Apollo will close down on June 30th. Reddit’s recent decisions and actions have unfortunately made it impossible for Apollo to continue. Thank you so, so much for all the support over the years. ❤️ reddit.com/r/apolloapp/comment

@christianselig you rock! Thanks for all the work and one of the best ios apps!

Juan Arzola

@christianselig 😢 an inspiring app and I am sad to see it go. Thank you for all the hard work you put into it. reddit.com is not a place I’ll visit or have an account in anymore.

Michael Biggs

@christianselig I’m sorry this happened. I hope you can consider being featured at #WWDC23 so prominently as a great send off to a great app.

Sarah A

@michael @christianselig ?apollo was the only app I used for about maybe the last 4-5 months. bought the subscription a few months before this disaster. I thought that reddit said apollo were exempt from the API costs, I guess not. Shame as there were a lot of communities I kept in touch with. I don't want a refund, however I do want something which will keep me in touch with those communities again. Too bad I'll never find such a thing besides #apollo.

Tim Johnsen

@christianselig oh my god, this is horrible. I'm so sorry man.

Joey Gibson :fez:

@christianselig I've been using Apollo since you first released it, and have been a happy paid user. I'm angry about how shitty Reddit "leadership” is being, and while I know it won't make a difference, the sub that I mod is going dark with the thousands of others in support.

Andy

@christianselig This fucking sucks. I was a beta tester for your very first TestFlight back in 2015 and it’s been so amazing to see what you’ve done with Apollo since. Looking forward to whatever’s next and I’ll be there to support you!

Jason Cox

@christianselig I'm so sorry to hear this. I just can't imagine how it feels to have your business ripped out from under you by a bunch of greedy corporate twats. :-(

Chris Wu :toucan:

@christianselig Heartbreaking and infuriating. After reading that I'm done with Reddit when Apollo goes dark. I love that you came with receipts.

You've been an inspiration to us as to what an amazing app developer can produce while still being a good (and funny) person. You will be fine but that doesn't mean that everything about this doesn't suck.

Joel LeBlanc

@christianselig Good for you! That was about to turn into an abusive relationship.

Onward and upward! 👊

Marshall Beyer :verified:

@christianselig 😢 This is so sad. Apollo is by far one of my favorite apps.

Chris Barlow

@christianselig Me and Nugget are sending our love ❤️😢❤️

MrNerdyJay

@christianselig Thank you for making such an amazing app. Today is a sad day

Joshua Lückers - Jacobsen

@christianselig thanks for one of the best apps for iOS! Such a sad day, Duck Reddit! ❤️

Jason Sadler

@christianselig Ugh, that sucks. Apollo sits on my first Home Screen, and has been such an inspiration to me as an iOS developer. So many great ideas and subtle touches.
Thank YOU for the awesome app.

Jordan Faustino

@christianselig Thank YOU! My Reddit usage will end with Apollo. As far as I’m concerned, Reddit is Apollo.

Dylan Frankcom

@christianselig so sorry to hear that, Christian. Thank you so much for the years we had with Apollo. It’s an inspiration!

grant :blobcatgoogly:

. @christianselig have you looked into making a Lemmy client similar to Apollo?

wakest ⁂

@grant @christianselig I really think keeping Apollo and replacing the backend with support for @LemmyDev would be amazing and a huge slap in the face to reddit, and I know a ton of people would jump on this ship because of how much they like Apollo over reddit

Tim Morris 🎆

@christianselig Thanks for everything. What an awful way such a great app ends. Good luck! 💙

Noah Kamara

@christianselig I guess I’ll stop using Reddit on June 30th.
Thanks for the great app, do you have any projects in the pipeline?

Heidi Helen Pilypas

@christianselig I’m so sorry it had to come to this. Despite the sadness of this situation, I’m glad you got well-deserved recognition at WWDC this week. It’s unfortunate that this time couldn’t be purely celebratory without the added stress. As you conclude this chapter, I’m wishing you peace and strength. ❤️

mustafagursel

@christianselig so sorry that it came down to that. 😔 I want to point out a different view where reddit’s statistics about api call per user a day. I think that number should be calculated different way to be fair. Let’s assume users are happy with your app and spend more time on it and eventually making more api calls a day. That number should be calculated as api call rate for active session time. I hope you will find a way with a new endeavor. Best wishes for you. 🙏

David Leitko 🗿 :ubuntu_logo:

@christianselig Thank you so much for everything you put into Apollo! Guess I’m done with Reddit as of June 30th.

Nathan :verified_OldBay:

@christianselig Thanks for the best Reddit client I have ever used, and all the care and features you built for it.

Marquis Kurt :xcode:

@christianselig Thanks so much for creating an enjoyable Reddit experience! Sucks that this happened to you.

Ris Adams

@christianselig thank you for your efforts in maintaining an app that has been so fundamentally part of my life for the past few years.

I wish you nothing but happiness, and am so very proud to have watched how you handled yourself over the past few weeks.

