I bet shutting down all the AI data centers would probably make being carbon neutral a lot easier.

@paul In the interview with Gruber at WWDC, they said the Apple Intelligence data centres were already carbon neutral.

Vítor

@HarbingerOfSalem They have also mentioned that in this keynote, very publicly. If you don’t believe them and the 2030 initiative, that’s your prerogative.

I’m looking forward to your investigative journalism piece that proves it’s all a farce. Until then, I’m uninterested in shallow dismissals.

@HarbingerOfSalem

Yeah! When have multinational conglomerates EVER lied or even so much as exaggerated their business's impact on the environment or fudged the numbers in their favor? And especially Apple!

You have to be stupid not to take their word for it!

What a dunce ammiright?

Vítor

@carsaredumb That’s not what I said *at all*. Please don’t straw man.

Vítor

@RileyNorman Well, I was going to thank @HarbingerOfSalem for the link which sent me on a larger search to correct my thinking, but they reactively blocked me (which is mighty ironic, considering their pinned posts).

You as well could do with not being so reactive and understanding people are allowed to change their mind.

Alas, I am now painfully aware that reasoned discussion on this platform is too much to ask for.

Vítor

@RileyNorman I’m looking forward to your block, which apparently is the only way people know how to communicate around here.

Riley Norman

@vitor Perhaps if you relied less on your preconceived notions you find more joy in surprises

Riley Norman

@vitor @HarbingerOfSalem
This may come as a surprise but there are a lot of engineers on this platform who know that any datacenter claiming to be carbon neutral is laughably false. Datacenters are easily the least carbon neutral structures in existence and datacenter providers are only building more for the likes of Apple.

The "shallow dismissals" you claim ruin this environment was a response to someone claiming that the earth is flat (essentially). Forgive us harried techs our frustrations

@vitor @paul are they accomplishing this via the purchase of offsets?

Philip Mallegol-Hansen

@paul But that’s not on Apple’s balance sheet, they just pay AWS for a service. Whatever terrible externalities that has surely isn’t a problem!

@philip @paul it’s not AWS since it run in their M Ship …..

Mieszko Ślusarczyk

@paul Or at least not doing crap like crappy images generator.

Matt Fern

@paul If I had to guess, they'll just claim that those datacenters aren't theirs — they're being operated by OpenAI and other companies, and therefore aren't *their* responsibility.

Jamie McCarthy

@paul @MattF_NorCal 100% of Apple’s data centers have run on 100% renewable electricity since 2014, including all their new AI data centers. But yes you are correct, Apple devices do interact with other companies’ computers and some people think that’s bad

Matt Fern

@jamiemccarthy @paul *Does* Apple count AI data centers (theirs or third-party operated) in that figure, though? I’d be more confident in that figure if it specifically accounted for anticipated or actual figures from data centers used for Apple Intelligence (since AI servers consume significantly higher amounts of power than 'typical' cloud servers).

Jamie McCarthy

@MattF_NorCal @paul Twenty minutes ago in their live event they said they do

DELETED

@jamiemccarthy @paul @MattF_NorCal and if apple where to limit that the same people will be angry because apple limit connectivity (they never are happy yet they do nothing XD)

Michael Busch

@paul @ai6yr Likewise for shutting down all cryptocurrency scams.

But that would be redundant.

joshhunt

@paul not really tbh. data centers are one of the easiest things to make carbon neutral - it’s just renewable energy generation at a small number of locations.

Apple’s been carbon neutral for their corporate emissions for years now, way before this 2030 target was announced.

_noelamac_

@joshhunt @paul Data centers hunger for energy and water for cooling, even more for powering a growing AI capacity demand.

Of course RE can be used to power them (although water demand isn’t solved) -if built fast enough, otherwise fossil power must be used- but this increases the overall RE demand, more pressure on grids & makes decarbonisation more difficult & slow.

Sustainability is a big, often ignored, issue of the tech industry.

Johannes Link

@joshhunt @paul As long as there’s no worldwide abundance of RE every kWh used for GenAI cannot be used for other stuff. Therefore „carbon neutral“ for just some data center means nothing.

Antti Rasinen

@paul Au contraire! In Finland we run them with low-carbon electricity and then capture the waste heat for district heating. It’s sort of an electric kettle but made from CPUs 😁

OddOpinions5

@paul

no it wouldn't
AI is a few % of global carbon, so not a "lot" easier

Colman Reilly

@paul not as easy as stopping agriculture and stopping using fossil fuels would be.

@Colman @paul

The latter? Smart

Stopping.....agriculture.

Ooooookie dokie

Not "less cows"
Not "electric tractor"
But stopping....agriculture

RiaResists

@paul throw in bit coin mining centers and it would be even easier!

Toasterson

@paul I think we would already be Carbon neutral

Anke

@paul also crypto miners!
and while we're at it, the tracking of people's individual behaviour to optimizr ad targeting!

@paul Let’s keep some capacity for designing new materials and new drugs. I don’t need LLMs or image diffusion models in my life so far

Tim

@paul The only problem with thinking like this is you also shut down all the people trying to make a net positive impact on society. Too bad really, but I guess you'll reap what you sow.

Григорий Клюшников

Obviously the hype is much more important than the environment.
