Please do not add genAI images to punch up your writing. You might think that it adds a nice little bit of visual pizazz to your content-marketing piece, but what you're actually doing is *making it look like content marketing* rather than a useful resource. To the extent that content marketing is an effective tactic, it is because you build trust with the customer by providing them valuable information. A genAI turd plopped on top of your writing is a signal that it will be worthless slop.

@glyph My favorite writer just did that. I was shocked, and for once did not bring the link here.

Mondanzo

@glyph do though: Add procedural art and pictures! Those funny generated artworks deserve the title genart much more than the heartless mass trash AI Art.

Luna chan

@glyph Even the most scrubbed human art had more soul than AI art.

I wonder if linux audiophiles are a thing.

"plain ALSA sounds warmer than pipewire"

"linux kernel compiled with ALSR makes for a more chaotic high end"

"ext2 sounds better than ext4"

@vidister the conversations below remind me that someone did make an ffmpegFS module. github.com/nschlia/ffmpegfs read-only FS in tandem with ffmoeg to dynamically transcode media.

@vidister@chaos.social monsieur @skobkin@lor.sh (with a stress on the "i") might enjoy this tread as much as I did

Fuji Superia X-tra 400 is very pretty one stop overexposed. Much better than at box speed, to my eye. Too bad it's discontinued, I have just a few rolls left 😔 At least it's a more than zero.

Elengale

@Gargron My personal experience is that the "cheap" consumer film stocks (Colorplus, Gold, Max, X-TRA, Superia, etc.) look really lovely exposed a stop over, and a lot less so a stop under.

And given how many of these films were loaded into cheap/disposable lenses with slow lenses, it's little wonder that they've developed a reputation for being muddy and low-quality.

They just need a chance and a bit more light to shine!

NoCoNurse

@Gargron Actually digging out an old camera today for kicks- have 10 year expired film. I’m clueless about it all.
From what I’ve gathered, I should tell the camera that the iso is lower than what’s on the box ? So if that is says 400 I should tell the camera it’s 200? Is that how you go about making sure it’s over-exposed? Thanks!

@Gargron I found Fujifilm had the best blues. Landscapes always popped.

Blog post for Mastodon 4.3 is prepared. There's going to be another beta and then a release candidate next week but then we're good to go. I'm looking forward to concluding that work stream.

@Gargron PLEASE, as an admin, let us set post-length limits in the admin settings. Every single update overwrites the manual override and the 500-char limit is arbitrary.

@Gargron I’m just looking for some good games. There’s some great story lines no matter who wins.

@Gargron haven't played DotA2 since at least 2019 or so... every year it gets harder and harder to follow even the basics at TI. They just keep adding new stuff. Does the map really need 4 interactive building types and two Rochan pits?

(+ costumes and spell effects that make even the old Heroes and spells so much harder to read)

Slowly getting better at using #darktable to edit my scans. I'm pretty much learing as I go by playing around with things. I think I previously posted this photo somewhere, but I went back to edit again. This was Ilford Ortho Plus 80 in the Canon Rebel 2000. Plastic "nifty fifty" 50/1.8 lens. #believeinfilm #filmphotography

A pastor is trying to get a bunch of Flat Earthers to come to Antarctica to see the 24-hour sun to prove the Earth isn't flat.

The Ceremonial South Pole, with a striped pole with a sphere at the top as the marker, surrounded by the flags of the countries that signed the Antarctic Treaty, planted in the snow. The Sun is visible just above the the horizon, behind the monument, in a clear sky. It looks very calm and majestic.

We are excited to launch a new project that will help small and medium-sized fediverse servers and their users have better access to search and discovery through the use of pluggable Fediverse Discovery Providers, supported by a grant from @EC_NGI. See our new dedicated website for details:

Are you considering whether licences could be added / tagged to content to make it clear content can be used? - Is that relevant?

@MastodonEngineering @EC_NGI so cool! And will the moderation tools get some work too, to help people manage their communities?

I've got good news for those who want to use our new author bylines feature. It won't be necessary to e-mail us to request your website to be manually approved any longer. If you navigate to Edit Profile → Verification on the web, you'll find a new section called Author Attribution where you can control which websites can credit you in link previews.

@Gargron so, I tried adding this metadata to my website when I first heard about it, and it didn't work, but I didn't realize that I needed approval. I just added my blog to that list and saved my profile and I still don't see it. How do I debug this?

Andrea Grandi 🦕

@Gargron hi, I added my website to the list (and clicked on Save button) but if I visit my profile and click on toots where I've linked something from my blog I don't see anything 🤔

Printed and framed one of my recent photos. I honestly miscalculated the size of the passepartout a bit, it would probably look better without the inner margin. I’m still just kind of trying it on. Wish this was a darkroom print, but it’s not. Don’t have access to one at the moment.

The Right Irreverend

@Gargron As my eyes move to look at the picture, the framing makes me feel like I am entering in to a room. I really like this.

@kyleve The ticket I'm working on now basically says to "form the concept for a plan", not to do the actual work.

And I've got one. But I don't know for sure that it'll do what's needed. So I'm writing the code anyway to try it out (it's a performance thing, you almost never do know until you try it).

"Dear Eugen,

We, as part of the Mastodon community, are writing to address a concerning issue that has recently impacted one of our valued members. Unfortunately, a user has been scraping and sharing our posts without permission on their own channel, compromising our privacy. When one of our friends brought this to our attention, their account was unfairly suspended due to a miscommunication stemming from a typographical error (the similarity between "kass" and a sensitive term).

Pouya

@Gargron
We believe it is essential to address this matter and work together to maintain a respectful and inclusive community."

I bet shutting down all the AI data centers would probably make being carbon neutral a lot easier.

@paul The only problem with thinking like this is you also shut down all the people trying to make a net positive impact on society. Too bad really, but I guess you'll reap what you sow.
