Apollo will close down on June 30th. Reddit’s recent decisions and actions have unfortunately made it impossible for Apollo to continue. Thank you so, so much for all the support over the years. ❤️ reddit.com/r/apolloapp/comment

@christianselig man… end of an era. Again, kudos to how well you've handled this. Thanks for such a great app.

Marcus

@christianselig that’s so sad. I‘m pretty angry at Reddit.

Kyle Reddoch

@christianselig This is sadden to hear bud! Truly one of the best apps out there. 😭

Andrew Loverock

@christianselig If Apollo goes, so does my Reddit account. Apollo is my Reddit.

Best of luck Christian! You’re a great dev!

Khaos Tian

@christianselig ❤️ thanks for being awesome all these years

DELETED

@christianselig so sorry Christian, hope you’re doing ok ❤️

mattd

@christianselig Thank you Christian for creating one of the best apps in the whole App Store, I was subscribed for years now and it's really unfortunate to see it end :0540:

So Long Reddit, and Thanks for All the Fish

Chancerubbage

@christianselig @flargh Really they should have simply offered to buy you out.

People used your app simply because it was better, not because it was anathema to their business plans.

Clicking a link going to Reddit, and being slapped in the face with l their constant begging to use ‘THEIR’ app was insulting, and too little to late.

Can I extract my account info from Apollo? I don’t know how to ‘log in’ to Reddit otherwise. And it’s still almost always read only for me anyway, I think.

@christianselig Apollo was probably my most used app ever directly after Tweetbot. So sad to see my two favorite apps disappear within 6 months, just because those big companies are so mismanaged. This will greatly reduce my Reddit usage, even though they probably won't care. I was so looking forward to the iPad version :( Whatever comes next, I wish you all the best.

@christianselig @queenslight Noooooooo! What about accessibility-focused apps? Me, as a blind person use Apollo for Reddit as the website and app is unusable! I think that if many blind people testify they use Apollo, Reddit can minimize costs.

Trenton Matthews

@Nuno @christianselig Not sure if you saw the article from the verge, any Reddit application that is meant to be ‘accessible’ in nature, is exempt from said API price pump. With that being said though, how many Reddit apps are ‘blind specific’ besides Dystopia?

theverge.com/2023/6/7/23752804

Trenton Matthews

@Nuno @christianselig Looks like on the Mac side of things, Dystopia will be the only accessible program, besides using the web site. Considering that ‘Bacon Reader’ is monetized.
All other accessible apps for Reddit(which ya mentioned) earlier, are Windows only.

Yes there’s the Windows VM route sure, but it shouldn’t be a requirement.

Chuck Yoder

@christianselig heartbroken! Thank you for such a great experience with the Apollo app for all these years.

owen monsma

@christianselig this is incredibly sad news, you've done amazing work on Apollo

Christine Romero :funwheel:

@christianselig This is so sad to hear. I would have paid more to keep using it. Oh well. I guess I just won't be on reddit anymore

alexmak

@christianselig @tsybulin Oh no. I am so sorry to hear that - because it’s an obvious loss to you, and to your users. I really hope reddit reconsiders.

Sean Murray

@christianselig So bummed to hear this. If Reddit were to come to their senses in the next few weeks, would you reconsider, or are you just ready to just move on at this point?

Kevin Herrera

@christianselig Thank you for Apollo, Christian. Hopefully the wildfires do not affect you and you are able to recharge soon. Selfishly, I am wishing that an opportunity presents itself to convert Apollo into a Lemmy client.

alexmak

@christianselig And thank you for the great app and many years of enjoyable user experience.

Rob

@christianselig While I was only a very light user, I’m feeling sad about this. It’s the Twitter story all over again. For me this means Reddit dies on June 30. I won’t miss that platform much, but for you the pain must be insane.

Apollo was one of the best iOS Apps ever made. Thank you for creating and sharing it!

I hope this can also be the beginning of something new and that someday there will be a new App from you to enjoy (digital pets are not my thing).

Take care!

Aaron MacNeil

@christianselig welp I guess I won’t be browsing Reddit any longer. Apollo truly changed how much I used Reddit. Best of luck with your next endeavor!

Casey Kelley

@christianselig Do you have a tip-jar that doesn't go through Apple's 30%?

Dan Schimpf

@christianselig I’m so sorry to hear about this. Apollo is one of my favorite apps of all time and Reddit’s treatment of you is despicable. I hope you can find some peace after all of this and I will look forward to your next venture.

ljpuk

@christianselig thank you for all of your efforts in making the app, I’ll no longer be using Reddit.

Manny 🏳️‍🌈 🇵🇷

@christianselig I'm so sorry. Apollo made reddit tolerable. I'll be deleting my account at the end of the month.

Mike

@sporedrive yep. Just filed the form to get all my Reddit data for my entire time there (10+ years) and once I have that, I’ll be deleting my account.

