I’ve had a lot of questions about Reddit’s planned AMA today and “What if they…”, so I added a section to the bottom of my post to answer that and thought I’d share it here too.

reddit.com/r/apolloapp/comment

A section of my post titled “What if…” I've seen a lot of questions along the lines of: "What if Reddit gives you a deadline extension because of this post and posts by other developers?" and that's something I truly would have loved for them to have made an effort to communicate earlier. You can't give developers 30 days between when the pricing is announced and when they will start incurring charges, and *also* wait a week (25% of the time we're given) between replying to emails without so much as a "we hear you're concerned about the short timeline and looking into what we can do". In conjunction with your previous emails, it just appears like you've stopped any desire to communicate with developers, in a period where we have a serious, expensive deadline looming with not that much time to wind down our apps.

I’ve ran out of characters to transcribe the alt text, please see last section in linked thread.

@christianselig I’m waiting for this AMA so I can leave a comment about cancelling my premium

That Nonproductive Guy

@wonkothesane @christianselig canceled mine yesterday.
Saves me some $ and it frees up a space on my home screen, not to mention the ridiculous # of hours I spent in Apollo can now be used for more productive pursuits.

Michael Santaly

@vertana @nonproductive Yea, I say this but realistically I’m going to find new ways to waste the time. Mastodon is a good example

That Nonproductive Guy

@wonkothesane @vertana of course! But wasting time on Mastodon is "hanging with friends" - wasting time on Reddit is more like "Arguing with a screen" :)

osmanthus

@nonproductive @wonkothesane @vertana it always felt like arguing with angry ignorant neckbeards

That Nonproductive Guy

@osmanthus @wonkothesane @vertana You’re not wrong.
I’ve been on Reddit for nearly 13yrs. It started out really good and then, even in the most innocuous subreddits, you’d have people that just wanted to fight. At times it was impossible to have a conversation or get help because of the trolls.

Going to try out Lenny but feel like I get 90% of what I need from social media right here.

Vertana

@nonproductive don’t forget you can follow kbin, Lemmy, and other services found on fediverse.to. So I get best of both worlds - Twit type feed on home page and subreddits in my Mastodon lists.

That Nonproductive Guy

@vertana Oooo, that’s actually cool.
So would it be like having a particular subreddit in your “home” feed to on Reddit?

Vertana replied to That Nonproductive Guy

@nonproductive copying from another comment I made:

If you are using a Mastodon client what you can do is follow "subreddits" (communities) and then add them to a list and mute them on your home page. For example, making a list called "Video Games" and then adding the account "@gaming" to it will effectively create a feed of that gaming community to that list. So now when you click the "Video Game" list it brings you to that. You can add as many accounts as you want to these lists and basically create your own personal multireddits.

That Nonproductive Guy replied to Vertana

@vertana @gaming ok... this is brilliant. I have been using lists like I did on Twitter and never thought of using them to follow lemmy groups.

Thank you very much for this. Looks like I have some evening browsing to do today :)

Vertana

@wonkothesane I’ve been hooked ever since I figured out I can talk to and see Mastodon, Pixelfed, and Lemmy/kbin content all from the same place. And it all looks native.

Vertana

@Colmear

Looks like you might be on a Mastodon instance. Trying looking at user @dansup. You should be able to follow the account like normal even though it’s a completely different service. Or if you want to follow a “subreddit” you do the same thing but with the whole sub. Try following @gaming for example.

Curious Badger

@christianselig once again, I’m so sorry it came to this. It’s such a shame.

I can’t wait to see how heavily moderated the AMA will be in 45 minutes.

Dominik

@curiousbadger @christianselig When is it supposed to start? 30 Minutes from now? I’m morbidly curious.

Thessnake03

@curiousbadger @christianselig still ain't live. Just another sign of how they run their business

Moby Duck

@christianselig really sad to see Apollo go, it’s an example of excellence on the iOS platform while the official offering is an example of user-hostile, poorly accessible corporate greed. Thanks for everything and good luck with whatever you do going forward! Also obligatory #fuckreddit, see all of you over at Lemmy!

Peter Curd

@christianselig I’m going to miss using Apollo. Not sure I’m going to miss Reddit as much. I’ve already told some of the subs I moderate that I’m leaving the platform. I’ve decided it’s Apollo or nothing! I look forward to your next app (I love Amplosion and Achoo)

Ville :apple_retro_logo:

@christianselig I feel so sorry for you, Apollo is a great app. I hope you release a new app that a lot for people are going to use daily!

Joshua

No one should take any bait offered by Reddit. Any compromises they may offer will undoubtedly be erased within a few months and we'll be back to the current situation.

