Apollo will close down on June 30th. Reddit’s recent decisions and actions have unfortunately made it impossible for Apollo to continue. Thank you so, so much for all the support over the years. ❤️ reddit.com/r/apolloapp/comment

@christianselig Thank you! I’ve loved Apollo for a long time. I’m sorry it has to end like this for you.

Eddie Trujillo

@christianselig You made an amazing product, loved by millions. I’m sure most would follow you to the next one. Good luck to you.

Forst

@christianselig Thank you for working on this incredible app, was pretty much _the_ benchmark for what a great iOS app should look and function like. Best of luck in your new endeavours!

Fiala06

@christianselig Dang, thank you for all the great work over the years!! 😭

Torstein

@christianselig Please make one last update to Apollo before lights sre out and allow donations or fix the ultra button to allow new subscriptions. it currently crashes and quits the app. I want to subscribe to ultra to help you as much as i can.

lewis

@christianselig@mastodon.social Sorry this is happening to you & the other app devs, Christian. Apollo has been such a great, fun app to use, it's a big shame that Reddit has decided to burn up all their good will in one go

Sam (Satyajit) Grover

@christianselig Apollo has been wonderful. It will be sorely missed. I look forward to your future work whenever you're ready for that. Best wishes ❤️

@christianselig AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA

Vidit Bhargava

@christianselig It’s absolutely horrid how they’ve treated you.

Apollo is an amazing app. Gonna miss it. ☹️

Kyle Niemeyer

@christianselig welp, guess my (minimal) Reddit interactions will be dropping to zero use of Reddit. I only really started because of Apollo, and have no desire to be a user of Reddit otherwise

McWabbit

@christianselig Another major platform I will stop using after so many years.
Perhaps I'll stumble upon via some search machine articles, but not actively engaging in it.

Nerdwoman

@christianselig I’m sorry for you and for the rest of us, Thank you for your years of hard work. ❤️

Collin Allen

@christianselig Sad to see it go! Apollo is one of the best-designed apps on iOS — it feels right at home on the platform, has tons of options to customize to my liking, and performs really well. I look forward to what you make next!

James Thomson

@christianselig Very sorry to hear this, they've behaved terribly. Good luck for your future endeavours!

Timo Zimmermann

@christianselig Apollo was the one thing that made Reddit usable for me. Thanks for all the work you put in over the years!

Russel Prouse

@christianselig Man I’m so sorry to hear this. Good luck with whatever’s next.

Rafael Masoni

@christianselig This is devastating news. Thanks for making one of the best iOS apps ever. I hope you bring us another one soon.

René Fouquet

@christianselig Thanks for making Reddit usable. I’m going to delete my account on the same day.

:mastodonworld: Caleb

@christianselig
💔 I really hope redditors take the blackout seriously even if it may be beyond salvaging at this point

Cory

@christianselig Thank you for everything, Christian. I love Apollo and all of your work. Good luck to you. 🍻

FlyLikeAMouse

@christianselig I know this is echoing the sentiment of so many, but Apollo is Reddit as far as I’m concerned. Apollo goes, so do I. Life is too short to waste time on supporting the endeavours of horrible people.

Blitzen 🇺🇦

@christianselig If there was a “tip jar” of sorts I could donate to to offset anyone who does request a refund of their subscription, I would so so in a heartbeat. Please consider having one. I’ve already purchased your paid apps in the App Store.

IAmDarthMole

@christianselig Just wanted to say best of luck going forward, that your entire situation is horrible, that reddit sucks, and that I will be using it even less than before, as in not at all going forward.

Christian M. Grube 🐧

@christianselig A Client for Lemmy would be great 🥰.

Thank you for your work on Apollo and your friendly and great way of working with the community.
Have fun and stay healthy

Jake Carpenter

@christianselig amazing job at having the receipts. Forget Reddit and build your own mechanical keyboard community!

GalenFaidley

@christianselig Thanks for the great app! Sad to see it go. I look forward to seeing what you put your energy to next. Best of luck.

