Apollo will close down on June 30th. Reddit’s recent decisions and actions have unfortunately made it impossible for Apollo to continue. Thank you so, so much for all the support over the years. ❤️ reddit.com/r/apolloapp/comment

@christianselig Thank you for all your work on Apollo, Christian. I've been using your app pretty much since the beginning, and it has been a pleasure.

I canceled my Reddit Premium sub today and let the mods know exactly why. Hopefully they reverse their decision, but I doubt they will.

Mark Darbyshire

@christianselig Thanks for the post. I was already planning to delete my Reddit account. Now seemed the perfect time to follow through, not that I've ever been a regular or prolific user.

Jacob

@christianselig what a horrible several months for third-party apps. Wishing you all the best, and thank you so much for the amazing apps you’ve given us over the years <3

Michael

@christianselig nooooooo 😭😭😭

Thank you for all your hard work over the years. Looking forward to what’s coming next!

David Levine

@christianselig I really appreciate the thoughtful Reddit post. I’m so sorry this is happening to you. I enjoyed using Apollo and will miss it dearly when I’m forced to use the first party Reddit app. Thank you for providing a first class Reddit experience. I wish you well on Pixel Pals and any future endeavors.

Paul

@christianselig it’s incredible how Reddit handled this whole situation. I loved Apollo and it’s sad to see it go away like that but in the end it’s their loss. What a way for them to Digg their own grave.

Hasan Ali

@christianselig Thank you for all the love you put into building Apollo! In all honesty, Apollo is the reason I still use Reddit and it’s easily one of my favorite apps. It’s one of the only app that’s always been on my Home Screen. Thank you and best of luck with what you decide to do next ❤️

P.s. I’m secretly hoping it’s Mastodon client

@christianselig

I loved Apollo ❤️. I am so sorry to here this Christian. Hope the community can continue to support you with Pixel Pals and any other future apps!

Steve

@christianselig I won’t be requesting a refund from Apple, though I think my annual renewal is in July anyway unfortunately. Once I buy the 15 with dynamic island, I’ll support you again through Pixel Pals. Hope you and your girlfriend have some nice celebrations planned and that she has a lovely 30th birthday

@christianselig

Someone suggested on Metafilter... you could keep everything as-is (including Apollo subscriptions) and make the app available to the public to install.

But on first run, have them go get their own reddit API key (maybe even automate it). That way, you're not on the hook for back-end costs. You could also add screens to give users an estimate of their API cost (in case there's no free API tier).

If the user registers their API keys on your server, you could also make server-side calls on their behalf and keep notifications/etc. alive.

Crowdsourced API keys 😃

@christianselig Thanks so much for maning the app!

So sorry they’re treating you like this.

Oliver Kamer

@christianselig Sad but understandable. Looking forward to use whatever you do next.

Dan Hedley

@christianselig Well that's a crying shame. Thank you for making the best Reddit client. It was fun while it lasted.

Weiran Zhang

@christianselig really sorry to hear that 💔. I think we all naively thought with Reddit it wouldn’t happen like this.

I didn’t get on the TestFlight but been an Ultra user since day 1 and I’ve loved using Reddit because of your app. It’s been an inspiration for some of my apps, especially my Hacker News app Hackers. I think it really set the standard for how we interact with threaded messages on iOS.

Farid El Nasire

@christianselig I wasn't a user of your app (I try not to keep social media apps on my phone), but as a fellow (indie) developer I'm really sorry. Good thing you recorded those calls!

Vertana

@christianselig @Gargron That is truly awful news and I’m sorry Reddit has treated you poorly especially in public. Thanks for all you’ve done!

If you are considering at all count me in the crowd who would love for Apollo to be a fediverse client for Lemmy, kbin, etc. Or perhaps consider open sourcing it so others can take that challenge on.

Stuart Armley-Jones

@christianselig I'm truly gutted to hear about the impending closure of Apollo. This move from Reddit is troubling - indicative of a disconcerting trend where small developers and the spirit of open internet are being stifled.

I suppose the essential question is whether Reddit can maintain its appeal to its user base in the face of these changes, or if this might open up a vacuum for a new platform to rise and succeed where others have faltered.

Antillian

@christianselig Very sorry to hear. Thank you for all your hard work and dedication to Apollo!

J.I. Vicuña

@christianselig thanks for all the time with this.

ION: The App Store (Chile) is showing a knockoff of Pixel Pals on top when doing a search. Maybe it’s time to check with the App Store team?

Patrick McConnell

@christianselig I guess I’m done with Reddit then. Thanks for the enjoyable ride.

Kurt Schwind

@christianselig Sorry to see the best way to interact with #reddit going away. #Apollo is a phenomenal app. Wish they'd offer to purchase it from you if they aren't going to allow reasonable API pricing.

🇫🇷 Ch0wW

@christianselig Such a shame :( ...