Manny 🏳️‍🌈 🇵🇷

@neimoyer They have an AMA tomorrow. I'm gonna wait to see if they about face but likely deleting at end of month.

Mike

@sporedrive given their disingenuous reasonings for the API pricing and accusing Apollo of “threatening” them, and his posting of the audio of that call (I fucking love having receipts!!!), I can’t see how they’d about face and still expect people to trust them. ☹️

Manuel Carlos

@christianselig ❤️ ❤️ Sorry. This is the worst 🤦‍♂️

Matt Thomas

@christianselig thank you for everything. The app is a delight and I’m glad you went out with shoutouts in one of the greatest WWDC keynotes.

Dustin Svehlak

@christianselig I'm sure you're gonna hear this a lot but I had just started using Apollo and it made the Reddit experience palatable for me. Much like when Twitter did the same to @tapbots earlier this year, I think this will be the end of my time on Reddit and I plan to delete my account later this month. Best of luck with your next endeavor!

Hemera :nixos: :ms_snow_leopard: @NFC24

@christianselig Thanks for having made Apollo! I was a happy user & subscriber.

Now that the project is done & gone, do you think you could open-source it? That way others may be able to profit from all the work and things you've learned!

parkr

@christianselig Very well-put, and very fair. Wishing you all the best for the future!

Sean Bala

@christianselig I'm really sorry to hear that - thank you for sharing your gifts and talents with the Reddit community. Please come and work on the #Fediverse - there are so many great applications that could use the professional touch and development that these kind of apps could bring. I really feel like being here (on #Mastodon and others) is being part of something new and exciting in the future of the internet!

Chris Ingram

@christianselig I’m sad. Thank you for putting together the best Reddit app!

Alberto

@christianselig I am so sorry to hear that. Thank you for your wonderful app. I will delete my Reddit account on the same day Apollo closes down.

zmknox

@christianselig 🧡Thanks for making such a great app! So sad it has come to this

Troy

@christianselig What's the best way to make sure you keep the remaining portion of my sub? I don't want a refund of any kind but realize it's probably something you'll be forced to do.

I did just sub to pixel pays so maybe that makes up for it? Anyways that's for the great app and good luck on whatever you end up doing next!

SteveC

@christianselig 😢 nothing else you could do. Best of luck with what comes next.

Steve 🇨🇦🇺🇦

@christianselig Have you posted this somewhere other than reddit? Because the face eating leopards might actually eat your face a second time.

Kurt

@christianselig So sorry to hear. Wishing you the best. ❤️

Dylan Sallee

@christianselig Hey Christian - probably just a bug, but I can’t see the post when I’m logged in to the Reddit interface. Probably nothing, but I thought I’d mention it because the Reddit admins are slimy bastards.

Dylan Sallee

@christianselig IMPORTANT - yeah, as far as I can tell, your post is 100% getting suppressed. I can see it as the number one post on /r/all, but when I login, it disappears.

DELETED

@christianselig Well, that sucks.

The Apollo app actually made it possible for me to create an account on Reddit a year or so ago and genuinely enjoy the experience. I wish you luck in whatever you end up doing next, whether or not it's apps.

DELETED

@christianselig Get wrecked, Reddit. Thanks for the years.

deemy

@christianselig thank you for making one of the consistently best apps I use almost every day.

Jani

@christianselig Thank you for making Apollo in the first place.

basile

@christianselig sad news :( I new Reddit, but really discovered it and used it via Apollo. Thanks for this great app.

Davey Craney

@christianselig heartbreaking 💔 Thanks for all the good times. Apollo *is* Reddit to me, and without it I have no interest in supporting them. Especially with how appallingly they’ve dealt with this situation.

Gustavo Poscidonio

@christianselig fuck. Fuck them. Just... fuck.

You're a freakin gem homie. Can't wait to see what you do next. You've got a magic touch.

Nefarious Aryq

@christianselig This sucks and I’m sorry it’s happening to you. Whatever you do next, if it’s in the public realm, know TONS of people will follow.

Martin Gratzer

@christianselig I will miss Apollo, and my Reddit usage will drop a lot. Thank you for this gem of an app!

Marco Carini

@christianselig shit, thank you for all your hard work over the years. Can’t wait to see what’s next

Mike

@christianselig damn. Well until then you have served well and I’m a paying customer.

Mihael Cholakov

@christianselig well, that’s a sad day. Apollo has been my #1 most used app for years now. You don’t deserve what Reddit did to you. I wish you all the best in your feature endeavors, Christian.

Mike

@christianselig I’ll give you my Twitter funds if it helps. Trust you way more.