Jason Quinn

@christianselig Incredibly sad to see a fellow Nova Scotian’s app close down. Happy to have been here since closed beta. 🍻

DELETED

@Jbquinn @christianselig As a 37-year resident of NS-adjacent Tantramar — and, hey, lots of businesses in Amherst use “Tantramar” in their names, too — and as a Mackay with deep Pictou County roots, it saddens me, too. 😕

Robert George 𓇳𓃀𓁹𓏏𓇥𓆓𓀀

@christianselig I’m sorry to hear this. I’ve really enjoyed using Apollo over the years. I suppose I’ll have to continue my support through Pixel Pals now 🙂

Kelly Guimont

@christianselig I'm sorry for you that you had to deal with all of this. I can't wait to see what you do next though. 💚

DELETED

@christianselig So sad to hear that there is no way for Apollo to continue. It has been the most used app on my phone for several years. Looking forward to seeing what you’ll do next! ✨

Jens Schaller

@christianselig That's very sad to hear, but totally understandable. Without Apollo there is no Reddit for me. Thank you for all the hard work 🙏

tarasis

@christianselig ☹️😞 time for a Reddit 2.0 built of fed pub, open to all

wakest ⁂

@tarasis @christianselig we already have a few! Lemmy and Kbin and BrutalLinks!

Aldo Zenzo 🧢

@christianselig Wishing you peace, wisdom, and good fortune, Christian. Thank you for making one of the best apps ever made.

Paweł Grzybek

@christianselig This is so so so so sad! Thank you for your amazing work over the last few years Christian!

🖕 Reddit

John M. Bauer

@christianselig That sucks to see they wouldn't budge 😢

But on a happier note, your being so public about everything has led to me and many others discovering lemmy and the fediverse!

wakest ⁂

@mobiuscoffee you discovered the fediverse from this situation happening?

John M. Bauer

@liaizon yeah more or less! I had heard of mastodon and probably given up during the signup process.

The right mix of motivation and timing with this news made me want to give it a more honest try!

ex_06

@christianselig I started using Reddit thanks to Apollo, I guess I’ll stop and wait for an Apollo to show up in the fediverse :)

I hope you made enough to try something else new, good luck for everything!

No Fun Berg

@christianselig Sad to see it, but I understand and respect your decision.

I pretty much only use Reddit via Apollo, I will definitely be using it way less, if at all, after this.

Zacharyprx

@christianselig 8 years ago, you inspired me to get a degree in software development and learn how to make iOS apps. Thank you Christian. I am excited to see what you do next

Rick Silva

@christianselig sorry it came to this. I've tried using Reddit numerous times in the past and it never stuck. Apollo finally made it useable for me and it is easily one of the best apps on my iPhone.

Good luck and I'm looking forward to what you create next!

Tom Eppenberger Jr

@christianselig thank you for all the work. Apollo was terrific. ❤️

bubbajet 🥥🌴 VOTED

@christianselig Thank you for the work you did. You took what is an entirely unusable website and made it comprehensible and removed the friction involved in navigating the ridiculous interface.

I feel like one of “the olds” who think that Google is the internet - but to me Apollo literally *is* Reddit. The friction involved in the official website and app means it won’t be worth going back.

Great work! Good luck! 👍

chluebi

@christianselig@mastodon.social You've made a wonderful product and I enjoyed using it back when I was still on IOS. Best wishes

Bernie Hofley :CApride:

@christianselig I wasn't a big Reddit user, but when I did, it was always with Apollo. Superb app!

Rahul Rachuri

@christianselig sorry to hear this. Thank you for everything, Christian! Looking forward to what you do next ❤️

Micah Benn

@christianselig That’s so sad to hear. I hope you’re able to find another soulmate project! My school shutdown my project once, so I know a similar feeling 😔

Garrett Murray

@christianselig This is absolutely awful, Christian, I’m so sorry you had to deal with all this bullshit, and what a huge loss to the iOS ecosystem this is. Apollo is terrific work and your consistent quality is a marvel. Looking forward to watching you build more amazing stuff.

Steve Streza

@christianselig Thanks for the many years of updates, it was always one of the first apps to install on a new device. Terrible that it had to end like this for you.

Joe Fabisevich :verified:

@christianselig Awful. I’m sure you’ll receive a million well-deserved I’m sorry to hear that messages, but you really do deserve it for the amazing product and community you’ve built around it. Best of luck friend, we’re here to support you.

Miguel de Icaza

@christianselig I am very sorry Christian. Your app was lovely, beautiful and was a delight to use. I was a happy subscriber, and I am going to cheer you on whatever new paths you take. Hugs man.

Alex Stevenson-Price

@christianselig What an absolutely shitty situation. Thanks for the many years of an amazing app, and I’m excited to see what you do next! 💜

Stephen Brannen

@christianselig Apollo is consistently my most used app.

As much as this sucks for users I can’t imagine how much shutting down hurts you.

I do, however, look forward to what you do next.

