Total users != Active users

Kbin has more active users than Lemmy!

Anyone can inflate user counts, but active users are a better signal to determine growth 😉 #fediDB #threadiverse

@dansup IMHO, kbin’s interface is a little more intuitive.

DELETED

@dansup Problem is that Kbin is a PAIN to use. Lemmy is FAR better in function and appearance.

I made a Kbin account but quickly ran into issues trying to create a new community and the only way to "fix" it was to delete the account... Not ideal.

vuñuelo

@dansup Hasn't Ernest said Kbin doesn't really keep track of active users? I don't think they are equivalent metrics either.

✨ Updated FediDB Stats

The Threadiverse page now includes Active Users, and a note about lemmy spambot signups.

In addition, the Top 20 Fastest growing #threadiverse instances are now sorted by active users to give a more accurate overview!

I'm resurrecting my old FediDB developer tools to do some testing in Pixelfed, will be open sourcing the redesigned testing service soon!

This will make ActivityPub development much easier, and being able to test against other implementations without having to setup test instances is a game changer.

@dansup I agree. Working on a new project with ActivityPub. Can't wait to play with your tool!

@dansup pixelfed for vision pro real???!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!!?!??!?!??!?

dansup

At this rate, Lemmy will have more users than Mastodon by the end of the month.

The majority of this growth comes from instances with thousands of users and 1 post, suggesting that the growth is largely spambot driven.

dansup

I am aware of a huge surge in bot signups on Lemmy, and will give Lemmy instances 1 week to resolve this (and delete the accounts) before they are removed from FediDB.

@dansup I like the attitude.
«Have your spam problem solved by the time I come back from vacation, or I'll vacate you»

dansup

In you I'm lost

I won't turn around when the penny drops
I won't stop now
Won't slack off
Or all this love
Will be in vain

Apps, Groups, Live, Stories

Dare I say this will be the summer of @pixelfed?

Years worth of development and progress have lead to this special moment, it's finally happening! 😁

@dansup @pixelfed That is really wonderful. I'm glad all your hard work is paying off.

I have recently started using #pixelfed and it's an incredibly well-working, nice looking and intuitive platform. I really love it. Thanks so much for developing it :blobcatheart:

@dansup @pixelfed Hi Dan. I'm having trouble with importing from Instagram - is there a way to "select all" for import? I'm only seeing the option to click individually on each image I want to import, which would take a LONG time. Thank you -

dansup

I'm not kidding, @pixelfed has silently shipped Live streaming support over a year ago.

I don't think it's ready for prime time yet, that's why I haven't advertised it that much.

I'm working to ship this within the next month 🚀

I can't wait to go Live from @pixelfed with someone else, and for my followers to get a push notification that I went live, and once they click on it, the @pixelfed app opens to my Live stream where I answer questions in real time from users on the Live stream chat!

The code for this exists btw*, it's just a matter of polishing and preparing!

Mr. Funk E. Dude

@dansup @pixelfed Will there be a stream key to use or just allowed in the native app for now?

Shadow, First of His Name

@dansup @pixelfed Is there some kind of enforcement for bad actors who run their own instance and pop a Live publicly doing terrible things like previous events?

dansup

The @pixelfed app is really 3 apps combined together

- Social (the main app)
- Admin (admin dashboard)
- Camera/Live (real-time broadcasting, camera with AR filters)

Camera/Live is a big part of the app, and I'm currently testing AR filters, stickers and much more. The Story camera introduces video recording support which is huge!

Admin dashboard allows you to manage many aspects, including toggling federation and registration.

Super pumped to ship the Camera + Admin updates! #pixelfed

@pixelfed Messaging and Channels will make it like 4 apps.

If you've used Messenger before, you'll like what we're cooking up 😉

Andrea Grandi 🦕

@dansup @pixelfed any chance you are going to start at least coding the mobile app in the open? (which means you don't have to actively manage and accept external contribution if you don't want or have time to, but of course it would be even better if you could)

Thanks

PhilipKing

@dansup @pixelfed I’m just really keen to see the app out of beta. From a users point of view every time it gets close it looks like it’s delayed for something new. ☹️

dansup

I couldn't find a react native chart/graph library I liked, so I made my own for the @pixelfed app!

I wanted to keep it clean and simple, and I think this is it.

Wdyt?

@dansup @pixelfed I like it. I think the cases where someone would want to use it are somewhat limited BUT I can also think of a number of cases that it'd fit really well. It'd be nice to have this as a generic library i could reach for. ;)

dansup

It's easy to be an asshole maintainer.

Being able to put ego aside, handle constructive criticism and acknowledge your mistakes isn't so easy.

