In Popular Latin it got an extra meaning: "yes", born out of the sense "like that", i.e. "like you said". French 'oui' has a completely different origin. It comes from Old French 'oïl', a univerbation of 'o il', literally "yes, it (is/does/has etc.)". 'O' stemmed from Latin 'hoc' (this), which became 'òc' (yes) in Occitan, whose name was derived from this very word. @yvanspijk is there a classic latin word for just “yes” anyway? Or would they use a longer confirmative sentence construction? @yvanspijk Thanks for this, very interesting as always! Couldn't French "ainsi" be some kind of derivative from Spanish "así"? @sertaptap @robotistry I don’t know how anyone could deal with all those ads. I literally can’t remember the last time I saw an ad. You guys need better content blockers. @sertaptap a friend bought an urn for her mom’s ashes. She has been getting ads for funerary urns ever since. @exocomics when I first got my old cat, he has no concept that love bites are meant to be gentle, so his love is always harder to deal with than when he's being an intentional little shit. I never knew if I should bite back and get a mouthful of fur or something. Turned out immediately walk off and ignore him worked really well @exocomics #Alt4You: A four panel cartoon of a wide-eyed cat and its owner's arm. Panel 1: "I bite." the cat's teeth are visible as it bites the hand, and its claws are out grabbing the hand and arm. Panel 2: "I sorry." The cat's tongue is out, licking the hand, and the claws are retracted. Panel 3: "I bite again". Similar to 1 but the cat looks angrier. Panel 4: In brackets, "Kicking interlude". Same as 3, but with added back feet furiously kicking against the owner's arm. By secretly paying some creators to post on Threads, Meta is undermining trust in everyone's motivations. Suddenly everyone is assumed to be "engagement farming": https://werd.io/2024/threads-is-trading-trust-for-growth They joked: „If libraries were invented today they would be illegal.“ Well. It’s not a joke anymore: https://www.wired.com/story/internet-archive-loses-hachette-books-case-appeal/

@malteengeler @ireneista I don't think it was a joke to any of us aware of what copyright fascists stand for.
@malteengeler Others have said this, but the Internet Archive's appeals-court loss to Big Publishing is a disaster for everyone but the cartel of companies and a tiny number of A list authors. The publishers will tolerate libraries only as long as they can control everything about how books can be loaned. If public libraries were being invented today, the cartel would make their core functions illegal. https://www.theverge.com/2024/9/4/24235958/internet-archive-loses-appeal-ebook-lending

@dangillmor It wasn't just A-list authors who were spitting mad at IA over this. I've seen non-A-list authors complaining bitterly that IA was acting more like The Pirate Bay than a library during the first years of the plague. (Personally, I think that IA was overly influenced by the "move fast and break things" ethos of the early internet without realizing that that tactic no longer works unless you're already a F500 company.) @dangillmor That's why Anna's Archive is so important. Don't know what it is? Look it up and help save the world of books. We talk a lot about the federation of Threads but it is incredible what @Flipboard has managed to do. A #fediverse app is literally an Editor’s Choice in the App Store because of the work they are doing. Did you expect to see a fedi client sitting between Disney+ and Audible two years ago?

For some reason the #Leprous Melodies of Atonement LP is 45 RPM instead of 33 RPM, first time I've had to switch the band on the record player.

@Sheril Google smart speakers also do this. I have twice had Google services present me with information for things that were talked about in front of the speaker but never searched for, in one case by someone else without my phone present. Google denied it, even after I sicced the UK Information Commissioner on them, but it's the only possible explanation.