Niels K.

@christianselig Thanks for your work with Apollo. It was an awesome app. Without it I wouldn’t have continued using Reddit.

Tom Bridge

@christianselig Thank you for making an incredible product that is absolutely how I participate with the Reddit community. I know you didn't make this decision lightly, and I support you fully. Thank you for everything <3 I look forward to your next product!

Brandon Leon

@christianselig 😢 Thank you for an amazing Reddit experience. It was much better than Reddit could ever offer. Any chance for an Apollo fork for Lemmy? Call it Artemis?

Dennis Jay

@christianselig puh, my heart is kinda broken! 💔 That’s very sad news but more than understandable.

Hemi (Wellington, NZ)

@christianselig as a regular Apollo user, I’m gone from reddit on the 30th; in fact, joining Mastodon this week, was me already starting to make the move. See ya later reddit.

DELETED

@christianselig I left Twitter with Tweetbot and will do the same with Reddit. Thank you for the amazing app you’ve given us all this years.

Jack Roberts :computerfairies:

@christianselig It’s awful that it’s come to this, I certainly will miss Apollo. 😢

Evan K. Stone

@christianselig Your story with Apollo has been inspiring to me (especially since hearing it on Launched), and I'm shocked and dismayed that it is ending this way. 😞

Dave ✨

@christianselig I’m not a Reddit user but I’ve admired and respected seeing how you’ve built Apollo up over the years.

I know you’ll go into other things, and all, but I hope you can get some downtime after June 30th and some good time out for yourself and your partner.

Gene Cowan 🏳️‍🌈

@christianselig Thanks for making Reddit actually useful. I’m glad I subscribed to your app and I hope the balance of my subscription, as minuscule as it is, helps cushion what’s to come.

Leo Messy

@christianselig thank you for all of the work you did and for giving us the only usable Reddit interface of the last half decade. Now, uh, how about you just post some Apollo for iPad screenshots? I’m dying over here man.

Manuel

@christianselig Thank you for all the effort you put into this. It was a great application with wonderful VoiceOver support! The original reddit app is absolute crap, the same goes for the web experience.

Brandon Tyler

@christianselig You continue to be an inspiration to me even through all of this. It’s such sad news, but I am really looking forward to see what you do next. Thank you for making software that inspires, surprises, and delights.

Curious Badger

@christianselig Christian. I’m genuinely so sorry. Apollo was truly one of the sleekest apps iOS has seen (as well as Tweetbot/Ivory @paul @mark @tapbots and Things @things ). Will you leave the tip jar open so I can make a donation to help with the upcoming refund bill? I certainly won’t refund my yearly sub, just as I didn’t with Tapbots.

Markus Niemann

@christianselig Mann, was für eine riesige Katastrophe. Ich denke alles gute hat unweigerlich ein Ende. Damit stirbt reddit für mich. Danke Christian!

Vincent Leeuw

@christianselig Just wanted to thank you for everything you did with Apollo. It was definitely appreciated. 🫶

Callum

@christianselig Honestly can't believe this has happened :( Apollo was awesome, one of my favourite apps. I hope this isn't the last we have seen of your work!

Kevin Renskers

@christianselig Man, I’m so sorry for you. I have a question about something you wrote though.

“in a perfect world I think lowering the price by half and providing a three month transition period to the paid API would make the transition feasible for more developers, myself included”

Soooo 10 million a year would be feasible? With 50.000 paid subscribers that’s 200 per person per year. How is that a number you think is feasible?

Ben Gohlke

@christianselig very sad to see Apollo go. The app was amazing and you were an excellent steward of its quality and success.

Reddit’s conduct here seems appalling and there’s no excuse for it.

I’ve already deleted 1 of my 2 accounts and will delete the other one as soon as I confirm in Apollo that I do not want a refund for Ultra.

Amazing work and we all can’t wait to see what you do next.

Third spruce tree on the left

@jford @christianselig Lemmy is the big one - think 'community" instead of "subreddit", but same idea. Cmtys are relayed amongst lemmy instances, but it'll show you if a community is "homed" by a particular instance.