When I got my first webdev negative criticism about a poor design, it wrecked me. It inspired me to be better, and now I'm much more proud of my work.

It also taught me to be kinder and more receptive to criticism, and now I live for your feedback.

Pixelfed is powered by people, people like you, I just write the code

❤️

FediThing

@dansup

It is great that you are keeping the conversation going.

Even if we disagree, being able to talk directly to the lead maintainer and the maintainer replying directly is brilliant and in the spirit of the Fediverse :)

dansup

@edendestroyer It's okay, your feedback made me rethink a few things and I worked to fix it and hoped that you'd re-follow me after you migrated as a sign that you reconsidered the situation and I was able to showcase the values that I've long held in a way you'd appreciate and that you wouldn't think I would sell out or work against the community I worked so hard to build.

I've appreciated your support as a Pixelfed user, and hope you stick with us and we can move past this!

dansup

I implemented groups in @pixelfed back in 2021, but never shipped it

It lead to Mastodon and other projects to start working on groups too

The main reason I've been holding off is because I want to get this right and provide a FB like groups experience

I'm no longer putting this off, and @pixelfed Groups will set a high bar in terms of group administration, moderation and portability.

It's not who did it first, it's who did it right 😎

@dansup @pixelfed

Cool, though facebook-groups was always pretty crappy wasn't it? I'm sure you can find better ways to index and order posts than whatever mad algorithm they used.

acb

@dansup @pixelfed Awesome!

You may also want to look at the Flickr group experience; IMHO, it works nicely for themed photography, and has useful affordances such as configurable per-user throttling

@dansup
I am so pumped for groups! Imo they'll make it so much easier for new people to find interesting content and people to follow. They'll also make the #Fediverse stickier so that people are more likely to stay after each wave as they're more connected to the communities that matter to them.

The interface and implementation have to be right though, which is why I'm excited this is coming from you who have a good handle on these things.

Just look after yourself along the way! ❤️

Federated Groups are quite challenging to get right.

I'm discussing our impl with @trwnh and there are several aspects and side effects that no other implementation has approached, including:

- Private groups
- Group roles
- Group moderation
- Group fallback delivery
- Group migration
- Group mod logs
- Group admin vs Instance admin ownership

Everyone wants groups, which is understandable.

Nobody wants admins to be able to takeover groups, like Reddit did.

@pixelfed will get Groups right 😉

@dansup @trwnh Getting #Pinetta's version of groups (boards) working right will be a laugh and a half. Will be watching closely to see how it goes for you!

@dansup Thanks for all your hard work Dan. The Pixelfed app is coming along so nicely and I’m really grateful to have a safe space to share my photos and videos. You do great work 🙌

dansup

This person has been harassing me and multiple other ActivityPub developers for years because he was rejected from NLnet several times.

He even tried to complain to NLnet about me and get my grant cancelled.

- I don't lie or make bad jokes about other implementors, quite the opposite

- I haven't lied about meta, ask them if they met with me

- Attend meetings with you?

I have screenshots too.

Edit: removed fedi.camp mentions as I learned he does not run that, sorry about that

dansup

There are several incidents where he attacked the OP or would reply to posts with obscene photos.

I wouldn't recommend anything he is associated with, he is unhinged lmao

dansup

The past few days have been tough, but I’m doing better now.

Will be going camping this weekend, a much needed vacation!

I’m working on improving administration tools in the Pixelfed app so I can manage my instances while camping, and having fun building a mobile app dashboard!

Thanks for all the kind words, those few bad apples I will ignore ❤️

@dansup Have a great time and hope it is a perfect window to unplug and so glad you are sticking around. Ignoring the few bad apples sounds super-wise.

@dansup Have a great camping trip! Everyone needs and deserves a break from time to time.

dansup

Pixelfed does not display text-only posts in timelines, regardless of who we block, P92 posts won't be seen in Pixelfed feeds.

Furthermore, instead of an outright ban, pixelfed.social/art will silence P92, allowing users to opt to follow P92 accounts, or use a domain block to make that choice themselves.

I hope this clears up any confusion.

@dansup
I don’t see how you can look at what #Meta are doing right now:
1. Billions of € in GDPR fines
2. Fuelling hate speech promotion of that content
3. Facilitating election fraud
4. Cambridge Analytica

To name just a few items, and think it’s a good idea to platform them. Or to collaborate with them, in any way.
They have proven themselves as bad faith actors time and again.

They’re not deserving of any more “chances”.

@dansup this is genius, keeping power on people. Another time you playing the an adult-role in a playground 🤝🏼

I was contacted by someone who suggested using the lemmy-explorer dataset for lemmy instances, so I added them.

Lemmy is now at 289k users!

@dansup can you recommend a good instance to sign up to, please?