Ben Weaver

@christianselig I’m going to really miss using Apollo. It’s been by far my most used iOS app since you released it. I consider it to be the benchmark for what an iOS app should be. I don’t use Reddit outside of Apollo at all, so after over 10 years of use I’ll be redacting all my content and deleting all my accounts in solidarity with Apollo. I’ve used your app since your first thread launching on /r/apple. Thanks for everything.

thatvirtualboy

@christianselig Out of curiousity Christian, are you going to still use Reddit yourself? Or has that bridge been burned?

gh0sti :pika:

@christianselig 8 years you helped their site grow and this is the thanks they give you. What a slap in the face.

Vertana

@christianselig To those that are deleting your accounts you can use this to fully wipe it before June 30th API change: github.com/j0be/PowerDeleteSui

Natha

@christianselig I mean, if Reddit/Spez comes forward with “Hey guys, we apologise, come back.”, the best move will clearly be the middle finger. Reddit don’t deserve Apollo, its dev and its users.

Either way, the upcoming AMA might be some kind of damage control. But I would really be surprised that anything productive comes out of it.

You did the right thing Christian. It’s time to move on. Wherever you go next, we will follow you.

NoToRedditAPIFees

@christianselig sad stuff. Looking forward to follow you here on Mastadon after deleting Reddit, man. You’ve really made Reddit enjoyable, more than the default app or website could ever do.

harleyofallthings

@christianselig Very curious about how much effort it would take to make "Appolo for Lemmy."

I understand they're two different platforms so it would be a lot but I think most of the effort is on the backend as it seems like lemmy is functionally similar. I'm not an ios developer myself so I could be completely wrong but I'm just curious.

However lemmy is a lot less popular so it may not be worth it.

Dennis

@Dogmaster6 @christianselig It depends on how similar the api is. If it is close enough, it shouldn’t be that hard to be able to write an adapter which translates the Reddit API calls to Lemmy API calls. That would allow basically every Reddit app to simply use this adapter and change to Lemmy. The more the APIs differ, the harder it would be

Tane Piper ⁂

@christianselig @tchambers It's truly the end of the "Media Platform" era with this and Twitter - everyone who built their tools on someone else's platform will start to pull away, and the audiences will die away.

I've have people comment that federation won't work, but all the really popular reddits have to do is agree a path to create their own communities - there are plenty with over 100k users

Bee • New Move!

@christianselig What would be the best outcome from this AMA, if at all?

bdawg923

@christianselig I'm absolutely devastated. I hope reddit comes around, but if not then thank you for giving us the best Reddit app (and my most used app on my phone). Really sucks how this is ending.

Laowai

@christianselig I’ve just deleted all of my posts from my 8 years on Reddit. I hope others will be inspired to do the same. My account t will be deleted on June 30th.

Philipp

@christianselig I’m genuinely destroyed by the fact that my most used app will vanish this month. I know it’s nothing compared to your loss but man will I miss this experience. Fan since day 1.

doncristian 🇨🇷

@christianselig sad to see all of this develop the way it did. Just deleted my reddit account, thanks for such an amazing and well done app 🫂❤️

Will Clark

@christianselig Oh man, he's real real made you make a living from Apollo. Insanely whiney sounding.

Michael Davies

@christianselig I’m watching a chromium extension delete my 12 years of comment and post history. After I got past the activity from 8 years ago it didn’t have much work to do. Thanks for making such a brilliant app and I look forward to seeing what, if anything, you’ll share in the future.

Stuart McHattie

@christianselig they keep going on about being threatened but they hold all the cards. You can’t be threatened when you have all the power. Such ridiculous behaviour for a business as large as theirs.

Down10

@christianselig
It didn't have to be this way. Reddit could have made positive gestures with developers or even just rolled back their insane price increases. But no, Reddit wants to destroy all good will with their 3rd-party developers and their mods and their users.

Fuck them. I hope Reddit goes down in flames, like Digg did before it.

Kit

@christianselig Anyone still on Twitter? Kara Swisher and Scott Galloway were pretty insensitive about this on their Pivot podcast. I would love for someone to bring the facts to their attention.

Joelyd

@christianselig what app is that in the dynamic island (not the pixel pal)?

Henkjan Schrijver

@christianselig Love the app and this sucks. Maybe build one for something like Post.news instead? 🤷‍♂️

HeadPlug

@christianselig It might have already been asked, but have you considered pointing Apollo to something like Lemmy?

Gumpy2

@christianselig it’s seriously disgusting how he’s trying to paint you as an evil leech on their precious profits; you’re literally just trying to make improvements to help users

@christianselig thanks for adding the tip jar. I tipped a bit, then deleted my Reddit account and then Apollo. God bless on whatever you build next.

@christianselig create your own Reddit, Christian. People would sign up.