Well, let's all leave Reddit, and support Lemmy while we're at it...

Dominik Dröscher

@christianselig Thank you for actually making me enjoy Reddit for short while. ♥️

Evan Deaubl

@christianselig Sucks that it had to end this way, but thanks for pouring your heart into Apollo for all these years.

eugenekim

@christianselig For the most part it seems that Steve is basically another Elon, spouting things based on feelings, not fact, and that all the people around him were compensating. Now that Steve has the main mic and realizing all the compensation that was happening around him, he’s pissed and muzzling everyone else, now free to burn as many bridges as he can.

eugenekim

@christianselig Enjoyed Apollo while it lasted, sometimes a little too much, and probably contributed to your “inefficient” usage. Hope you have a nice long rest and can’t wait to hear about what you do next!

Philipp

@christianselig fuck. Them. I’m so sorry to hear this, mate. You’ve been so nice about all of this.

Josh Wold

@christianselig I can’t believe what they’re doing. So thankful you recorded it. I’m seriously considering whether it’s time to move on from Reddit entirely.

Mason

@christianselig thank you for all your work! Apollo has been a staple on my home screen for years. So sorry about the circumstances surrounding all of this…

lucas :baner:

@christianselig I’m sorry. Thank you for the many years of terrific development. Apollo is firmly in the hall of fame.

NorcalPM ☑️ :verified_coffee:

@christianselig Thank you for producing and supporting such a great app! Apollo is easily my most used app on my iPad. So long, Reddit.

Please consider making another version that supports Lemmy - I will happily purchase it.

John ✅

@christianselig Eugh this is shite news. Thanks for the great app!

Reddit is a pretty pish experience without Apollo. At least I'll have a lot more spare time now 😅

Alireza

@christianselig Best of luck in all of your future projects.

Aaron Tees

@christianselig What a shame. Thank you for all your hard work over the years.

Kyle

@christianselig It’s disappointing it came to this, but thank you for your work!

Dale Price

@christianselig For all their talk of not wanting to be like Twitter, the reddit leadership sure come across as Elon-level scumbags. Sad to see Apollo go but can’t say I’ll miss reddit – your app made it worth using for me

Josh Hrach

@christianselig Apollo is one of the best apps I've ever used. Thank you for all of the hard work you've put into it over the years. You're a great developer. Looking forward to whatever apps you spend your time perfecting in the future.

RevJeber

@christianselig
Anyone closing their paid Apollo accounts, please don't ask for reimbursements if you can afford to.

pxl

@christianselig huge thanks for the time we got with Apollo. Any chance you'd like to have a crack at making a Lemmy client?

Aziz Bawany

@christianselig Thank you for all your efforts and making a great app. The only reason I got on Reddit was thanks to 3rd party apps. I see not reason to continue on the platform. Wishing nothing but success and some much needed mental health rest in the future.

Bryan Irace

@christianselig An incredible app and a core part of how I experience the Internet. Just brutal. You should be super proud of the legacy, you deserve so much better.

Shahrouz Tavakoli

@christianselig With it goes my use of Reddit. Thanks for putting so much work into an incredible app. Can’t wait to support whatever you make next.

Pete Carr

@christianselig loved using Apollo. Going to miss it. Fuck those guys who did this. Big love to you 💜

Eshu Marneedi

@christianselig I am so, so sorry Christian. We’re losing an amazing app made by an amazing person thanks to Reddit’s fucking bullshit.

Chris Masterson

@christianselig Can’t imagine how hard this is. So so sorry.

David Stone

@christianselig Apollo has been front and center on my home screen for years. Thank you for making such an amazing app and I look forward to seeing what you do next (after watching Ted Lasso again, of course). ❤️

Matt Edwards 🚴‍♂️

@christianselig 😫💔

Nobody wants to work this way. I’m so sorry. Apollo was an AMAZING app, as evidenced by Apple just this week onstage at WWDC.

Really looking forward to what you do next! (Downloading Pixel Pals now!)

Stephen

@christianselig I’ve used Apollo for years. It’s why I started using Reddit and why I’ll stop using it when Apollo is gone. Thank you for this amazing app

minimlr

@christianselig This is so sad to hear. Just like Twitter, Reddit will become irrelevant to a lot of people without quality 3rd party apps like Apollo.

jmoneygrip

@christianselig can you add a button as an option to delete the logged in Reddit account in the final Apollo build? 😀

Phil :ivory_elephant:

@christianselig Thank you for everything. I wish all the best for the next. <3

grovecastle

@christianselig The slander part is ridiculous! In the call it's so obvious that the situation is cleared up. It's chilling, really!

ana

@christianselig wow, Christian, sending you good thoughts and vibes! End of a chapter, but excited for what you do next💞 I’m still all in on Pixel Pals

M.Coutts 

@christianselig this has made me so sad. Subscription pricing and more has become a fact of life lately but to be priced out an underhanded and frankly harsh way is killing indie developers. Client based app development seems to becoming a thing of the past.