Timothy Wynn

Just a reminder that everything posted on the internet, while having a lot of reach, is ultimately ephemeral, i.e., if servers goes down or they shut down service (Yahoo!Groups), all the user-generated data will no longer be there. This includes, of course, things such as email, chat messages, forum posts, etc. While I do have monthly email backups, it's not grabbing every email I have from every folder. I really should fix that, but ouch, so many communities have gone the way of the dodo...

Sam

@christianselig I am hoping this is a post that will mark a turning point. If not it will be remembered as a moment of supreme hubris. Either way you wrote one of the great apps. Kudos.

Steve

@christianselig thanks for all your hard work. I’ll be deleting my Reddit account once Apollo goes dark

otheorange_tag

@christianselig I'm too old to know exactly what is going on, just know it should be possible to continue on without reddit. I have a server client model that can have servers any language, and a thin antibrowser client with minimal dependencies, doesnt even need fonts. No idea if this helps. Also is there something in the fediverse you can use? Again no idea.

mb

@christianselig What a horrible situation. I’m so sorry to hear what you’ve been put through.

Thank you for all the incredible work over the years on such an amazing app. Best of luck!

(MOVED) Zack Apiratitham

@christianselig I’m really sorry it had to come to this 💔 Apollo is easily one of my all-time favorite apps, and I spent so much time on it (maybe even too much 😅).

The app also set such a high standard for what a great iOS app should be like, and I always strive towards that when I work on my own apps.

So thank you so much for everything, and I can’t wait to see what you do next! 💙

Michael Santaly

@christianselig I bought a year of Ultra the other day. I won’t be requesting a refund. Thank you for all the work!

Nic Hagan

@christianselig I'm so sorry! I loved the app and reccomended it to as many people as I could.

BrutalBeard

@christianselig thank you so much for your hard work over the years! It’s been a truly wonderful application to interact with!

fender324

@christianselig This sucks so much. Thank you for making such a wonderful app.

Eric Böhnisch-Volkmann

@christianselig We are really sorry and keep our fingers crossed for your next undertaking!

Son of a Sailor

@christianselig I'm so sorry. Thanks for the great work you shared with us over the years. Best of luck in all your future endeavors!

JLO64

@christianselig This news genuinely bums me out. Wishing you well in your future endeavors!

Vyvyan Basterd

@christianselig your app made Reddit worth using. Thanks for all your hard work.

Aaron :apple_inc: :isles:

@christianselig This is sad, frustrating you’re in this spot, and I’m angry that Reddit has forced you out of business. I truly hope Pixel Pals and other apps you can develop can help with things in some way.

Fuck reddit. Apollo was the only reason I have used it so much.

Trevor :aim_logo:

@christianselig I’m so sorry. I’ve followed along since before the beta. Thank you for the app, the developer insights along the way, and more recently the transparency about this whole mess.

Josh Ferrara :mastodon:

@christianselig man, I’m sorry you had to make this decision. You’ve done incredible work and built something special. I can’t wait to see what you’re involved with next.

Thanks for everything!

raminf

@christianselig

When Alien Blue went away, Apollo showed up and made those who cared about mobile apps and elegant design happy. Instant "Ultra" purchase.

It will be sad to see it go away this way, especially since there is nothing else to replace it.

Best of luck in your next adventures!

Brian

@christianselig So sorry man, this sucks. Loved Apollo while it lasted

JS_WordSmith

@christianselig such a great app. Sorry it’s come to this

June Bash

@christianselig I’m so sorry to hear that, and that this is happening. The app will be missed! I’m eager to see what comes next from you. Take care in the meantime, and know how many have appreciated the work you have done. ❤️

Gaston Rampersad

@christianselig Apollo was the one app that got me into using Reddit. Sad to see this happen to your app but conversely, looking forward to seeing what you build next.

Eric Schwarz :yikes:

@christianselig Sorry to hear. I really appreciated the attention to detail and thoughtful design of the app (not to mention all the icons!)

Looking forward to what’s next from you! ☺️

Andrew

@christianselig so sorry to hear this! This was truly the only way to use Reddit and you made/make an absolutely world class app. ❤️

Michał Kasprzyk

@christianselig sorry to hear that! Sad that another company is killing 3rd party apps that made the platform easier to use and bring so many new users.

sojin

@christianselig This bites. 💀 Thank you for the incredible years until now.

JavierVilanova

@christianselig I too hoped an equitable resolution could be reached. I’m proud to have been an OG lifetime Ultra customer. Thank you for the consistently excellent app. Best to you!

Nolando

@christianselig I just saw the post via Apollo, and I’m very sorry to hear this. I hope that you’ll continue to make cool and useful apps, and I’m quite happy to be able to follow you here in Mastodon!

Jay :verified_gay:

@christianselig thanks for making a stellar app! One of my first testflights also!

Jeremie Berduck :xcode:

@christianselig You stay an inspiration for all of us man!
Thanks for your hard work with Apollo and I guess we'll see something new from you as soon as you'll be over this sad story. Meanwhile, take care man!

ps: free hug > 🤗

Jared Smith

@christianselig Apollo was the only way I read Reddit. Thank you so much for your hard work.
