I bet shutting down all the AI data centers would probably make being carbon neutral a lot easier.

@HarbingerOfSalem They have also mentioned that in this keynote, very publicly. If you don’t believe them and the 2030 initiative, that’s your prerogative. I’m looking forward to your investigative journalism piece that proves it’s all a farce. Until then, I’m uninterested in shallow dismissals. Yeah! When have multinational conglomerates EVER lied or even so much as exaggerated their business's impact on the environment or fudged the numbers in their favor? And especially Apple! You have to be stupid not to take their word for it! What a dunce ammiright? @RileyNorman Well, I was going to thank @HarbingerOfSalem for the link which sent me on a larger search to correct my thinking, but they reactively blocked me (which is mighty ironic, considering their pinned posts). You as well could do with not being so reactive and understanding people are allowed to change their mind. https://hachyderm.io/@vitor/113109172698122238 Alas, I am now painfully aware that reasoned discussion on this platform is too much to ask for. @RileyNorman I’m looking forward to your block, which apparently is the only way people know how to communicate around here. @vitor Perhaps if you relied less on your preconceived notions you find more joy in surprises @paul But that’s not on Apple’s balance sheet, they just pay AWS for a service. Whatever terrible externalities that has surely isn’t a problem! /s @paul @MattF_NorCal 100% of Apple’s data centers have run on 100% renewable electricity since 2014, including all their new AI data centers. But yes you are correct, Apple devices do interact with other companies’ computers and some people think that’s bad @jamiemccarthy @paul *Does* Apple count AI data centers (theirs or third-party operated) in that figure, though? I’d be more confident in that figure if it specifically accounted for anticipated or actual figures from data centers used for Apple Intelligence (since AI servers consume significantly higher amounts of power than 'typical' cloud servers). @jamiemccarthy @paul @MattF_NorCal and if apple where to limit that the same people will be angry because apple limit connectivity (they never are happy yet they do nothing XD) @paul Au contraire! In Finland we run them with low-carbon electricity and then capture the waste heat for district heating. It’s sort of an electric kettle but made from CPUs 😁 The latter? Smart Stopping.....agriculture. Ooooookie dokie Not "less cows" #civilizationisnotanoriginalsin Bye @paul Citibank is who you should protest; the biggest investors of gas and oil extraction is Citibank. (Afask) @paul If you did that, where would we get the grift and hype our economy runs on? https://www.theverge.com/2024/4/1/24118112/deepmind-co-founder-says-ai-hype-has-attracted-grifters @paul Let’s keep some capacity for designing new materials and new drugs. I don’t need LLMs or image diffusion models in my life so far |
@paul In the interview with Gruber at WWDC, they said the Apple Intelligence data centres were already carbon neutral.