Jay Lanagan

@christianselig I really enjoyed being a part of the Apollo community and doing what I can to support you as a individual app developer. Apollo changed my reddit experience for the better. Like others, I’ll be leaving reddit as well. Corporations need to earn to succeed, I get that, but the greed to snuff out the little guy will be their undoing. Thanks for making an app that wasted so so so so much of my time. 🤣 Good luck out there!

Say "No!" to IoT cybernetics

@christianselig It's a goddamn shame what they've done and I hope that you've got other sources of revenue to supplant your income.

That being said, what about repurposing Apollo for Lemmy?

Greysen Paige

@christianselig Ugh this is the worst news. This app was the single biggest thing that pulled me back to iOS from Android. I'm so sorry it's gone this way. Thank you for this.

I posted this to twitter, but echoing it here:

How can I make sure I don't get a refund? You owe me nothing. You provided a service that was worth far more than its cost to me for years. Thank you for building and growing this. I'll watch to see what you do next and how I can support it.

Richard

@christianselig I’m so sorry. Apollo is one of my favorite apps ever and I’m sad to see it go. Thank you so much for all your hard work. You’re the gold standard when it comes to developers. I’ll support you in whatever the future holds for you.

arsatius

@christianselig I’m really sorry for you. Thank you for your great work.❤️

Matt

@christianselig Sorry to here and best of luck moving forward. I winced a little every time I saw Apollo mentioned in the WWDC keynote. If that didn’t show Reddit they were making a huge mistake I don’t know what would.

I hope like with Twitter, this creates a tipping point that leads to a new, better, network where Apollo can rise and live again… and Reddit crashes and burns.

Jens

@christianselig 6 years and 8 month ago I created a Reddit account specifically because of Apollo and on June 30th I will go done with Apollo. It makes me sad that one of the best apps on the AppStore (Apple seems to think so to) will just vanish because of greed and dishonesty.

It‘s been a great ride Christian 🫡

[unowned RobWhitaker]

@christianselig A great thorough write up. I’m really sorry to hear what you’ve been going through. All the best.

weltraumkojote

@christianselig Damn! Thanks for the good times. Totally understandable though, but still: 😭 😭 😭

Maybe…

Phil :ivory_elephant:

@cmconseils Ce AMA va être en mode damage control tout naze…

Eric Beavers

@christianselig I’ll be doing my small part by _not_ requesting a refund.

Apollo is beautiful. I hate that so many users will be denied a beautiful portal to Reddit.

I am seeking other ways to find Reddit-type connections esp. for cities and other real local communities. I hope anyone with ideas will share! #chattanooga

Lars

@christianselig I have been with Apollo since day one. This is absolutely heartbreaking. Not just as a Reddit user, but as someone who can empathize with all the hard work you’ve put into Apollo just to see it taken away. You are an amazing developer and you are a huge reason as to why I am now going to school for software development. I hope to follow your career and the amazing work you do for years to come. Keep being awesome.

Michael Goodman

@christianselig What a sad day. Thank you for creating a brilliant app and community 🙏🏼

Stefan Arentz

@christianselig thank you for pouring so much love and energy and attention not only in an amazing app but also in a community that sprouted around it. I’m eager to see what you will ship next!

Arek Holko

@christianselig What an emotional rollercoaster! I’m so sad that you have to close it down but hopeful for a better, more independent, future for you. ❤️

Twalzer

@christianselig Ok. No more Reddit for me, then. More time outdoors.

_raygervais

@christianselig I'm so sorry that you've had to go through all this, more so that it's beyond your control now.

Apollo was one of the few apps I ever recommened to *anyone* who was on iOS; I was one of the dreamers hoping a Desktop client would show up one April Fool's day. If there is any way the community can help, please let us know.

Mario Sangiorgio

@christianselig sad news 😞

Thanks for all the work you put into Apollo. It will be missed

David Brownman

@christianselig really sorry to hear that. I understand and wish they had given you another option.

Thank you for all you've done!

KaiEkkrin

@christianselig 😢 I’ve been a happy Apollo user for a couple of years. Thank you for having made the best Reddit client, it’s so sad they decided to nuke the ecosystem

Gregory Burns

@christianselig Thank you for many years of such a useful and delightful app 🙏

jblewitt

@christianselig So sorry to hear this! Your work has been incredible and inspiring (one day I’ll learn Swift properly)! Do you know what you plan to do next?

Francis Chary

@christianselig Christian, I am so sorry that it has come to this. You deserve so much better, and have created something of true beauty in Apollo. I’m going to miss it.

Jackson

@christianselig This whole situation sucks. Sorry to hear it ended up this way for you.

Thanks so much for building and developing such a great app.

Go Up