Only difference is communities have a 'home" instance. for example there's an AskLemmy on lemmy.ml. I can see that on lemmy.ca as AskLemmy@lemmy.ml.

Supposedly there's a way to sub to communities from mastodon but haven't figured that out yet.

Third spruce tree on the left

@jford @christianselig Other fediverse platforms like Kbin and Friendica can speak to Lemmy communities, threads and comments too.

𝕃𝕦𝕔𝕒𝕤 𝔸𝕥𝕜𝕚𝕟𝕤

@jford @christianselig Nvote.co seems to be trying to build a HN/Reddit style link sharing site on top of Nostr protocol

rats

@jford @christianselig There is lemmy, but i’ve been hearing enough about its flaws to not really want to recommend it (see https://mstdn.social/@feditips/110476830253102884 )

MishaMouse

@christianselig how about I just set up mastodon today for the first time, i went to follow you, and this is the first post i see. i’m devastated, which i’m sure is nothing compared to how you must feel. apollo is an amazing app and the only way i will consume reddit.

Renszi

@christianselig I have used your app many years with joy. Sadly this means I will also stop using Reddit on June 30th. Thanks for the wonderful app and looking forward to what else you might build in the future!

DELETED

@christianselig I was never an active Reddit user, but still sadly deleted Apollo from my phone this afternoon in solidarity.

Patrick Mifsud

@christianselig so sorry to hear, thank you for making Apollo and all your hard work on building an amazing app.

davd

@christianselig Sorry to hear that but I feel it's the right decision. Thanks for your awesome work. For me, Reddit will go in the trash can just like Twitter did...

Jack Cunningham

@christianselig I want you to know that we are here, we love your work, and (when you’ve gotten the chance to take a breather for a minute) we’d love to see what you build next.
(And loving Pixel Pals btw)

Leorhall

@christianselig I’m so sorry to hear the app is shutting down. I subscribed to it last year, and it has been a joy to use! I look forward to seeing what future projects you come up with. 🙏 #ApolloApp #redditapi

nicola isabelle

@christianselig Thank you for an amazing app, Christian. Wishing you well.

Serena 🫘

@christianselig thank you for working so hard to give us a wonderful experience for so many years. Apollo will be missed and we all feel so fortunate to have been a part of it.

Missy Hoppe

@tristan @christianselig This is sad. I thought I read somewhere, though, that Redit was making exceptions for apps which focused on accessibility? No idea if that was accurate or not, though.

Luke Nelson

I’m absolutely gutted for @christianselig #Apollo is a beautiful, funny and all round fantastic app. I’m so disappointed that it has to end like this.

Brian Morrison II :gopher:

@christianselig I haven’t been an Apollo user for some time but so sad to hear what’s happening. Wishing you all the best

robtain

@christianselig This is so unfortunate. I was really hoping for an 11th hour change of heart on the part of Reddit. Your app is great – so much better than the official app. I’m not sure how active I will continue to be on Reddit as a result. I’m so happy to see the level of support for third party developers in this situation, but very sad to see you have to shut Apollo down.

Isak

@christianselig It feels surreal that this is actually happening. Apollo has been a part of my daily life for so many years.

I suspect millions of reddits most active users will be leaving the platform.

You’ve brought an enormous amount of joy to people across the world over the years. Thank you.

Adam 🐭

@christianselig Sending a not at all weird and sweaty internet hug.

Your community engagement made Apollo, and your care and attention to detail transformed Reddit into an amazing experience; in doing so you made a significant part of my time online better for 8 years.

I hope you’re able to enjoy well-earned break with loved ones, and that you take time to bask in all you’ve learned and accomplished.

Thank you, Christian ❤️ I can’t wait to see what’s next!

bee :v_trans:

@christianselig end of an era. I’m already getting off Reddit and looking for alternatives, no need to wait until the end of the month

GroguTheGreen

@christianselig this whole situation is BS. I have loved using Apollo all of these years and is the only way I even browse Reddit on IOS. Thanks for all your hard work Christian.