DELETED

@christianselig wow. i'm so that sorry that it has come to this. i recall back before launch when "apollo" was like a mythical beast, only spoken of in hushed whispers, & always about how incredible it was and how it would change everything. well, it lived up to the hype and then some.

your app has been one of the best apps on my phone for years. not best reddit app. not best social media app. best app, full stop.

at this point, apollo *IS* reddit to me. come june 30, i just won't use reddit.

Charlie Fish

@christianselig So sad. I was a relatively new user to Apollo. But it was a truly delightful experience compared to the 1st party app.

Your professionalism and transparency throughout this is absolutely inspirational.

Wishing you the best. ❤️

Chris Kolbu

@christianselig Sorry this happened. Glad you recorded all your calls and provided receipts that make it impossible for them to spin this into Reddit somehow being the injured party here.

Deryck Hodge

@christianselig No! So sorry to hear, but do understand. Thank you for such an awesome app.

I don’t see myself really engaging on Reddit much after this.

Romolo Sorrentino

@christianselig I guess I will try Lemmy, and hopefully wait for a good client for them... Looks like the Fediverse is a better solution

TonyQuest

@christianselig Apollo and Tweetbot were my 2 most used iOS apps during the pandemic. Thank you for everything. 🙏🏼

danielhayter

@christianselig Gutted! Best of luck for whatever comes next.

David Zumini

@christianselig So sorry it's come to this. You made an amazing app and frankly deserved a hell of a lot better than this from reddit.

Matt Bonney

@christianselig Just terrible. I'm so sorry, but I look forward to following what you do next

Make Nazis Dead Again

@christianselig Good luck. Thanks for creating something that was a true joy to use. iOS and the Internet writ large are worse off because of this.

Richard Wilson

@christianselig Bye bye reddit on June 30th, its been fun but I just don't have time for you if you are going to do things like this

Simon 🌻

@christianselig Really sorry to hear this news Christian. As a ultra supporter, thank you.
I will be cancelling my #Reddit account on the 30th June.

Roddy :swift:

@christianselig I’m so sorry to hear that Christian 💙

Roddy :swift:

@christianselig Apollo was Reddit to me. Thank you for creating such an incredible app!

Connor McDonald

@christianselig So sorry man. I really appreciate all the work you've done.

Tom Declat

@christianselig I’ll be leaving reddit the day Apollo goes! Appreciate all the hard work mate, was an incredible app. Looking forward to supporting your future apps!

Scott

@christianselig Apollo is easily my most used app of all time. This fucking sucks.

But then again, Reddit is long past its prime and I'm excited to see what you build next. Good luck.

Tim Chaten

@christianselig so sad to hear :( - freaking loved this app - cool to see Apple feature you in the WWDC keynote

Robert Bradl

@christianselig It makes me really sad to see this. I have been using Apollo for almost the entire time I have been using Reddit. It was one of my most used apps and for me there is no Reddit without Apollo. It’s been a fun time. Thank you for creating something so amazing.

Mike Li

@christianselig That’s very sad to hear. Wish there were a “Mastodon” version of Reddit..

rellik moo

@29decibel

lemmy sort of fits in that space

not a replacement of course, just a style similarity

Stephen Smith

@29decibel @christianselig There is actually, the activitypub protocol underlying Mastodon/Pixelfed is being extended to include groups, which is what Lemmy uses to power it's communities (subreddits). Lemmy communities are followable from Mastodon just like an account, and Bonfire, another activitypub-based project is also implementing groups aiming to be compatible with Lemmy, Mastodon, and other activitypub projects that support groups such as Guppe & Mobilizon.

Stephen Smith

@29decibel @christianselig I think Lemmy is the only project that currently ships a reddit-like UI for activitypub groups though, and imo they are in dire need of better UX in their app, or an alternate app that has more polish...

kristian
@christianselig that’s such a shame, but not surprising. Apollo’s been amazing over the years, you can be rightfully proud of what you achieved with it (I know that won’t pay the bills, but still…)

Not being able to use third party apps (specifically Apollo, and Relay on Android) is going to kill my Reddit use I think. Maybe that’s not a bad thing.
Chris 🦈

@christianselig for years I used Apollo because of its great user experience (free of ads!). It was my Reddit app. I left Reddit after they announced the change recently and I realised I would no longer be able to enjoy that place with Apollo. I hope you find a new inspiration (maybe a Mastodon app?) 💙

Fedicat :mastodon:

@christianselig I’m legit so sad 😢 I love Apollo and use it every single day. Can’t imagine Reddit without it. This sucks, but nos importantly I hope you’re doing well and hope you’ll be able to jump to a new project maybe ❤️ thanks for all the work you did ❤️

tarasis

@christianselig Ridiculous & my condolences. Particularly after all the featuring by Apple in WWDC. 🤦🤬

Feels like Reddit are just burning all the bridges they can.

Daniel Zenzes

@christianselig I will miss Apollo and Reddit (will not use Reddit without your app). Thanks for this wonderful piece of software.
