apollo at all, so after over 10 years of use I’ll be redacting all my content and deleting all my accounts in solidarity with Apollo. I’ve used your app since your first thread launching on /r/apple. Thanks for everything.

thatvirtualboy

@christianselig Out of curiousity Christian, are you going to still use Reddit yourself? Or has that bridge been burned?

gh0sti :pika:

@christianselig 8 years you helped their site grow and this is the thanks they give you. What a slap in the face.

Vertana

@christianselig To those that are deleting your accounts you can use this to fully wipe it before June 30th API change: github.com/j0be/PowerDeleteSui

Natha

@christianselig I mean, if Reddit/Spez comes forward with “Hey guys, we apologise, come back.”, the best move will clearly be the middle finger. Reddit don’t deserve Apollo, its dev and its users.

Either way, the upcoming AMA might be some kind of damage control. But I would really be surprised that anything productive comes out of it.

You did the right thing Christian. It’s time to move on. Wherever you go next, we will follow you.

NoToRedditAPIFees

@christianselig sad stuff. Looking forward to follow you here on Mastadon after deleting Reddit, man. You’ve really made Reddit enjoyable, more than the default app or website could ever do.

harleyofallthings

@christianselig Very curious about how much effort it would take to make "Appolo for Lemmy."

I understand they're two different platforms so it would be a lot but I think most of the effort is on the backend as it seems like lemmy is functionally similar. I'm not an ios developer myself so I could be completely wrong but I'm just curious.

However lemmy is a lot less popular so it may not be worth it.

Tane Piper ⁂

@christianselig @tchambers It's truly the end of the "Media Platform" era with this and Twitter - everyone who built their tools on someone else's platform will start to pull away, and the audiences will die away.

I've have people comment that federation won't work, but all the really popular reddits have to do is agree a path to create their own communities - there are plenty with over 100k users

Bee • New Move!

@christianselig What would be the best outcome from this AMA, if at all?

bdawg923

@christianselig I'm absolutely devastated. I hope reddit comes around, but if not then thank you for giving us the best Reddit app (and my most used app on my phone). Really sucks how this is ending.

Laowai

@christianselig I’ve just deleted all of my posts from my 8 years on Reddit. I hope others will be inspired to do the same. My account t will be deleted on June 30th.

Philipp

@christianselig I’m genuinely destroyed by the fact that my most used app will vanish this month. I know it’s nothing compared to your loss but man will I miss this experience. Fan since day 1.

Go Up