FlyinPancake

@christianselig What a bunch of dicks... I've been your happy customer ever since I switched to iOS. I guess we can't have nice things anymore...

Todd Thomas :ivory_logo:

@christianselig thank you so much for making Reddit useable. The end of Apollo will be the end of me using Reddit. Already looking forward to your next great app, whatever it may be.

Justin Mabee

@christianselig I will be off Reddit as long as Apollo is not available. As long as I've been on Reddit, I've been using Apollo. It's had a permanent spot in the bottom 4 of my phone since day 1

Kyle Mikolajczyk

@christianselig thanks for everything. I bought the blue alien shirt from your store a number of years back, people always used to compliment it. I don’t wear it much these days as it’s one of my few articles of clothing that has a special place in my heart. I’ll wear it on the 12th to honor your work all these years, and I’ll keep it hanging in my closet afterwards as a memory. Seriously, thank you. As a software developer I had always looks up to you and your design as the gold standard. I look forward to what you work on next. Also, I don’t intend to ever use Reddit again, you are the one that made Reddit- Reddit.

wicked82

@christianselig This sucks, #Apollo was legit the only #Reddit app worth a damn after Reddit ruined Alien Blue. Big🖕to Reddit for this. Haven’t been on Reddit since this shit was announced and I have no intention on ever returning… This feels like the Digg debacle all over again 🙄.

Please consider making an iOS app for #lemmy

Andy

@wicked82 @christianselig I was an Alien Blue user and remember that debacle. I can’t believe the terrible official app shares any DNA with it. I’ve learnt my lesson now. I don’t trust #Reddit and will be deleting my account.

I remember Digg too. Maybe I’ll check on Slashdot (I probably won’t).

wicked82

@howrandom @christianselig Alien Blue was my go to, then #Reddit came along and fucked that up. I remember giving it a try after the rebrand and quickly noped the fuck out after thinking “wtf is this shit?!”

Yeah it seems Reddit has forgotten how it became so popular. If people dumped Digg over some BS I don’t think they’ll have an issue ditching Reddit either. It might not all happen at once but more of a slow bleed 🤷🏻‍♀️. Only time will tell. Only reason I will be returning to Reddit is to delete my account. ✌️ out Reddit.

Andy

@wicked82 @christianselig I only stuck around after Alien Blue because of the 3 or 4 years of premium we got. The website was still usable then, especially without ads.

I do hope Reddit and Twitter implode in the not too distant future. 🤞

Denis Andrašec

@christianselig That is so sad to hear! Apollo is one of those apps I use daily, iOS won't be the same without it. 🥲 Thank you for creating it and all the best to you Christian!

James

@christianselig absolutely awful! Thank you so much for Apollo and I look forward to fielding whatever you do in the future.

Francis Neftalí

@christianselig I can't believe what Reddit is doing to the community. So sad that a great page becomes a greedy company.

Aaron is at #RubyConf!

@christianselig 💙💜💚💛❤️💙💜💚❤️💛💙💜💚❤️

If there's any silver lining to this cloud, it's that your great app design sensibilities may find their way to new places in the future.

Unit

@christianselig Legitimately saddened by this news, not just for Christian, but for all the fantastic developers that put so much effort into bringing amazing apps across devices for a platform that has jumped on the money-grubbing bandwagon. For me, Apollo is Reddit. 30th June, I’m out of there.

Ivan Pavlov

@christianselig I really hate the way they treated you, Christian. I really hope that your next project will be even better and bigger. Good luck! 👍

Jared

@christianselig o7. Thank you for all of the hard work over the years. Appreciate everything you’ve done over the years. Apollo has been the only way I could consume Reddit sanely.

My family loves Pixel Pals, and we will be looking forward to your next adventure!

Preston Haynes

@christianselig thank you for creating the best way to access Reddit. It is truly terrible they decided to go down this route and even spread lies about you. I hope good things come for you on whatever you do next ❤️

Go Up
