@exocomics when I first got my old cat, he has no concept that love bites are meant to be gentle, so his love is always harder to deal with than when he's being an intentional little shit. I never knew if I should bite back and get a mouthful of fur or something.

In some countries libraries pay a compensation fee to publishers and/or writers, between 2 and 10 cents for every time a book is loaned out. This makes a library legal business.
Did Internet Archive offer to pay such a fee? I think I overlooked that in the news article.

@dangillmor It wasn't just A-list authors who were spitting mad at IA over this. I've seen non-A-list authors complaining bitterly that IA was acting more like The Pirate Bay than a library during the first years of the plague.

(Personally, I think that IA was overly influenced by the "move fast and break things" ethos of the early internet without realizing that that tactic no longer works unless you're already a F500 company.)

@Sheril should see what their developers do as jokes. It is as intense as are the lack of procedure to address it when you report to Apple someone was already generating bots off the data as of 2020.

@Sheril Google smart speakers also do this. I have twice had Google services present me with information for things that were talked about in front of the speaker but never searched for, in one case by someone else without my phone present. Google denied it, even after I sicced the UK Information Commissioner on them, but it's the only possible explanation.
